New winners

Blue Point – Dazzling Star (2 f ex Dancing Sands by Dubawi) provided Darley’s Blue Point (Shamardal) with a 15th individual winner from 46 starters when she took out a maiden over six furlongs at Newmarket. A homebred for Godolphin, Dazzling Star is the fourth foal out of the Listed-winning Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare Dancing Sands. Blue Point, who stood the northern hemisphere season for a fee of €35,000 (approx. AU$57,305), will stand the upcoming southern hemisphere breeding season at Northwood Park in Victoria for an unchanged fee of AU$44,000 (inc GST).

 

Encryption – The Kelly Schweida-trained Fleeting Chance (2 c ex Fleet Riane by Barely A Moment) provided Eureka Stud’s first-season sire Encryption (Lonhro) with a fifth individual winner from 23 starters when making a successful debut at Ipswich. Purchased for $100,000 by his trainer at Book 2 of last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Fleeting Chance is the fourth winner from five foals to come out of the winning Barely A Moment (Gilded Time) mare Fleet Riane. Encryption will stand the 2023 season at Eureka Stud at a fee of $13,200 (inc GST).

 

Harry Angel – Darley shuttler Harry Angel (Dark Angel) earned an eighth individual southern hemisphere-bred winner when Highborn Harry (2 g ex Faith In My by Savabeel) won a two-year-old maiden handicap over 1200 metres at Kembla Grange. Highborn Harry was previously sold as a weanling when fetching $75,000 to the bid of Golden River Investments from the Redbank North draft at the 2021 Inglis sale, while JCS Thoroughbreds went to $20,000 to secure the son of Harry Angel at the 2022 Inglis Classic sale. Highborn Harry is the fourth named foal out of the three-time winner Faith In My, herself a daughter of the Group 3-placed mare With My (Covetous). Harry Angel, who has had 19 starters in Australia, is set to stand the upcoming southern hemisphere breeding season at Darley Kelvinside for a fee of $33,000 (including GST).

 

Justify – Naval Academy (2 g ex Kinetic Design by Master Of Design) became the seventh individual southern hemisphere winner from 17 starters for Coolmore’s first-season shuttler Justify (Scat Daddy) when running out an easy five-length victor of a Warracknabeal maiden on debut. A homebred for Robert and Barbara McLure’s Morning Rise in Victoria, Naval Academy is out of the stakes-placed mare Kinetic Design (Master Of Design), herself a granddaughter of Group 1 winner Kapchat (Centaine). Justify, who looks set to be crowned Champion First Season Sire at the end of this season, is returning to Jerry Plains for the 2023 southern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of $77,000 (inc GST).

 

Real Steel – Former Arrowfield Stud shuttler Real Steel (Deep Impact) sired his third individual southern hemisphere-bred winner when Valiant Khan (2 g ex Western Cape by Snitzel) scored a commanding win in a two-year-old maiden contest over 1150 metres at Devonport. Valiant Khan was a $28,000 purchase for his trainer Adam Trinder from the Berkeley Park Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions National Yearling Sale. He is the fourth foal and second winner out of the unplaced Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare Western Cape. Real Steel, who has had 12 southern hemisphere-bred runners, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of JP¥3,000,000 (approx. AU$31,175) at Shadai Stallion Station in Japan.

 

The Autumn Sun – Arrowfield Stud’s first-season sire The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) was handed his fifth individual winner from 25 starters when the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Coco Sun (2 f ex Miss Hufflepuff by Encosta De Lago) ran out a debut winner at Geelong. Out of the winning Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) mare Miss Hufflepuff, Coco Sun is a half-sister to winners Chocolate Kisses (Exceed And Excel) and Queen Of Wizadry (Not A Single Doubt). The Autumn Sun will stand the upcoming breeding season for a fee of $66,000 (inc GST).

 

Trapeze Artist – Flying Concello (2 f ex Little Gypsy by Lonhro) broke her maiden at the second attempt, becoming the eighth individual first-crop winner for her Widden Stud sire Trapeze Artist (Snitzel). Flying Concello, who finished fifth at Moe on debut, is the second foal and first winner out of Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Little Gypsy, herself a half-sister to the Group 1-placed Roma Giaconda (Magic Albert). Trapeze Artist, whose eight winners sees him sit equal-second on the leading first season sire by winners chart, has had 32 runners. He will stand for a fee of $55,000 (inc GST) in 2023. 

