Double for Harry Angel
New winners
Harry Angel (pictured above)- Darley shuttler Harry Angel sired his first two winners this week, beginning with Vicious Harry’s (2 c ex Umneeyatee by Encosta De Lago) win in the Prix Du Coq Chantant (1000m) at Chantilly. Trained by Mauricio Delcher Sanchez, the colt beat Neversay (No Nay Never) by one and a half lengths. There was a further three lengths back to Grecian Star (Sea The Moon) in third. Bred by Medya Sarl and Tarik Tekce, the colt was sold to MAB Agency for €28,000 at Arqana’s October Yearling Sale last autumn and now sports the colours of Cuadra Mediterraneo. Vicious Harry is out of the Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) mare Umneeyatee, who is a half-sister to the South African Grade 1 winner Amanee, a daughter of Pivotal (Polar Falcon), and Jadeer, a Listed-placed son by Fastnet Rock (Danehill), and two other minor winners. Tattersalls Craven Sale graduate Harry Time (2 c ex Silver Rainbow by Starspangledbanner) made an impressive debut at Navan for Michael O’Callaghan and became the second winner from the first crop of Harry Angel (Dark Angel), winning comfortably by a length and a quarter from Broadhurst (No Nay Never), while the favourite Beauty Crescent (Acclamation) was half a length further back in third. Bought for 82,000gns at the breeze ups, Harry Time was bred by Yeomanstown Stud and is out of Listed-winning sprinter Silver Rainbow (Starspangledbanner). Champion sprinter Harry Angel stands his second season at stud in the northern hemisphere for £12,500 (approx. AU$22,120), and will stand the coming southern hemisphere season for $16,500 (inc GST).
Impending – The Team Wells-trained Bold Instinct (2 g ex Dream Food by Snitzel) ran out a ready winner of a maiden over 1009 metres at Devonport on Sunday, providing Darley stallion Impending (Lonhro) with a third individual winner. Running for trainers Leon, Dean and Trent Wells, the gelding ran out a convincing two and three-quarter lengths winner beating Rock’em Baby (Walking Or Dancing) with Lacerate (Charge Forward) just a head further behind in third place. A $150,000 purchase at last year’s Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale, Bold Instinct is the only foal to race out of the placed Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare Dream Food. Impending will stand the upcoming breeding season at Northwood Park for $22,000 (inc. GST).
Russian Revolution – Ekaterina (2 f ex Funtantes by Easy Rocking) provided Newgate Farm stallion Russian Revolution (Snitzel) with a tenth individual winner at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday. The Robert Heathcote-trained filly battled well to narrowly defeat Holtermann (Sooboog) by a neck with a further three-quarters of a length back to War Too All (All Too Hard) in third in a maiden over 1000 metres. Out of the Group 2-winning Easy Rocking (Barathea) mare Funtantes, Ekaterina is a half-sister to the Group 1-placed winner Startantes (Star Turn) and to six-time winner Ziemba (Rothesay). Russian Revolution will stand the 2022 breeding season for a fee of $71,500 (inc. GST).
Sioux Nation – The Archie Watson-trained Brave Emperor (2 c ex Roman Gal by Holy Roman Emperor) provided Coolmore stallion Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy) with a fifth individual winner when coming home strongly to take out a maiden over five furlongs at Chepstow. The colt built upon the promise shown when sixth on his debut to win a shade cosily at the line, beating Espirito (Charm Spirit) by half a length with a further one and three-quarter lengths back to Desperate Hero (Captain Gerrard) in third. Bred by Caroline Hanly and Sean Ronan, Brave Emperor was a £19,000 purchase at last year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearlings Sale and races in the colours of Middleham Park Racing. He is the first foal out of the Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) mare Roman Gal, herself closely related to French Listed-placed winner Madernia (Duke Of Marmalade) and a half-sister to Listed winner and Group 1-placed Salouen (Canford Cliffs). Sioux Nation stands at Castlehyde Stud for €10,000 (approx. AU$15,180).
