Embellish (pictured above) – Debutante Luberon (Embellish) gave her sire the perfect start of a winner with his first runner when leading all the way to score over 800-metres at Ruakaka. Luberon is bred and raced by Cambridge Stud owners Brendan and Jo Lindsay where the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner commenced stud duties in 2019. A stylish trial winner over 800-metres at Cambridge earlier in the month, the Lance Noble-trained Luberon dashed clear in the home straight, going on to score by four lengths.
Sioux Nation – Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy) sired his 35th individual winner when Mymovies (2 f ex Tonkolili by Kodiac) ended a frustrating run of seconds with a breakthrough success over 1000 metres at Rome. Trained by Sebastiano Guerrieri, the filly beat Special Mission (Lohit) by a length and a half with Calasabina (Kodi Bear) another half a length away in third. The Michael Grassick-trained Small Oasis (2 f ex Collegiate by Declaration Of War) showed the benefit of her debut third placing when coming home an easy winner of a six-furlong maiden at the Curragh. The filly sprinted four and three-quarter lengths clear of the second-placed Ardad’s Great (Ardad) with a further half-length back to Desert Haven (Oasis Dream) in third. Small Oasis is the first foal out of the Declaration Of War (War Front) mare Collegiate, herself a half-sister to winners Prefontaine (Mastercraftsman), Multicultural (Fastnet Rock), Yulong Pearlisland (Fastnet Rock) and Lindwall (Australia). Sioux Nation made it three for the week when She’s Hot (2 f ex Timely Words by Galileo) got off the mark at the fifth attempt, scoring a determined success in a seven-and-a-half furlong maiden at Ffos Las. The Paul and Oliver Cole-trained filly provided Sioux Nation with a 37th individual winner, battling well to fend off the persistent challenge of Al Shami (Awtaad) to win by one and a quarter lengths at the line. House Of Dragons (Washington DC) was a further six and a half lengths behind the front pair in third. A half-sister to winners Numero Dix (Territories) and Reassurance (Champs Elysees), She’s Hot is out of the unraced Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Timely Words, herself closely related to Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Rekindling (High Chaparral) and Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) runner-up Golden Sword (High Chaparral). Sioux Nation, who has now had 76 individual starters, shuttled to Swettenham Stud for one season. He stood for a fee of €10,000 (approx. AU$14,840) at Castlehyde Stud in Ireland during the 2022 northern hemisphere breeding season.
Zoustar – Couplet (2 f ex Arabda by Elnadim) became the tenth individual winner from the first northern hemisphere crop of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) when she made a successful debut in a fillies’ maiden over six furlongs at Haydock. Trained by David Eustace’s brother Harry, the filly beat Pure Angel (Ardad) by two and a quarter lengths, with Belinda Bell (Roaring Lion) another head away in third. A €75,000 buy from the Arqana August Yearling Sale, Couplet is the second foal out of Swedish Listed-winner Arabda (Elnadim). Not Even Close (2 f ex Street Marie by Street Cry) provided Zoustar with his 11th individual winner in the northern hemisphere when recording a narrow debut success in a seven-furlong maiden at Dundalk on Friday. The Donnacha O’Brien-trained filly kept on strongly to beat favourite Perseids (More Than Ready) by a neck with the same distance further back to Starry Eyed (Galileo) in third. Not Even Close is the second foal out of the placed Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Street Marie, herself a half-sister to winner Rezia (Oasis Dream) out of a close relative of Group 1 winner Saddex (Sadler’s Wells). Zoustar shuttled to Tweenhills for the 2022 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £25,000 (approx. AU$41,580). He stands at Widden for a fee of $198,000 (inc GST).
