Atwell snaps up Karli’s Karma for ‘bargain’ $100,000

As predicted, the Group 3-winning mare Karli’s Karma (Deep Field) was the star attraction of Sunday’s Magic Millions Perth Winter Thoroughbred Sale, selling to Darling View Thoroughbreds’ Brent Atwell for $100,000.

Offered during the Thoroughbred sale element of the one-day auction, the daughter of Deep Field (Northern Meteor) was consigned by Summer Dickson Racing for whom she won six races, headed by her victory in this season’s Eurythmic Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ascot.

Atwell said the $298,476-earner would be immediately retired and be covered by Darling Views’ headline stallion Playing God (Blackfriars).

“She is going to go to Playing God first up and then we will decide from there once she has had her first foal where she then goes. She could stay here in Perth or whether she heads east,” Atwell told ANZ Bloodstock News on Sunday.

“I had her valued around the $150,000 to $200,000 mark every day of the week and thankfully, everyone was asleep in WA today [Sunday], so it all worked out well. I couldn’t quite believe that she made that, but we’ll take it – you have to have a win every now and then.

“When we got to $100,000, I thought, ‘ah well, we’ll see what happens here’. But that was all I needed – that was it. We were very happy, but we had a little bit more up our sleeves and didn’t have to use it.”

The mare is out of the winning Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) mare Sravana, who is herself a sister to Macau Listed winner Hostwin Achilles and she is also a half-sister to dual Listed winner Eximus (Exceed And Excel).

While Atwell was delighted to secure the mare for that price, he felt both sides of a tough market during the yearling element of Sunday’s sale where he consigned the top lot, a Shamus Award (Snitzel) colt, who was bought by Pearce Racing for $80,000.

“He is a lovely, athletic colt and I was pretty confident he would sell well. We were happy with $80,000 in that market. Again, I thought he could have made more, but the market is the market. It was tough going selling today [Sunday]. Thankfully, we were on the right end buying the mare.

“We take the win when we’re buying, but then you have to meet that market when you are selling and it is what it is.”

Catalogued as Lot 71, the youngster is out of Snippety Belle (Snippetson), herself a half-sister to Restricted Listed winner Enchanted Dream (Patronize) and Mystic Maid (Patronize), a three-time winner who was placed at Group 2 level.