New Group / Grade 1 winners
Dark Angel – Mangoustine (3 f ex Zotilla by Zamindar) put in a very brave performance at Longchamp to win the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) for trainer Mikel Delzangles. Ridden by Gerald Mosse, the three-year-old filly had to battle hard to beat the English 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Cachet (Aclaim), who was also very brave in defeat, by a head, with a further short-head back to Times Square (Zarak) in third in a very tight finish to the first Classic of the French season. The win also provided Yeomanstown Stud stallion Dark Angel (Acclamation) with an 11th elite-level success. Part-owned by former French NBA player Tony Parker, Mangoustine is the fourth foal out of the unplaced Zamindar (Gone West) mare Zotilla, who herself is a half-sister to Flotilla (Mizzen Mast), a winner of this race and the Breeders’ Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 8f). Dark Angel stands for €60,000 (approx. AU$90,000).
Gleneagles – Highland Chief (5 h ex Pink Symphony by Montjeu) caused an upset in the Man o’War Stakes (Gr 1, 11f) at Belmont as he provided Gleneagles (Galileo) with a second individual elite-level winner and a 19th stakes win overall. Having just his second outing for Graham Motion since moving from British trainers Paul and Oliver Cole, the five-year-old was always handy, beating Gufo (Declaration Of War) by a length. The odds-on favourite and Breeders’ Cup Turf (Gr 1, 12f) winner Yibir (Dubawi) was a further neck back in third after starting tardily. The fourth foal out of the Group 3-winning Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare Pink Symphony, Highland Chief is a half-brother to winners African (Dubawi) and Pink Phantom (Oasis Dream). Coolmore stallion Gleneagles stands at Castlehyde Stud for €15,000 (approx. AU$22,500).
Maurice – The profile of Arrowfield’s Japanese shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero) took another step forward when Mazu (3 g ex Chatelaine by Flying Spur) became the third individual elite-level winner for the stallion by scoring a tough victory in the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) at Eagle Farm. Mazu joined VRC (Gr 1, 2500m) and Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Hitotsu as a Group 1 winner in Australia, narrowly denying Godolphin’s Paulele (Dawn Approach) to win the Queensland sprint by a head, with Kiwi raider Entriviere (Tavistock) a half-length away in third. Triple Crown Syndications’ Mazu was winning for the sixth consecutive time having claimed the Arrowfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m), Fireball Stakes (Listed, 1100m), Darby Munro Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and Brian Crowley Stakes (Listed, 1200m) this season. A $180,000 buy for Triple Crown from the draft of Parson’s Creek Pastoral at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Mazu joins 2009 Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Headway (Charge Forward) as an elite-level winner out of the Flying Spur (Danehill) mare Chatelaine. Champion second season sire-elect Maurice will stand for an increased fee of $82,500 (inc GST) this breeding season.
Tarzino – Jungle Magnate (3 g ex The Love Of Money by Casino Prince) came home with a wet sail to win the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Morphettville, providing Westbury Stud stallion Tarzino (Tavistock), who won the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, with a first individual elite-level winner. The gelding came home a one-and-three-quarter-lengths victor over Yaphet (Blackfriars) with a further three-quarters of a length back to Detonator Jack (Jakkalberry) in third. Jungle Magnate is out of the Casino Prince (Flying Spur) mare The Love Of Money, herself a half-sister to Listed winner First Crush (Husson) and the Listed-placed winner Dark Matter (Stratum). Tarzino will stand the 2022 breeding season for NZ$15,000 (Plus GST).
New stakes winners
Awtaad – The John O’Shea-trained Diamil (4 h ex Diylawa by Mastercraftsman) notched a first stakes success in the Members’ Handicap (Listed, 1600m) at Eagle Farm. The Irish-bred import was scoring for the second time in Australia, having won impressively at Warwick Farm in March, and added to a win at Goodwood in the UK. Diamil came from near the rear of the eight-runner field to deny fellow Irish import Sikandarabad (Dr Fong) by three-quarters of a length, while Big Boy Roy (Dissident) finished third, a length behind the winner. Awtaad, whose first crop are northern hemisphere four-year-olds, is the sire of two winners in Australia, as well as Irish Group 3 winner Create Belief. From an Aga Khan family, Diamil is the only winner out of Diylawa (Mastercraftsman), herself a half-sister to Listed winner and Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-up Dibayani (Shamardal). Brazen Beau – Zapateo (3 f ex Jerezana by Lonhro) won the Denise’s Joy Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone and provided Darley stallion Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) with a 17th individual stakes winner. Sent off as a $6 chance, the filly scored a length success over A Very Fine Red (Deep Field) with a long neck further back to Coco Rox (Better Than Ready) in third. Zapateo is out of the Listed-winning and Group 3-placed Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Jerezana and is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Osborne Bulls (Street Cry). Brazen Beau stands at Northwood Park for $44,000 (inc. GST).
