Dom Sutton looks to have unearthed a potentially useful horse early in his training career in the shape of Feroce (Super Seth).
Sent off the $3.80 favourite for his debut, the youngster clearly knew what was required of him as he pulled clear in the closing stages of a 1200-metre maiden plate at Pakenham on Thursday to comfortably beat fellow newcomer Bisdee (Grunt) by 2.3 lengths. Chainsaw (Capitalist), another making his competitive debut, was a further 2.7 lengths away in third.
“You never know what might happen with horses, but we thought we were coming here with a nice horse on our hands and it is nice to see him get the job and he looked like he had a bit in reserve,” said Sutton after sending out his first winner as a trainer.
“All credit to the horse, he knuckled down and put it to bed pretty easily.
“I think we are only scratching the surface with this horse. He looks like he is going to be more of a three-year-old / middle-type.
“I don’t think we will be giving him too taxing preparation, maybe have one or more starts and then put him away and look towards some nice three-year-old races with him.
“We wanted to come here today and mainly give the horse a nice experience, that’s what it’s all about. We will see how he pulls up and if he comes through this well, we will look for a nice race in town for him.”
Purchased by McKeever Bloodstock from the Kilgravin Lodge draft for NZ$160,000 at last year’s New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale, Feroce is out of the unraced O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare, Corinthia, making him a half-brother to stakes winner Siracusa (Sebring).
Siracusa herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner De Beers (Quest For Fame), while further back this is the same family as Tristalove (Sir Tristram).
Waikato Stud’s first-season sire Super Seth has three colts catalogued at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, which gets underway in Sydney on April 7.