 

New Group / Grade 1 winners

Bernardini – West Will Power (6 h ex Wild Promises by Wild Event) provided the late Bernardini (A. P. Indy) with a 17th individual elite-level winner when just doing enough to land the Stephen Foster Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Ellis Park. Sporting the silks of breeders Gary and Mary West, West Will Power is the fifth foal out of Graddanehille 3 winner Wild Promises (Wild Event) making him a half-brother to three winners. Bernardini has had a total of 1590 starters.

 

Fastnet Rock – Via Sistina (5 m ex Nigh by Galileo) continued her rapid progression through the stakes-grade ranks when producing a career-best effort to land the Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) at the Curragh, as Coolmore Australia sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill) sired a Group 1 quinella, taking his tally of individual elite-level winners to 43. Earning her third win from four starts since joining the George Boughey yard in October last year, the five-year-old mare added to her wins in the Prix Fille de l’Air (Gr 3, 2100m) and Dahlia Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 1f) on her last two outings. Via Sistina is the fourth and only winning foal out of the unraced Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Nigh, herself a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Kingsgate Native (Mujadil). Fastnet Rock, who has had 2115 starters, will stand the upcoming southern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore’s Jerrys Plains-based stud for a fee of $110,000 (inc GST).

 

Sea The Moon – Fantastic Moon (3 c ex Frangipani by Jukebox Jury) registered his fourth win in five starts and in the process became the third individual elite-level scorer for Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars) when taking out the Deutsches Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Hamburg. Bought for €49,000 as a yearling, Fantastic Moon is the second foal out of the winning Jukebox Jury (Montjeu) mare Frangipani, herself a half-sister to a Group 3 winner in Norway. Sea The Moon, who has had 357 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Lanwades Stud for a fee of £25,000 (approx. AU$47,665).

 

Trippi – Winchester Mansion (4 h ex Sea Point by Spectrum) provided his sire Trippi (End Sweep) with a 13th individual elite-level winner when taking out the Durban July (Gr 1, 2200m) at Greyville. Out of the winning Spectrum (Rainbow Quest) mare Sea Point, Winchester Mansion is a half-brother to fellow Grade 1 scorer Sand And Sea (Twice Over) and to winners Casablanca Kid (Horse Chestnut) and Gertrude Bell (Kingsbarns). Trippi stands at Drakenstein Stud for a private fee and has had 1032 starters.

 

New stakes winners

Anodin – King Gold (6 h ex Miss Gandelia by Kingsalsa) built on his excellent recent run of form when the six-year-old made a belated breakthrough in stakes company with victory in the Prix de la Porte Maillot (Gr 3, 1400m) at Longchamp. In winning the race, the Nicolas Caullery-trained entire became the eighth individual stakes winner for Anodin (Anabaa), who stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras De La Haie Neuve for a fee of €4,000 (approx. AU$6,565) and has had 293 starters.

 

Bolt D’Oro – Bold Discovery (3 c ex Caribbean Babe by Arch) became the seventh individual stakes winner for Spendthrift Farm stallion Bolt D’Oro (Medaglia D’Oro) when landing the Celebration Stakes (Listed, 1m) at the Curragh. Bold Discovery is the first foal out of the Arch (Kris S) mare Caribbean Babe, herself a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Independence Hall (Constitution) and Grade 3 scorer Black Onyx (Rock Hard Ten). Bolt D’Oro, who has had 132 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$35,000 (approx. AU$52,570).

 

Burgundy – Flower Of Wanaka (4 m ex Wanaka by Green Perfume) provided her sire Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice) with a tenth individual stakes winner from 230 starters when scoring in the Tauranga Classic (Listed, 1400m) at Hastings. Out of the winning Green Perfume (Naevus) mare Wanaka, Flower Of Wanaka is a half-sister to Frances Tressady Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) scorer Tavarnelle (Zabeel). Burgundy died in 2019.

 

Cotai Glory – Hotline Bling (4 c ex Kocna by Aussie Rules) became the eighth individual stakes winner for Cotai Glory (Exceed And Excel) when scoring in the Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Bro Park. Hotline Bling is the second foal out of the winning Aussie Rules (Danehill) mare Kocna, who was also third in the Italian 1,000 Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m). Cotai Glory, who has had 198 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Tally Ho Stud for a fee of €12,500 (approx. AU$20,450).

