Deep Field (Northern Meteor) filly Field Of Praise caught the eye this week, when she scored a convincing win on debut at Cranbourne on Wednesday.

The Ben and JD Hayes-trained juvenile showed a dynamite turn of foot to sail home from near last in the nine-runner field and take victory by a comfortable length and a half margin.

Ridden by Blaike McDougall, Field Of Praise was sent off a well-backed $9 chance and glided through the Heavy 9 track to defeat Churchill (Galileo) filly Tanto, while Corner Off (Toronado) finished third, two and a quarter lengths from the winner.

There is a lot of water in the track, and it’s quite heavy, but she got through the conditions,” McDougall told Racing.com.

“She began only fair, so I gave her a chance to relax behind them, gave her plenty of room in the straight, and she got the job done.

“She’s a naturally athletic horse; there’s not a lot of her, but she has a turn of foot, and it was a good effort.”

Field Of Praise was a $60,000 pinhook buy from the Lauriston Stud draft as a weanling, before being onsold as a yearling for $180,000 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, where she was bought by Lindsay Park.

She is one of 12 individual two-year-old winners for her Newgate sire Deep Field this season, with the stallion’s standout juvenile being Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) runner-up Sweet Ride.

Field Of Praise is the first foal out of the two-time winner Odelia, herself a half-sister to the stakes placed Platinum Angel (Snitzel). There is just one stakes winner within the first four dam’s of the filly’s pedigree, that being the Group 1 winner-turned-stallion Hellbent (I Am Invincible).

Odelia’s yearling filly by Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) was bought for $85,000 by Finnis Lodge from the Lauriston Thoroughbreds draft at this year’s Inglis Premier sale. She was put in foal to Toronado (High Chaparral) in the spring, having missed the year prior.