Camelot – Coolmore stallion Camelot (Montjeu) was provided with his 44th and 45th individual stakes winners this week, beginning with Point Nepean (4 h ex Sea Goddess by Galileo) who scored in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington. Trained by Robert Hickmott, the four-year-old gained a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) by coming home a three-quarter length winner over Luncies (Iffraaj) with a further two and a quarter lengths back to Through Irish Eyes (Tavistock) in third. Point Nepean is out of the Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Sea Goddess and is a half-brother to the winner Legend Of Gods (Lawman). Cairde Go Deo (3 f ex Elusive Galaxy by Elusive City) then provided Camelot with a 45th individual stakes winner when she scored an impressive success in the Yeats Stakes (Listed, 1m5f) at Navan. Trained by Ger Lyons, the three-year-old filly came home a widening eight-length winner over Hotter Than Hades (Make Believe) with a further three lengths back to Willesee (Gleneagles) in third. The sixth foal out of the winning Elusive City (Elusive Quality) mare Elusive Galaxy, Cairde Go Deo is a sister to French winner Heroine and a half-sister to winners Afjaan (Henrythenavigator), Gala Celebration (Excelebration) and Ray Of Light (Canford Cliffs). Caravaggio – Tiber Flow (3 c ex Malabar by Raven’s Pass) provided Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) with a fifth individual stakes winner when just holding on in the Carnarvon Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Newbury. Trained by William Haggas, the three-year-old colt travelled best throughout the contest and grabbed the lead inside the final furlong, holding on well at the line when challenged by Ehraz (Showcasing) late on to win by a short-head. Sam Maximus (Showcasing) was a further one and a quarter lengths back in third place. Tiber Flow is the first foal out of the Group 3-winning Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality) mare Malabar, herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner and sire Poet’s Word (Poet’s Voice) out of a winning half-sister to Group 3 winner Ursa Major (Galileo) and Listed winner Inchiri (Sadler’s Wells). Former Coolmore shuttler Caravaggio stands at Ashford Stud for US$35,000 (approx. AU$50,625).
Constitution – We The People (3 c ex Letchworth by Tiznow) provided Constitution (Tapit) with a 34th individual stakes winner when he scored an ultra-impressive first success at stakes level in the Peter Pan Stakes (Gr 3, 9f) at Belmont. Trained by Rodolphe Brisset, the three-year-old colt came home a huge ten and a quarter lengths winner over Golden Glider (Ghostzapper) with just a nose further back to Electability (Quality Road) in third. We The People is the fourth foal out of the unraced Tiznow (Cee’s Tizzy) mare Letchworth, herself a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Stratford Hill (A.P. Indy) and Canadian stakes winner Armistice Day (Declaration Of War) out of a Grade 1-winning half-sister to Grade 2 winner Graeme Hall (Dehere). Constitution stands at WinStar Farm for US$85,000 (approx. AU$122,500).
Deep Field – Newgate’s Deep Field (Northern Meteor) sired his 14th individual stakes winner when Rustic Steel (4 g ex Ten Carat Rock by Deep Field) backed up his win in the valuable The Coast (1600m) with a victory in the Scone Cup (Listed, 1600m). The Kris Lees-trained gelding got the better of Dr Drill (Dansili) by half a length with Atishu (Savabeel) the same margin away in third. Rustic Steel is one of three winners out of Ten Carat Rock (Rock Of Gibraltar), an unraced half-sister to the Group 1-winning trio Redoute’s Choice, Manhattan Rain and Platinum Scissors. Ten Carat Rock was most recently bought by Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock for $400,000 from Newgate at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. Deep Field stands for a fee of $88,000 (all fees include GST).
Dubawi – Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) sired his 229th individual stakes winner when the impeccably bred Goldistyle (4 f ex Goldikova by Anabaa) registered a valuable victory for her connections by landing the Prix Maurice Zilber – Fonds Europeen de l’Elevage (Listed, 1400m) at Longchamp. Trained by Carlos Laffon-Paris, Goldistyle, the fifth foal out of the brilliant Goldikova (Anabaa), was winning for the second time on her sixth start as she beat Internationalangel (Dark Angel) by a length and a half. Wooturn (Wootton Bassett) was another three-quarters of a length away in third. Dubawi stands at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £250,000 (Approx. AU$441,190).