 

Curlin – Curlin (Smart Strike) inched closer to a landmark ton of individual stakes winners when Solo Album (3 f ex Summer Solo by Arch) moved the tally on to 98 with a victory in the Selene Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Woodbine. Bought for US$535,000 at Keeneland as a yearling, Solo Album is out of the Grade 1-placed multiple winner Summer Solo (Arch). Curlin stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Hill ‘N Dale Farms for a fee of US$225,000 (approx. AU$337,485) and has had 897 starters.

 

Deep Brillante – Elton Barows (3 c ex Shonan Carat by Brian’s Time) became the fifth individual stakes winner for Deep Brillante (Deep Impact) when winning the Radio Nikkei Sho (Gr 3, 1800m) at Fukushima. Elton Barows, who took his career record to three wins from seven starts, is the first stakes winner from six runners out of Shonan Carat (Brian’s Time). Deep Brillante, who has had 496 starters, stands at Breeders Stallion Station in Japan. 

 

Eurozone – Mnementh (6 g ex Yurrapendi by Pendragon) provided his sire Eurozone (Northern Meteor) with a fifth individual stakes winner from 240 starters when landing the Santa Ana Lane Sprint Final (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington. Mnementh is the only winning foal out of the winning Pendragon (Elnadim) mare Yurrapendi.

 

Exceed And Excel – Renosu (3 g ex Ghisoni by Lonhro) became the 210th individual stakes winner from 2481 starters for Darley stalwart Exceed And Excel (Danehill) when making all to land the Creswick Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington. Renosu is the first foal out of the Surround Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and Glenlogan Park Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Ghisoni (Lonhro), herself a daughter of the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and Surround Stakes winner Portillo (Red Ransom), who also placed in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). Ghisoni has a two-year-old brother to Renosu named Restonica, a yearling colt by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) named Pietroso and a weanling filly by Bivouac (Exceed And Excel). Exceed And Excel will stand the upcoming breeding season at Kelvinside for a fee of $132,000 (inc GST).

 

Exosphere – Exosphere (Lonhro) took his tally of stakes winners to six when his son Upper Limits (3 g ex Defar by Wanted) claimed the Aquanita Stakes (Listed, 2000m) at Belmont. Upper Limits, who took his race record to two wins from 11 starts, is the second foal and first winner out of the placed mare Defar, herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter Nurse Kitchen (Savabeel). Exosphere, who has had 185 runners, will stand the 2023 season at Oaklands Park for a fee of $6,600 (inc GST).

 

Extreme Choice – Knight’s Choice (3 g ex Midnight Pearl by More Than Ready) continued his rapid progression when landing a fourth race in succession in the Winx Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m) at the Sunshine Coast, providing Newgate Farm stallion Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) with a tenth individual stakes winner from 72 starters. Purchased by his co-trainer John Symons and Michael Kirby for $85,000 at Book 2 of the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Knight’s Choice is the only winner from four foals to race out of the winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Midnight Pearl. Extreme Choice will stand the upcoming breeding season for a fee of $275,000 (inc GST).

 

Frosted – Darley stallion Frosted (Tapit) sired his 20th individual stakes winner when Jasper Krone (4 c ex Fancy Kitten by Kitten’s Joy) won The CBC Sho (Gr 3, 1200m) at Chukyo. A US$25,000 Keeneland yearling buy, Jasper Krone was subsequently purchased by his trainer Hideyuki Mori for US$90,000 at the Ocala Select 2YO Sale. The four-year-old is the first foal out of the stakes-placed mare Fancy Kitten (Kitten’s Joy). Frosted stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Darley’s Jonabell Stud in America for a fee of US$10,000 (approx. AU$15,000) and has had 393 starters.

 

Galileo – Library (3 f ex Words by Dansili) became the 366th individual stakes winner for the late Galileo when she took out the Naas Oaks Trial (Listed, 1m 2f). A Coolmore homebred, Library is the fourth foal out of Group 3-winning Dansili (Danehill) mare Words, herself a half-sister to, among others, Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) runner-up US Army Ranger (Galileo). Galileo has had 2469 starters.

 

Iffraaj – Audience (4 g ex Ladyship by Oasis Dream) became the 95th individual stakes winner for Darley stallion Iffraaj (Zafonic) when causing an upset to win the Criterion Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Newmarket. The fourth foal out of the Listed-winning Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Ladyship, herself out of the dual Group 1 scorer Peeress (Pivotal), Audience is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Dark Lady (Dark Angel) and two other winners. Iffraaj, who has had 1843 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £15,000 (approx. AU$28,440).

