The Lindsay Park-trained and Shadwell-raced colt Barjeel (Foxwedge), who had not finished further back than fourth in his first three starts, won impressively at Sandown Hillside second up this preparation. He broke from barrier three under Callan Murray and was settled in fifth place early on, one off the rails. As the race unfolded he improved nicely at the home turn and he eventually hit front at the 200 metre mark, being able to go on and win impressively by one and a half lengths in a time of 1:24:31.
Barjeel is the fourth foal out of the Group Two-winning mare Te Akau Coup (Thorn Park) and becomes the mare’s fourth winner from all four of her foals. The New Zealand-bred Te Akau Coup is out of Beyond The Sunset (Gone West) making her a half-sister to the Listed winner Don Garcia (Danehill), while Barjeel’s third dam is the Group One-placed Bineyah (Sadler’s Wells).
