Dubawi filly from a famous family takes a dramatic trip to 725,000gns Book 2 transaction

A filly by Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) led the way during the opening stages of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale after Godolphin parted with 725,000gns (approx. AU$1,456,600) to secure the Lodge Park Stud-consigned youngster.

The filly was originally bound for Book 1 of the auction last week, but after a lastminute setback, she missed the opportunity to go through the ring.

Yesterday’s wildcard offering had been set to travel from County Kilkenny to Newmarket during the week of the Goffs Orby Sale, but the arrival of Storm Agnes meant her journey was brought forward 24 hours, only for things to go awry once she was on the move.

Explaining the circumstances behind the filly’s appearance at Park Paddocks a few days late, Lodge Park’s Damian Burns said: “She got on to the lorry and she was doing just a little bit of jumping around, nothing that a normal yearling wouldn’t do, and our best guess – we have the video from the next door stall – is that the head collar got caught on something and when she released herself, she cut her jaw.

“She was literally just out of the yard, but had a laceration so she went back to her stable. She was fine and eating up, but she went down to Fethard as a precaution and they stitched her up. Everything was fine and when she was at home she was out in her paddock and we had her walking up and down.”

With the filly none the worse for her encounter, the Lodge Park team began to formulate a plan B Burns continued: “The Friday evening before Book 1 we got in touch with our transporters and Tattersalls to say this filly might be okay and set the wheels in motion to sell this week.

“We had to keep her at home an extra few days, so many thanks to the guys at home because we were here with our Book 1 yearlings. She got here Wednesday morning and we were showing her on Wednesday afternoon. Our option was waiting for the December Sale, and that was our thought at the time, or putting a saddle on her, everything was discussed. But usually with our young mares we like to sell the stock and let them pay their way, so many thanks to Tatts for taking her.”

The filly is the second foal out of Park Bloom, a winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) sister to 2012 English Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) heroine Was, Curragh Cup (Gr 2, 1m 6f) scorer Amhran Na Bhfiann and the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial (Gr 3, 1m 2f) winner Douglas Macarthur.

The family is no stranger to success in the Park Paddocks ring as another sibling, the winning and Group 3-placed Al Naamah, holds the Book 1 record having been bought by Al Shaqab for 5,000,000gns in 2013. In making 725,000gns, yesterday’s Dubawi filly became the joint-sixth most expensive lot sold at Book 2.

“She’s quite a typical Dubawi but probably has a bit more action than some, which I’d say she gets from her dam line,” added Burns. “And she vetted very well – the family tends to vet very well, those hidden genetics that you don’t see. It’s been very good to us. We had a Night Of Thunder colt last week from the family who made 400,000gns [to Oliver St Lawrence]. My brother Jamie prepped her so many thanks to him and the guys at home.”

After a busy week last week, Anthony Stroud, who was once again bidding on behalf of Godolphin, was back at Park Paddocks yesterday and he said he was pleased to have been able to secure her.

“She’s a very nice filly out of a Galileo mare. She moved very well and has a good outlook. She’s by Dubawi, who’s an unbelievable stallion. She’s bred on a good cross and comes from a very good farm, so we’re very lucky to receive her. She compares very favourably with the stock on offer at Book 1, she’s a lovely filly. She’s very classy,” he said.

“They did very well to get her here this week, there’s a scar under her jaw but the vets have clearly done a very good job. She’s behaved incredibly well, especially considering what she’s been through.”

The Dubawi/Galileo cross has proved its potency in the past, with the nick represented by 66 winners from 95 runners, 12 of them stakes scorers and they are headed by three Group 1 winners: Ghaiyyath, Night Of Thunder and Henry Longfellow.

Progeny of Too Darn Hot continue to please
The progeny of Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) were making waves at Book 1 and the stallion’s popularity continued apace yesterday when a colt by the Darley shuttler was bought by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock for 350,000gns (approx. AU$703,580).

The son of Dubawi, who is currently serving his fourth book of mares at Darley’s Kelvinside base, finished last week with strong numbers. The hammer came down on 13 yearlings, who collectively made 2,487,000gns (approx. AU$4,999,480).

The top-selling yearling by the young stallion yesterday was a colt out of Group 3 scorer Precious Ramotswe (Nathaniel), the dam of one winner to date.

The mare herself is a daughter of the Listed winner Miss Pinkerton (Danehill) and is a granddaughter of Rebecca Sharp (Machiavellian), winner of the Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m), who was also placed second in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m).

The popularity of Too Darn Hot’s yearlings is a result of the stallion’s exceptional start at stud. With his first northern hemisphere runners this year, the stallion has produced 22 winners from 54 runners and they are headed by four stakes scorers, including Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) winner Fallen Angel. The Darley stallion will be represented by his first runners in the southern hemisphere this season.

Najd Stud swoops for colt by Pinatubo
Pinatubo (Shamardal), another Darley stallion who shuttles to Australia, also followed up last week’s good statistics with another pleasing result yesterday when Najd Stud secured a colt by the sire for 300,000gns (approx. AU$603,000).

Offered by Cheveley Park Stud, the colt is out of the unraced Regal Splendour (Pivotal), who is also the dam of the Zetland Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f) runner-up Recovery Run (Nathaniel).

Regal Splendour herself is a daughter of the dual Group 3 winner Regal Realm (Medicean) and she is also the dam of multiple Group 3 winner Regal Reality (Intello).

Pinatubo’s first-crop of northern hemisphere yearlings were well received during Book 1 last week, with eight selling for an aggregate of 2,015,000gns (approx. AU$4,050,600). The son of Shamardal covered his first book of mares at Darley’s Kelvinside base in 2022 and he is standing his second season at the New South Wales-based stud at an unchanged fee of $55,000 (inc GST).