Farhh – Fonteyn (3 f ex Luzia by Cape Cross) just did enough to see off the challenge of favourite Grande Dame (Lope De Vega) in the Michael Seely Memorial Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m) at York, providing Farhh (Pivotal) with a tenth individual stakes winner in the process. Trained by Kevin Ryan, the three-year-old scored by a head with Love Interest (Time Test) another two-and-a-half lengths away in third. Fonteyn, who was winning for the first time after finishing in the frame in each of her three previous starts, is the first foal out of the unraced Luzia (Cape Cross). Farhh stands at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket for an undisclosed fee.
Fastnet Rock – Lust (4 g ex Desire Moi by Galileo) provided Coolmore stallion Fastnet Rock (Danehill) with a 187th individual stakes winner when scoring in a determined success in the Owenstown Stud Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Naas. Trained by Ger Lyons, the four-year-old gelding was forced to dig deep to fend off the late challenge of Diadora (Dansili) to win by one and a quarter lengths. There was a further three-quarters of a length back to Laughifuwant (Roderic O’Connor) in third. The second foal out of the Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Desire Moi, herself a sister to Group 1 winner Lush Lashes and Listed-placed winner Claudio Monteverdi, Lust is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Maker Of Kings (Zoffany). Fastnet Rock stands for US$165,000 (approx. AU$237,750).
Footstepsinthesand – The Joseph O’Brien-trained Brostaigh (3 f ex Coachella by Danehill) continued her rapid progression when she won the Sole Power Sprint Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Naas. The three-year-old filly ended last campaign with a maiden win at Dundalk and reappeared with a close fourth in the Polonia Stakes (Listed, 5.5f), beaten just a length that day. Ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, Brostaigh showed a good determination to beat last year’s winner Logo Hunter (Brazen Beau) by one and a half lengths with a further half-length back to the favourite Geocentric (Kodiac) in third. The tenth foal out of the unraced Danehill (Danzig) mare Coachella, herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Maids Causeway (Giant’s Causeway), Brostaigh is closely related to French winner Llanes (Giant’s Causeway) and is a half-sister to six winners. The victory provided Coolmore stallion Footstepsinthesand (Giant’s Causeway) with his 69th individual stakes winner. He stands at Castlehyde Stud for €12,500 (approx. AU$18,750).
Frankel – Juddmonte Farm stallion Frankel (Galileo) had another stakes double this week, bringing his overall tally to 95 individual stakes winners. The John and Thady Gosden-trained Nashwa (3 f ex Princess Loulou by Pivotal) built upon her impressive Haydock reappearance to claim a first stakes success in the Haras De Bouquetot Fillies’ Trial Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) at Newbury, providing the stallion with a 94th individual stakes winner. The three-year-old filly stayed on well to beat Stay Alert (Fastnet Rock) by one and three-quarter lengths with a further one and a quarter lengths back to Mukaddamah (New Approach) in third, justifying her three Group 1 entries. The third foal out of the Listed-winning and Group 1-placed Pivotal (Polar Falcon) mare Princess Loulou, Nashwa is a half-sister to the winner Louganini (Zoffany). The 95th stakes winner was brought up when Hidden Dimples (3 f ex Manderley by Clodovil) stayed on strongly to score in the Prix de la Seine (Listed, 2200m) at Longchamp. Having broken her maiden on her previous start at Saint-Cloud, the Andre Fabre-trained three-year-old filly threw her hat into the Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) equation with a strong staying performance, beating odds-on favourite La Parisienne (Zarak) by one and a half lengths with a further nose back to Know Thyself (Galileo) in third. The fourth foal out of the winning Clodovil (Danehill) mare Manderley, also fourth in the English 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), Hidden Dimples is a sister to the winner Mrs Frankel. Frankel stands for £200,000 (approx. AU$353,460).
I Am Invincible – In Secret (2 f ex Eloping by Choisir) provided I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) with a 78th individual stakes winner when she scored in the Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone. Sent off as the $3.50 favourite, the James Cummings-trained filly was a $900,000 purchase for Godolphin from the Segenhoe draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The filly came home a length-and-a-half winner over Golden Queen (Gold Standard) with a further half-length back to Penthouse (Capitalist) in third, taking her tally to two wins in two starts. In Secret is out of the Group 3-winning and Group 2-placed Choisir (Danehill Dancer) mare Eloping and is a half-sister to Goulburn winner King Of Hearts (Sebring).