New Group / Grade 1 winners
Gun Runner – Society (3 f ex Etiquette by Tapit) provided Gun Runner (Candy Ride) with a sixth individual elite-level winner when running out a comfortable winner of the Cotillion Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Parx on Saturday. The Steve Asmussen-trained three-year-old filly ran on well to beat Morning Matcha (Central Banker) by five and three-quarter lengths at the line with Secret Oath (Arrogate) a further two lengths back in third. A half-sister to winner Broadway (Quality Road), Society is the second foal out of the winning Tapit (Pulpit) mare Etiquette, herself a half-sister to Grade 3-winner Pleasant Prince (Indy King). Gun Runner, who has now had 126 individual starters stood the 2022 northern hemisphere breeding season at Three Chimneys Farm for US$125,000 (approx. AU$191,480).
Rubick – Swettenham Stud stallion Rubick (Encosta De Lago) sired his first Group 1 winner when Jacquinot (3 c ex Ponterro by Pierro) won the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained colt came from the clouds to defeat favourite In Secret (I Am Invincible) in the final strides, with Zou Tiger (Zoustar) finishing a length and a half adrift in third. Bred by Lindsay Maxsted, Jacquinot was passed in when failing to reach his $120,000 reserve at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is the first foal from the unraced mare Ponterro, whose sire Pierro (Lonhro) landed his first Group 1 winner as a broodmare sire with Jacquinot’s victory. Ponterro, herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Inference (So You Think) and the Listed-winning Price and Kent Jnr-trained Illation (So You Think), as well as a sister to Group 2 winner Dragon Leap, last year produced a colt by Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) and is due to foal to Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) this season. Rubick, who has had 320 runners, stands for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST) this season.
Written Tycoon – Coolangatta (3 f ex Piping Hot by More Than Ready) returned in scintillating form to win the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley and become the 12th individual Group 1 winner for Yulong’s champion sire Written Tycoon (Iglesia). Coolangatta led from start to finish to defeat her Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained stablemate Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) by a neck with the Tony Gollan-trained Zoustyle (Zoustar) a length and a quarter further back in third. A $280,000 buy for Maher from the Milburn Creek draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Coolangatta is out of two-year-old-winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Piping Hot, herself a daughter of Moonee Valley Oaks (Gr 2, 2040m) winner Ribe (Danehill) and half-sister to Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) scorer Reaan (Hussonet). Written Tycoon, who has had 993 runners, will stand for a fee of $165,000 (inc GST).
Zoustar – Zoustar (Northern Meteor) sired his fourth individual Group 1 winner, and first in the northern hemisphere, when Lezoo (2 f ex Roger Sez by Red Clubs) won the Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket. The Ralph Beckett-trained filly built upon her win in the Princess Margaret Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Ascot to defeat Meditate (No Nay Never) by three-quarters of a length. Mawj (Exceed And Excel) finished the same distance further back in third. A €110,000 purchase for Marc Chan and Andrew Rosen, Lezoo is the fifth foal out of the Group 3-winning Red Clubs (Red Ransom) mare Roger Sez and is a half-sister to winners Daltrey (Iffraaj), Papa Bear (Kodiac) and Brogan (Pivotal).
New stakes winners
Acclamation – Beauty Crescent (2 g ex Up In Time by Noverre) became the 65th individual stakes winner for Rathbarry Stud resident Acclamation (Royal Applause), when running out a comfortable winner of the Blenheim Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Fairyhouse. Trained by Ger Lyons, the gelding was winning for the second time in four starts as he beat Ocean Jewel (Sioux Nation) by two and a quarter lengths. UK raider Lady Bullet (James Garfield) was another length and a half away in third. An €180,000 buy out of the Goffs Orby Sale, Beauty Crescent is the fourth foal out of US Grade 2-winner Up In Time (Noverre). Acclamation, who has now had 1286 individual starters,stood the 2022 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €27,500 (approx. AU$40,950).
Areion – Fire Of The Sun (3 c ex Morera by Echo Of Light) provided Areion (Big Shuffle) with a 49th individual stakes winner when winning the Grosser Preis der Landeshauptstadt Dresden (Gr 3, 1400m). The Peter Schiergen-trained three-year-old ran on well to beat Namos (Medicean) by one and a half lengths with a further one and three-quarter lengths back to Rubaiyat (Areion) in third. Fire Of The Sun is the first foal out of the winning Echo Of Light (Dubai Millennium) mare Morera, herself a half-sister to Group 3 winner Saratoga Black (Pyrus) and Listed winner Warder (Ivan Denisovich). Areion has now had 451 individual starters.