 

Khozan – Foggy Night (5 f ex Settling Seas by Stormy Atlantic) became the 12th individual stakes winner for Khozan (Distorted Humor) when taking out the Delaware Oaks (Gr 3, 8.5f). Out of the winning Stormy Atlantic mare Settling Seas, Foggy Night is a full-sister to winners Farm Boy and Khosea and a half-sister to winners Miss Cay O’sea (Exclusive Quality) and Cowboy Bob (Wildcat Heir). Khozan, who has had 223 starters, previously stood at Journeyman Stud in Florida.

 

Kingman – Juddmonte Farm stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit) took his tally of individual stakes winners to 67 last week when siring a stakes-race double. Mr Moliere (3 g ex Armande by Sea The Stars) became the 66th individual stakes winner for the sire when landing the Prix de Saint-Patrick (Listed, 1600m) at Chantilly. Mr Moliere is out of the Group 2-winning Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) mare Armande. Kingman moved on to 67 when Turf King (3 c ex Sweet Acclaim by Acclamation) took out the Marine Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Woodbine. Bought out of the Ocala March Sale as a two-year-old for US$180,000, Turf King is out of the Group 3-placed winning mare Sweet Acclaim (Acclamation). Kingman, who has had 554 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Farm for a fee of £125,000 (approx. AU$238,235).

 

Kodiac – Star Of Mystery (2 f ex Mistrusting by Shamardal) proved to be a cut above her eight rivals when running out an easy winner of the Empress Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Newmarket, providing Kodiac (Danehill) with an 87th individual stakes winner in the process. The Godolphin homebred is the fifth foal out of the Listed-winning Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare Mistrusting, making her a half-sister to, among others, Grade 1-winning siblings Althiqa (Dark Angel) and Mysterious Night. Kodiac, who has had 1552 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Tally-Ho Stud for a fee of €40,000 (approx. AU$65,490).

 

Lethal Force – The prolific Commanche Falls (6 g ex Joyeaux by Mark Of Esteem) gained a well-deserved breakthrough in black type company when he scored in the Dash Stakes (Listed, 6f) at the Curragh and in the process became the third individual stakes winner for Lethal Force (Dark Angel). Bought by his trainer Michael Dods for just 11,000gns as a yearling, Commanche Falls is the fifth foal out of Joyeaux (Mark Of Esteem), making him a half-brother to Group 3 winner Dakota Gold (Equiano). Joyeaux is a half-sister to Italian Group 1 scorer Aoife Alainn (Dr Fong). Group 1 winner Lethal Force, who has had 308 starters, formerly stood at Haras de Grandcamp in France.

 

Magna Grecia – Myconian (2 c ex Sirici by Choisir) became the first stakes winner for Coolmore former shuttler Magna Grecia (Invincible Spirit) when he took out the Prix Yacowlef (Listed, 1000m) at Deauville. A €27,000 yearling buy, Myconian is the second living foal out of the Listed winner Sirici (Choisir). Magna Grecia, who has had 23 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €15,000 (approx. AU$24,570). 

 

No Nay Never – Having finished runner-up in the Albany Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Royal Ascot, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Matrika (2 f ex Muravka by High Chaparral) quickly made amends and opened her stakes account when winning the Airlie Stud Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at the Curragh, providing Coolmore stallion No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) with a 51st individual stakes winner. Matrika is the seventh foal out of the unraced High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) mare Muravka, making her a sister to Japanese Grade 3 winner Unicorn Lion and a half-sister to Group 1 scorer and Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) hero The Wow Signal (Starspangledbanner). No Nay Never, who has had 645 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €175,000 (approx. AU$286,530).

 

Quality Road – Wadsworth (3 g ex Dickinson by Medaglia D’Oro) justified his position at the head of the betting when winning the American Derby (Listed, 8.5f) at Ellis Park and in the process became the 73rd individual stakes winner for Quality Road (Elusive Quality). A Godolphin homebred, Wadsworth is the second foal out of the Grade 1-winning Medaglia D’Oro (El Prdao) mare Dickinson, herself a daughter of Grade 1 winner Little Belle (A. P. Indy). Quality Road, who has had 720 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Kentucky’s Lane’s End Farm for a fee of US$200,000 (approx. AU$299,985).

 

Saxon Warrior – Thornbrook (3 f ex Lillebonne by Danehill Dancer) became the fifth individual stakes winner for Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) when she came out on top in a tight finish to the Prix de Bagatelle (Listed, 1600m) at Chantilly. Thornbrook is the sixth foal out of the winning Danehill Dancer (Danehill) mare Lillebonne, making her a half-sister to, among others, Hong Kong Listed winner Magnanimous (Mehmas). Saxon Warrior stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore in Ireland for a fee of €35,000 (approx. AU$57,305) and has had 111 starters.

