A trip to Melbourne last Friday proved fruitful for South Australian-based trainer Michael Hickmott when three-year-old colt Cash (Snitzel) put on a dazzling display to secure an impressive debut win at The Valley.
A $3.60 second-elect with Adelaide-based rider Todd Pannell aboard, the $1,100,000 buy jumped well from barrier six to settle one-out one-back with cover, before peeling out at the 200-metre mark with an eye-catching turn-of-foot to defeat Looselipssinkships (Overshare) by 0.75 lengths with Belnera (So You Think) a further 1.75 lengths away in third.
“That’s a big thrill.” Hickmott told Racing.com. “It was a big decision to buy a horse for this amount of money and take him back to my little farm in Wellington. I think he’s going to be a really good horse, he’ll be the best I’ve trained by a significant margin. What he’s doing tonight he knows nothing, so I’m really excited about him.”
“Its a huge step [in my career], but a great privilege [to have a horse like this]. I’ve got some of the biggest owners and smartest racing minds in Australia who have entrusted me with a horse that could end up being quite a valuable colt. I can’t thank them enough.”
Hickmott said he might target the Magic Millions VIC 3YO & 4YO Classic (1200m) at Caulfield on December 14 with Cash next, or alternatively wait for the autumn.
“He is a nice horse.” Pannell said post-race. “He was a little bit on toe in the mounting yard and fidgety in the barriers, and didn’t step as good as I’d hoped. Eventually we landed in a good spot and he had to adapt quickly to the track. He cornered beautifully. I’m sure there will be a lot of improvement to come.”
“He’s definitely one of the best horses I’ve ridden, certainly in South Australia at the moment from his trackwork and trials. When we put the blinkers on in a trial he improved immensely. He is still a bit colty and has his moments. But he’s starting to come on and grow up into a horse”
Cash is the second foal and first foal to race out of Super Cash (Written Tycoon), who is a four-time stakes-winning mare, including the Rubiton Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) on two occasions. She also has a yearling filly by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), and a foal colt at foot by Dundeel (High Chaparral).
Bred by Arrowfield Stud and Seymour Bloodstock, Cash was a $1,100,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase for his trainer and Douglas Whyte Racing with Arrowfield Stud retaining a share in the colt.