Camelot – Camelot (Montjeu) edged one step closer to a half century of individual stakes winners when Saracen Knight (7 g ex Za’hara by Raven’s Pass) won the RM Ansett Classic (Listed, 2400m) at Mornington. The Danny O’Brien-trained import won by two and three-quarter lengths ahead of Verimli (Born To Sea) and Harmysian (Lope De Vega), who was six and a half lengths from the winner in third. A €230,000 yearling, Saracen Knight won twice for Aidan O’Brien in Ireland before his export to Australia. He is the first foal out of Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality) mare Za’hara, herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Debussy (Diesis). Camelot, who has now had 615 individual starters stands at Coolmore for a fee of €75,000 (approx. AU$111,135).
Capitalist – Economics (3 c ex Anabaa’s Legacy by Anabaa) profited from a depleted Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) field to win the Listed contest at Rosehill. The race incurred seven scratchings, leaving just six runners to go to post. The Annabel Neasham-trained Economics defeated Opal Ridge (Rubick) by a length and three-quarters, with Hawaii Five Oh (I Am Invincible) third, three lengths from the winner. The son of Capitalist (Written Tycoon) was a $260,000 buy for Tony Fung Investments from the Lustre Lodge draft at last year’s Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, the sixth highest-priced yearling of the sale. Out of the stakes-placed Anabaa (Danzig) mare Anabaa’s Legacy, Economics is a half-brother to the stakes-placed winner Wolf Moon (Wandjina) and from the family of dual Group 1 winner Ball Park (Ahonoora). Bred by Rick Jamieson, Anabaa’s Legacy was most recently purchased by Australian Bloodstock for $75,000 when carrying to Capitalist at the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. She has since foaled colts to So You Think (High Chaparral) and Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) and this season is due to foal to Hellbent (I Am Invincible). The win provided Newgate stallion Capitalist with a ninth individual stakes winner from 201 starters. He stands the 2022 season for a fee of $99,000 (inc GST).
Churchill – The Royal Lodge Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Newmarket proved to be an upset when The Foxes (2 c ex Tanaghum by Darshaan) came home a half-length winner of the Group 2 contest for owners King Power Racing. The Andrew Balding-trained juvenile colt stayed on strongly in the closing stages to beat Dubai Mile (Roaring Lion) with a further short-head back to odds-on favourite Flying Honours (Sea The Stars) in third. The Aidan O’Brien-trained Greenland (Saxon Warrior) finished last of the four-runner field but was beaten just one and a quarter lengths by the winner in a bunched finish. A 440,000gns purchase as a yearling by his owners, The Foxes is the 13th foal out of the winning Darshaan (Shirley Heights) mare Tanaghum and is a brother to Listed winner Perotan, closely related to two winners including Group 2 winner Bangkok (Australia) and a half-brother to seven winners including Grade 1 winner Matterhorn (Raven’s Pass). The win provided Coolmore shuttler Churchill (Galileo), who has now had 181 individual starters, with an eighth individual stakes winner. He stands in Australia for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).
Deep Impact – Justin Palace (3 c ex Palace Rumor by Royal Anthem) provided Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) with a 190th individual stakes winner when running out a comfortable winner of the Kobe Shimbun Hai (Gr 2, 2200m) at Chukyo. The Haruki Sugiyama-trained three-year-old colt ran on strongly to beat Yamanin Zest (Symboli Kris S) by three and a half lengths, with a further half-length back to Boldog Hos (Screen Hero) in third. The tenth foal out of the stakes-winning Royal Anthem (Theatrical) mare Palace Rumor, Justin Palace is closely related to winner Danon Greater (Heart’s Cry) and a half-sister to Grade 1-winner Palace Malice (Curlin) and winner Iron Barows (Orfevre). Deep Impact has now had 1706 individual starters.