Iffraaj – Francesca (4 m ex Matagouri by High Chaparral) provided Iffraaj (Zafonic) with an 84th individual stakes winner when she was far too good for her rivals in the Rotorua Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Arawa Park. Trained by Andrew Forsman, his first stakes success as a solo trainer, the four-year-old mare dictated the pace throughout to come home a comfortable two-and-a-quarter-length winner over Sassy Merlot (Burgundy) with Secret Amour (Niagara) a further three-quarters of a length back in third. Francesca is the only foal to race out of the winning High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) mare Matagouri. Darley stallion and former shuttler Iffraaj stands at Dalham Hall Stud for £17,500 (approx. AU$30,900).
Kodiac – Tally-Ho Stud resident Kodiac (Danehill) sired his 79th individual stakes winner when Pillow Talk (2 f ex Flawless Jewel by Kheleyf) kept on well to land the Marygate Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 5f) at York. The Karl Burke-trained juvenile built on the promise of her second at Nottingham last month by beating stablemate Yahsat (Dandy Man) by a neck. Jumbeau (Brazen Beau) finished three lengths behind the winner in third. An 80,000 gns purchase out of Book 2 at the Tattersalls’ yearling sale. Pillow Talk is the first foal out of the Flawless Jewel (Kheleyf) who herself is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Sands Of Mali (Panis). Kodiac stands for a fee of €65,000 (approx. AU$97,565).
Nathaniel – Desert Crown (3 c ex Desert Berry by Green Berry) lived up to the hype of recent weeks when running out a hugely impressive winner of the Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 2.5f) at York and in the process propelled himself to the head of the betting for the Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f). Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the son of Nathaniel (Galileo) made it two wins from as many starts when beating Royal Patronage (Wootton Bassett) by three and a quarter lengths with Bluegrass (Galileo) a further two and a half lengths away in third. In following up his maiden win at Nottingham in November, Desert Crown became the 25th individual stakes winner for Newsells Park resident Nathaniel. Bred by Strawberry Fields Stud, Desert Crown was a 280,000gns purchase for Blandford Bloodstock out of Book 2 at the Tattersalls’ yearling sale in 2020. The fifth foal out of the Green Desert (Danzig) mare Desert Berry, he is a half-brother to four winners including the Hong Kong Group 3 scorer Flying Thunder (Archipenko). Nathaniel stands for a fee of £15,000 (approx. AU$26,670).
No Nay Never – Meditate (2 f ex Pembina by Dalakhani) provided No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) with a 38th individual stakes winner when she won the Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Naas. Having made a taking debut when scoring in impressive style at the Curragh last month, the Aidan O’Brien-trained two-year-old filly was well on top at the finish once again, beating the progressive Comhra (Vocalised) by one and a quarter lengths with a further neck back to It’s Showtime Baby (Showcasing) in third. A €360,000 yearling purchase for Coolmore, Meditate is the fourth foal out of the winning Dalakhani (Darshaan) mare Pembina, herself a half-sister to Group 3 winners Johnny Barnes (Acclamation) and Albisola (Montjeu), and is a half-sister to winner Mythological (Galileo). No Nay Never stands at Coolmore for €125,000 (approx. AU$187,500).
Oasis Dream – Last Crusader (3 c ex Spanish Fly by Iffraaj) made all the running on his way to the victory in the Westow Stakes (Listed, 5f) at York, which provided Oasis Dream (Green Desert) with his 130th individual stakes winner. The Karl Burke-trained three-year-old was winning for the second time in seven starts as he beat Guilded (Mastercraftsman) by two and a quarter lengths. Get Ahead (Showcasing) finished third, another half a length away. A 150,000gns purchase as a yearling, Last Crusader is the first foal out of the Group-placed winning mare Spanish Fly (Iffraaj). Oasis Dream stands at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud for £20,000 (approx. AU$35,585).
Pariah – Arrowfield Stud’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) landed a maiden first-crop stakes winner as Swiss Exile (2 c ex Swiss Francs by Swiss Ace) won the Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm. The Annabel Neasham-trained colt scored by half a length over Exo Lady (Exosphere), with a further two and a quarter lengths back to Thelwell (Bel Esprit) in third. A $95,000 buy for her trainer and Brian McGuire from the Baramul Stud draft at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale last year, Swiss Exile is the second named foal and second winner out of the placed Swiss Ace (Secret Savings) mare Swiss Francs. Pariah will stand the 2022 season at Arrowfield for a fee of $16,500 (inc GST).
