The Lindsay Park-trained Biscayne Bay (Sebring) improved on an unplaced debut performance to score impressively at Sandown on Wednesday.
The two-year-old filly finished a luckless eight lengths behind Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 2, 1100m) runner-up Scorched Earth (Nicconi) in the Magic Millions SA 2YO Classic (1200m) last month, having been checked at the start.
Stepping up an extra 100 metres in trip at Sandown, Biscayne Bay comfortably got off the mark at the second time of asking in the two-year-old fillies handicap over 1300 metres, with the win suggesting another increase in distance could bring further improvement.
Having settled midfield in the 14-runner field, Biscayne Bay peeled wide up the straight and scooted clear inside the final 100 metres to defeat Charity Spirit (Cable Bay) by two lengths, with Divina Calle (Street Boss) a further length behind in third.
The performance impressed winning jockey Mark Zahra, who said: “Being by Sebring, she didn’t mind a little jar out of the track. When I went for her, she really quickened up well.”
A $410,000 purchase by Sun Bloodstock from the Widden Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Biscayne Bay is a half-sister to Tenley (Medaglia D’Oro), winner of the 2019 Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).
She is the second winner from four to race out of Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Fratianne, who is a winning granddaughter of 1993 Winfield Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) and Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Skating (At Talaq).
Fratianne produced a filly from the first crop of Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) last spring and is now in foal to Zoustar (Northern Meteor).