Excelebration – Excelebration (Exceed And Excel) earned a 13th individual stakes winner when Grove Ferry (5 g ex Rebelline by Robellino) won the Colin Stephen Quality (Gr 3, 2400m) at Rosehill. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained import won by a neck from Cadre Du Noir (War Front) and Herman Hesse (Frankel), who was a half-length further back in third. Grove Ferry was a £30,000 buy for Andrew Balding from the Goffs Premier Yearling Sale. The gelding earned four victories and finished third at Royal Ascot before moving to the Waterhouse and Bott yard in 2021. Excelebration, who has had 450 runners to date, stands in Morocco.
I Am Invincible – Waltz On By (3 f ex Stay With Me, by Street Cry) provided Yarraman Park stallion I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) with an 82nd individual stakes winner when running out a narrow winner of the Jim Moloney Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Sandown-Hillside. The three-year-old filly beat Jenny Jerome (Churchill) by a short-head with the same distance further back to Hell Hath No Fury (Hellbent) in third. Waltz on By is the second foal and second winner out of the Street Cry mare Stay With Me, the best of six winners to come out of Arrowfield Stud’s Champion 2YO and 3YO filly Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice). Arrowfield sold a Dundeel (High Chaparral) filly out of Stay With Me to Hawkes Racing for $1.7 million at Inglis Easter this year and she has a yearling colt by the same sire. Stay With Me is now back in foal to Waltz On By’s sire I Am Invincible. I Am Invincible, who has had 940 starters, stands for a fee of $247,500 (inc GST).
Invincible Spirit – The highly tried Mutasaabeq (4 c ex Ghanaati by Giant’s Causeway) became the 143rd individual stakes winner for Invincible Spirit (Green Desert), courtesy of a victory in the Joel Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Newmarket. The Charlie Hills-trained colt, who finished in mid-division in last season’s English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) was winning for the fifth time in 12 starts as he beat El Drama (Lope De Vega) by three-quarters of a length. Favourite Tempus (Kingman) finished another three-quarters of a length away in third. Raced and bred by Shadwell, Mutasaabeq is one of six winning foals from as many to race out of the English 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Ghanaati (Giant’s Causeway). Invincible Spirit, who has now had 1800 individual starters, stood the 2022 northern hemisphere breeding season at the Irish National Stud for a fee of €60,000 (approx. AU$89,065).
Kendargent – Kendargent (Kendor) sired his 35th individual stakes winner when Strako (2 c ex Stracy by Motivator) struck in the Criterium de Lyon (Listed, 1600m). Now the winner of two of his five starts, Strako beat Belouni (Fast Company) by a length and a half with For Victory (Mehmas) a neck further behind in third. Bred by his owner Guy Pariente, Strako is the first foal out of the unraced Motivator (Montjeu) mare Stracy. Kendargent, who has now had 650 individual starters, stood the 2022 northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras de Colleville for a fee of €17,000 (approx. AU$25,235).
Kingman – Nostrum (2 c ex Mirror Lake by Dubai Destination) provided Juddmonte Farms stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit) with a 51st individual stakes winner when maintaining his unbeaten record in the Tattersalls Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Newmarket. The colt was a rare juvenile debut winner from the Sir Michael Stoute yard when powering three lengths clear in a Sandown maiden and built upon that effort to beat Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f) winner and Vintage Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) runner-up Holloway Boy (Ulysses) by one and a quarter lengths. Favourite Victory Dance (Dubawi) was a further three lengths adrift in third. The seventh foal out of the Listed-winning Dubai Destination (Kingmambo) mare Mirror Lake, Nostrum is a half-brother to six winners including Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) winner Imaging (Oasis Dream) and Heatherlie Stakes (Listed, 1700m) winner Super Titus (Dansili). Commissioning ( 2f ex Sovereign Parade by Galileo) became the 52nd individual stakes winner for Kingman (when she followed up her impressive debut success with a sparkling victory in the Rockfel Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Newmarket. Trained in partnership by John and Thady Gosden, the filly was given quotes of 6-1 for next year’s English 1,000 Guineas after she beat Electric Eyes (Siyouni) by two and three-quarter lengths. Rage Of Bamby (Saxon Warrior) finished third, another length and a quarter away. Bred by her owners Abdulla Al-Khalifa and Isa Salman, Commissioning is the second foal out of the winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Sovereign Parade who herself is a sister to, among others, Irish Derby (Gr 1 1m 4f) and St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f) winner Capri. Kingman, who has now had 443 individual starters, stood the 2022 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £150,000 (approx. AU$250,845).