 

Sessions – Ihts Closing Inn (3 f ex Ihtsatune by Ihtiram) became the third individual stakes winner for Sessions (Lonhro) when winning the Belmont Oaks (Listed, 2000m). In landing a fourth consecutive success, Ihts Closing Inn took her career record to sevens wins from 14 starts. The filly is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Saint Tropez (Not A Single Doubt), being the third winner out of the stakes-placed mare Ihtsatune. Sessions, who has had 78 runners, will stand for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) this year. 

 

Starspangledbanner – Exxtra (3 f ex Rolling Stone by Raven’s Pass) became the 31st individual stakes winner for Starspangledbanner (Choisir) when she landing the Prix Kistena (Listed, 1200m) at Deauville. Exxtra is a half-sister to two winners in Italy, being the third foal out of Rolling Stone (Raven’s Pass). Coolmore’s Starspangledbanner, who has had 577 starters, will stand the upcoming breeding season in Australia for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

 

Tapit – Gainesway Farm stallion Tapit (Pulpit) sired a stakes double last week to take his tally to 161. Fort Bragg (3 c ex March X Press by Shanghai Bobby) edged out Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) by a nose to land the Dwyer Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Belmont to hand the sire a 160th stakes winner. Trained by Bob Baffert, Fort Bragg, who was co-bred by Henry Field Bloodstock, is the first foal out of the US stakes winner March X Press (Shanghai Bobby).  The double was completed when Tyson (4 c ex Honouring by Smart Strike) won the Dominion Day Stakes (Gr 3, 9f) at Woodbine. Passed in for US$250,000 at Keeneland as a yearling, Tyson is the first foal out of Honouring (Smart Strike), herself a sister to Grade 1 winner Steaming. Tapit, who has had 1379 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere at Gainesway Farm for a fee of US$185,000 (approx. AU$277,485).

 

Telperion – The Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Dolphin Skin (2 f ex Tempo Manor by General Nediym) broke her maiden in stakes grade as she landed the $175,000 Taj Rossi Series Final (Listed, 1600m) at Flemington, providing his sire Telperion (Street Cry) with a second individual stakes winner from 75 starters. A $13,000 purchase for Flemington Bloodstock out of the Westbury Stud draft at last year’s New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale, Dolphin Skin is the third winner from six to race out of the four-time-winning General Nediym (Nediym) mare Tempo Manor, herself a half-sister to Group 3 winner Ready To Rip (More Than Ready) and stakes-placed scorer Sir Lago (Encosta De Lago). Telperion stood at Westbury Stud before he was exported to China.

 

Twilight Son – Vetiver (3 f ex Poana by New Approach) made it three wins in five starts when landing the Eternal Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Carlisle and in the process became the eighth individual stakes winner for Twilight Son (Kyllachy). Sporting the silks of her breeders Cheveley Park Stud, Vetiver is the second foal out of Poana (New Approach), herself a half-sister to Group 3 winner Pontenuovo (Green Tune), the pair being out of the Group 1 winner Porlezza (Sicyos). Twilight Son stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Cheveley Park for a fee of £7,000 (approx. AU$13,350) and has had 209 starters.

 

Wootton Bassett – Bucanero Fuerte (2 c ex Frida La Blonde by Elusive City) became the 35th individual stakes winner for Coolmore’s Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) when he just got up to touch off Unquestionable (Wootton Bassett) in the Railway Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at the Curragh. A €165,000 purchase at Arqana as a yearling, Bucanero Fuerte is the fifth foal out of Frida La Blonde (Elusive City), making him a brother to, among others, Group 1 scorer and Swettenham Stud sire Wooded. Wootton Bassett stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €150,000 (approx. AU$245,685) and will shuttle to Coolmore Australia for a fee of $93,500 (inc GST). He has had 413 starters.

 

Zarak – Princess Zelda (3 f ex Petite Duchesse by Dai Jin) stretched her unbeaten record to two and in the process became the 13th individual stakes winner for Zarak (Dubawi) when she landed the Hamburger Stutenpreis (Gr 3, 2200m). Princess Zelda is out of Petite Duchesse (Dai Jin), who was unbeaten in a two-start career. Aga Khan stallion Zarak, who will be available for covers on southern hemisphere time this year, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras de Bonneval for a fee of €60,000 (approx.
