Having his second start after finishing second on debut at Hawkesbury over 1000 metres on 24 July, Calanda began well from barrier five in the six-horse field and soon crossed to lead under jockey Blake Shinn. He travelled well, fought off challengers on straightening and then went on to score a comfortable length and a half victory, with his final 600 metres run in a time of 33.67 seconds.
Calanda becomes the seventh winner from eight foals to race out of the Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Speedy Bell (Brocco) whose other winners include the Group Three winner Speedy Natalie (Al Maher), herself the dam of Vanity Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Sweet And Speedy (Street Cry). His second dam is the dual winner Celebration Bell (True Vision) who produced six winners from seven foals to race including the Listed winner and Group Two-placed Whoever (Redoute’s Choice) and the stakes performers Stratford (Stratum) and Superforce (Mukaddamah).
Speedy Bell died in August this year with her final foal, now a yearling, colt by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit).