Kitasan Black – Gaia Force (3 c ex Natale by Kurofune) provided Kitasan Black (Black Tide) with a second individual stakes winner when running out a narrow winner of the Asahi Hai St Lite Kinen (Gr 2, 2200m) at Nakayama. The Haruki Sugiyama-trained three-year-old colt beat favourite Ask Victor More (Deep Impact) by a neck with a further three lengths back to Rousham Park (Harbinger) in third. Out of the winning Kurofune (French Deputy) mare Natale, Gaia Force is a half-brother to winners Vigilia (King Kamehameha), Navidad (Fenomeno) and Naviglio (Just A Way). Maurice – The Takashi Saito-trained Geraldina (4 f ex Gentildonna by Deep Impact) caused an upset in the Sankei Sho All Comers (Gr 2, 2200m) at Nakayama, providing her sire Maurice (Screen Hero) with a tenth individual stakes winner. The four-year-old filly came home a length and a half winner over Robertson Quay (Rulership), with a further one and a quarter lengths back to Win Kiitos (Gold Ship) in third. Russian Cross – Russipant Fal (3 c ex Pantherii by Forest Wildcat) provided his sire Russian Cross (Cape Cross) with a first individual stakes winner when scoring in the Prix du Haras de La Haie Neuve (Listed, 1650m) at Craon. The Joel Boisnard-trained three-year-old colt beat Mon Bel Canto (The Wow Signal) by one and a half lengths, with a further neck back to Nano Nagle (Frankel) in third. Savabeel – I Wish I Win (4 g ex Make A Wish by Pins) provided Waikato Stud stallion Savabeel (Zabeel) with a 126th individual stakes winner when running out a length winner of the Testa Rossa Stakes (Listed, 1300m) at Sandown-Hillside. The Peter Moody-trained four-year-old gelding was sent off as the odds-on favourite, following an impressive return win in a Caulfield handicap last month and beat Ayrton (Iffraaj), with Bandersnatch (Casino Prince) a further head back in third place. Out of the Pins (Snippets) mare Make A Wish, I Wish I Win is a half-brother to Premiers Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) winner Another Dollar (Ocean Park) among others. Sea The Stars – French-bred import Desert Icon (7 g ex Plume Rose by Marchand De Sable) became the 99th individual stakes winner for Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) when winning the JRA Cup (Gr 3, 2040m) at Moonee Valley. The Star Thoroughbreds-owned and Chris Waller-trained Desert Icon won by three and a half lengths from Nerve Not Verve (Shocking) and Persan (Pierro), who finished four lengths from the winner in third. Desert Icon, who won for the third time in Australia, adding to his three European wins, was a 210,000gns buy from the 2020 Tattersalls Autumn Horses-In-Training Sale, having sold for €110,000 at Arqana. Life In Motion (3 f ex Wavering by Refuse To Bend) brought up the ton of individual stakes winners for Epsom Derby (Ge 1, 1m 4f) winner Sea The Stars when landing the Prix Coronation (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. The Andre Fabre-trained three-year-old was winning for the third time in six starts as she beat Ataared (Muhaarar) by three-quarters of a length. Hot Queen (Recorder) finished third, a further two lengths away. Sessions – Oakland Park Stud sire Sessions (Lonhro) sired a second individual stakes winner when Comes A Time (6 g ex Let’s Go by More Than Ready) won the Black Heart Bart Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Belmont. The Michael Grantham-trained gelding won by a length ahead of Cup Night (Maschino) with Money Matters (Canford Cliffs) in third. A homebred for Craig Vincent Fox, Comes A Time is the first stakes winner out of More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Let’s Go, who Fox purchased in 2007 as a two-year-old for $20,000. Sessions, who has had 66 starters, stands for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).
