New first season sire winners
Capitalist
Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon) brought up his first winner on Saturday when Captivant (2 c ex Speedboat by Commands) took out the Victory Vein Plate (1000m) at Randwick in impressive fashion. Sent out as an $8 chance, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Captivant raced midfield, sluicing between runners before racing clear for a length and three-quarter success. It was a first season sire quinella as Akihiro (Maurice) finished second, with She’s All Class (I Am Invincible) – sporting the colours of last year’s Everest (1200m) winner Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) – a further long head away in third. Bred by Senga Bissett of Ashleigh Thoroughbreds, Captivant sold to a consortium featuring China Horse Club, Newgate Bloodstock and Starlight Racing for $550,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Captivant is the third foal, the second to race, out of Speedboat (Commands), closely related to Group 2 winner First Command (Commands), from the family of Group 1 winners River Dove (Hurricane Sky), Headwater (Exceed And Excel) and Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia d’Oro). Capitalist stands for $44,000 (inc GST) at Newgate Farm in 2020.

The Brad Cox-trained juvenile, who had finished third at Churchill Downs on his debut last month, beat Tiwanaku (Tapit) with Mazzini (Tiznow) another two and a half lengths away in third. The homebred is the eighth foal out of the UAE 1,000 Guineas (Listed, 1600m) and UAE Oaks (Listed, 1800m) winner Folk (Quiet American). Frosted stands for $22,000 (inc GST) at Darley’s Northwood Park in 2020.
Odyssey Moon
Twin Hills Stud’s first season sire Odyssey Moon (Snitzel) has sired his first winner with his first runner after the Chris Munce-trained Berdini’s Girl (2 f ex Berdini by Bernardini) won at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday. Ridden by Micheal Hellyer, Berdini’s Girl finished strongly from off the pace to score by a long neck over Vienna Empress (Holy Roman Emperor) and Rhapsody Rose (Star Witness) who was another three quarters of a length away in third place in the QTIS 2YO Handicap (1000m). Bred by Woodpark Stud, the Sledmere Stud-consigned Berdini’s Girl made $35,000 at this year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale when selected by Munce and agent Arthur Hoyeau. Odyssey Moon, who stands for a fee of $6,600 (inc GST) at Olly and Amber Tait’s Cootamundra Stud, continues a good start for freshman season sires, with Capitalist (Written Tycoon), Shalaa (Invincible Spirit), Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) and Frosted (Tapit) all siring two-year-old winners this season.
Shalaa
Arrowfield Stud shuttler Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) sired individual winners 16 and 17 this week. The Andrew Balding-trained Skibo Castle (2 c ex Noelani by Indian Ridge) got off the mark at the third attempt on Monday to bring up Shalaa’s (Invincible Spirit) 16th individual winner. Skibo Castle was unplaced in his first two starts but capitalised on a four-runner field to land a novice contest over six furlongs at Windsor, beating the short-priced favourite Pure Dreamer (Oasis Dream) by a short head. A €130,000 purchase by Alex Cole at Arqana last year, Skibo Castle is the eighth foal out of Noelani (Indian Ridge), who herself is a sister to Prix de l’Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Namid. Noman (2 c ex Mathool by Alhaarth) brought up a 17th individual winner for the first season sire Shalaa by landing a novice stakes (1m1⁄2f) on the all-weather at Wolverhampton on Saturday evening. The Hugo Palmer-trained colt finished third on his first appearance at Newmarket over a mile in September but made no mistake second time out. Noman won going away from the Richard Hannon-trained Mickydee (Twilight Son), who finished one and three-quarter lengths off the winner, with Folk Magic (Dubawi) finishing a further one and a quarter lengths behind in third. Shalaa, who had his first Group winner when Shaquero (2 c ex Fimatino by Not A Single Doubt) took out the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick on October 3, stands at Arrowfield for $33,000 (Inc. New Group or Grade 1 winners
Dubawi
Last year’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) second The Revenant (5 g ex Hazel Lavery by Excellent Art) made no mistake this time as he ground down the front-running Roseman (Kingman) under Pierre-Charles Boudot to earn Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) his 44th individual elite-level winner. The Francis-Henri Graffard-trained five-year-old was always travelling best and he had the tenacity to hold off Roseman, who had dictated matters from the front, by a head. Dubawi stood at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £250,000 (approx. AUD$456,000) in 2020.
Pivotal
Hollie Doyle’s sensational season hit a new high on Saturday as she rode the first Group 1 winner of her career on Glen Shiel (6 g ex Gonfilia by Big Shuffle) in the British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Ascot, who in turn recorded a 32nd individual elite-level winner for his sire Pivotal (Polar Falcon). Trained by Archie Watson, who was also enjoying a first Group 1, Glen Shiel flew out of the stalls to lead, and just held off the late thrust of veteran Brando (Pivotal) by a nose, with One Master (Fastnet Rock) a further half a length behind in third. Pivotal stood at Cheveley Park Stud for a private fee in 2020.

Mid-stretch, it looked as though Princess Grace (Karakontie) was home and hosed, but the Mike Maker-trained Stunning Sky stormed home to score by a half-length, bringing up her first stakes win in the process. Chica Fuerte won courtesy of a smart front-running ride from Ben Melham, who dictated the pace and had enough underneath him to hold off $19 chance Salto Angel (Sacred Falls) by one and three-quarter lengths, with fellow outsider Star Of Eden (Wandjina) finishing two lengths off the winner. Hinchinbrook stood at Yarraman Park Stud before dying at the age of ten following an accident on a walking machine in 2018.

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained gelding was making just his third start, having won his maiden on debut, and was sent off the $3.60 favourite under Jye McNeil. Endanger appeared to do the minimum required to defeat the Chris Waller-trained Osamu (Exceed And Excel) by half a length, with So Let’s Toast (So You Think) a further length behind in third. Medaglia d’Oro stood at Darley America for a fee of $200,000 (approx. AUD$282,650) in 2020.

The Kerry Parker-trained galloper has been consistent this campaign with two seconds and one third at Randwick and fully deserved his victory under a dominant ride from Glen Boss. The $15 chance pounced to lead close home and was too strong for his rivals, with Nettoyer (Sebring) a length and a quarter behind in second and Vanna Girl (Husson) close behind in third. The well-fancied Chris Waller-trained favourite Star Of The Seas (Ocean Park) failed to see out the trip and finished ninth of ten. So You Think stands at Coolmore for a fee of $38,500 in 2020.