Power – Oaklands Stud resident Power (Oasis Dream) sired his 23rd individual stakes winner when Ponntos (4 c ex Blessing Box by Bahamian Bounty) made all the running to get the better of his more fancied rivals in the Prix de Saint-Georges (Gr 3, 1000m) at Longchamp. Trained in the Czech Republic by Miroslav Nieslanik, Ponntos was winning for the fourth time in 14 starts as he beat Berneuil (Lope De Vega) by two and a half lengths with favourite Suesa (Night Of Thunder) a nose further behind in third. Power stands for a fee of $13,200 (inc GST).
Sea The Stars – The Aga Khan Stud’s stallion Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) completed a stakes double, starting with Emily Upjohn (3 f ex Hidden Brief by Barathea) who provided the stallion with an 89th individual stakes winner when she posted an impressive victory in the Musidora Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2.5f) at York. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the three-year-old was far too good for her rivals, pulling five and a half lengths clear of the Godolphin-bred Life Of Dreams (Dubawi) in second with Ching Shih (Lope De Vega) a further two lengths back in third. The filly is the sixth foal out of the winning Barathea (Sadler’s Wells) mare Hidden Brief, herself a half-sister to Group 3 winner Hazariya (Xaar), the dam of Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Harzand (Sea The Stars). Emily Upjohn is a half-sister to Warwick Farm Mushaireb (Invincible Spirit) and all-weather winner Inshaa (Dansili). The stallion’s 90th individual stakes winner came when the Charlie Appleby-trained Ottoman Fleet (3 g ex Innevera by Motivator) put up a battling performance to win the Fairway Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) on just his second career outing. The three-year-old gelding showed good determination when asked to pull a half-length clear of the equally tough Zain Sarinda (Churchill) in the closing stages, with a further one and a quarter lengths back to Savvy Victory (New Bay) in third. Ottoman Fleet is the first foal out of the winning Motivator (Montjeu) mare Innevera, herself closely related to French winner Kissavos (Montjeu) and a half-sister to Group 1 winner Keltos (Kendor), Group 2 winners Krataios (Sabrehill) and Loxias (Saumarez) and Group 3 winner Kavafi (Zafonic). Sea The Stars stands at Gilltown Stud for €150,000 (approx. AU$225,000).
Sebring – The Bjorn Baker-trained Bring The Ransom (5 m ex Gold Epona by Stratum) caused an upset in the Dark Jewel Classic (Gr 3, 1400m) at Scone when she won at odds of $51 to provide the late Widden Stud stallion Sebring (More Than Ready) with a 76th individual stakes winner. She beat Wandabaa (Wandjina) by a length with a further three-quarters of a length back to Never Talk (No Nay Never) in third. Bring The Ransom is the lone winner from two to race from the stakes-placed Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) mare Gold Epona, a granddaughter of the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Shizu (Manntari).
Shamardal – The Charlie Appleby-trained Modern News (4 g ex Modern Ideals by New Approach) provided Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) with a 161st individual stakes winner when scoring impressively in the Royal Windsor Stakes (Listed, 1m). Making the step back up to stakes company after winning a Newbury handicap carrying top weight, the four-year-old Godolphin-bred gelding beat Tempus (Kingman) by four and a quarter lengths with a further four lengths back to Bell Rock (Kingman) in third. Modern News is a brother to winner Feminism and is the third foal out of the New Approach (Galileo) mare Modern Ideals, herself a sister to winner Symbolic Star and half-sister to Group 1 winner Ultra (Manduro), Group 3 winner Synopsis (In The Wings) and Listed-placed winner Epic Similie (Lomitas).
Zoustar – Twin Stars (2 c ex Pearl Star by Star Witness) provided Zoustar (Northern Meteor) with a 28th individual stakes success when landing the South Australian Sires’ Produce (Gr 3, 1400m) at Morphettville. Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, the two-year-old colt came home in front by just under half a length over Hope At Hand (Impending) with just over a quarter of a length back to Miss Dunsford (Dissident) in third. A $225,000 purchase at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Twin Stars is out of the Listed-winning Star Witness (Starcraft) mare Pearl Star and is a half-brother to the three-time winner Cumberbatch (I Am Invincible). Widden Stud’s Zoustar will stand the 2022 season for a fee of $198,000 (inc GST).
