Catalogue released for 2021 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale
Yearlings by Needs Further (Encosta De Lago), Alpine Eagle (High Chaparral) and the progeny of freshman sires including Zululand (Fastnet Rock) will be on offer at next year’s Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale.
The auction house yesterday released a 122-lot catalogue for the February 22 sale, which for the first time will be held at Quercus Park in Carrick near Launceston.
Magic Millions Victoria and Tasmania representative Tim Brown was pleased with the size and quality of the catalogue assembled.
He also marvelled at the willingness of Tasmanian breeding and racing participants to keep backing their local industry and he is confident the loyal supporters will again be active at next year’s sale.
“Tasmania’s racing was shut down for a period earlier this year (because of Covid-19), but they are a resilient bunch and their racing is going well now,” Brown said yesterday. “They have their track back at Hobart and Launceston is racing well. The trainers such as Adam Trinder, John Blacker, Scott Brunton and those guys, they are all going well, and Siggy Carr, since she has moved to Seven Mile Beach, has absolutely leapt out of the ground.
“So, I am cautiously optimistic that the sale is going to be as good as previous sales.”
Motree Thoroughbreds’ Mandy Gunn has remained loyal to her local sale where she will offer the brother to smart stakes-winning sprinter-miler Mandela Effect (Turffontein) and 12 other yearlings.
Gunn rejected private offers to buy the colt out of Morell (West Quest) – whose fourth foal, a sister to the Scott Brunton-trained Mandela Effect, made $80,000 at this year’s Launceston sale – while also declining overtures to offer him to market on the mainland.
Prominent local vendor Armidale Stud will offer 31 yearlings, including progeny of former resident stallion Needs Further, Alpine Eagle, Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) as well as Star Turn (Star Witness) and Flying Artie (Artie Schiller).
Grenville Stud, whose new stallion, VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Zululand has 18 yearlings catalogued, will offer 21 lots.
In total, there will be yearlings by 51 individual stallions including seven first season sires.
Brown expects regular mainland buyers to again attend the Tasmania sale next year.
“There’s Ellerton Zahra Racing, John McArdle, John Foote came this year and bought a few and hopefully he comes back next year,” he said.
“They enjoy it and they come and buy nice horses who are well priced.”