Siyouni – The Chad Brown-trained Love And Thunder (5 m ex Pretty Paper by Medaglia D’Oro) came home a narrow winner of the Athenia Stakes (Gr 3, 9f) at Belmont at the Big A on Saturday. Providing the Aga Khan stallion Siyouni (Pivotal) with a 67th individual stakes winner, the five-year-old mare beat Evvie Jets (Twirling Candy) by a neck, with a further three lengths to Kalifornia Queen (Lope De Vega) in third. A novice winner for her previous trainer John Gosden, Love And Thunder is the first foal out of the unraced Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) mare Pretty Paper, herself a half-sister to Group-placed winner Bookrunner (Tiznow) out of a Grade 3-winning half-sister to five stakes winners including Grade 1-winner Glinda The Good (Hard Spun). Siyouni, who has now had 808 individual starters, stood the 2022 northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras de Bonneval for €140,000 (approx. AU$207,450).
Soldier Hollow – The Charlie and Mark Johnston-trained Sirona (2 f ex Si Luna by Kallisto) made a successful trip to Germany when she won the Winterkonigin Trial (Listed, 1500m) at Cologne, providing her sire Soldier Hollow (In The Wings) with a 59th individual stakes winner. The juvenile filly had merely had to be pushed out by her rider to beat Tamarinde (Amaron) by an easy four lengths. The front two were a further seven lengths ahead of Frozen (The Grey Gatsby) back in third. The second foal out of the Group 3-winning Kallisto (Sternkoenig) mare Si Luna, Sirona is a half-sister to winner Siluto (Ito). Soldier Hollow has now had 488 individual starters.
So You Think – The Ben and JD Hayes-trained Gentleman Roy (6 g ex La La Land, by Last Tycoon) made a successful debut in stakes’ company when winning the Sandown Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m), providing So You Think (High Chaparral) with a 44th individual stakes winner. Ridden by Jye McNeil, the consistent six-year-old stayed on well to beat joint favourites Military Expert (Redoute’s Choice) and Pinstriped (Street Boss) by three-quarters of a length, and a length and three-quarters respectively. Out of the Last Tycoon (Try My Best) mare La La Land, Gentleman Roy is a half-brother to dual Listed-winner Jacquinot Bay (Galileo). La La Land has a two-year-old colt by Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) and was covered by Kooringal Stud’s Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) stallion Sandbar last spring. So You Think, who has had 726 starters, stands at Coolmore for $93,500 (inc GST).
Starspangledbanner – Basil Martini (2 f ex Under Offer by Bated Breath) broke his maiden at the fifth time of asking, and did so on his first try at stakes company, winning the Weld Park Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at the Curragh. Providing Starspangledbanner (Choisir) with a 24th individual stakes winner, the Joseph O’Brien juvenile filly ran on well inside the final furlong to beat Gan Teorainn (Saxon Warrior) by a half-length with a further neck back to Keep In Touch (Tamayuz) in third position. Basil Martini is the first foal out of the placed Bated Breath (Dansili) mare Under Offer, herself a half-sister to Listed-winner Bayargal (Bernstein) and Listed-placed Bulliciosa (Successful Appeal) and Bargouzine (Stravinsky). Starspangledbanner, who has now had 470 individual starters, stood the 2022 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore Stud for €35,000 (approx. AU$51,860).
Style Vendome – Ad Merajj (4 f ex Zalonia by Cape Cross) justified the confidence to step up in class in the Premio Pietro Besserto (Listed, 1600m) at Milan and recorded his fifth career victory and also became the fifth individual stakes winner for his sire Style Vendome (Anabaa). The Gavin Hernon-trained four-year-old was sent off at 20-1 and pounced late to get the better of the favourite Telepatic Glances (Pride Of Dubai) by a neck, while they were a length and a half clear of Deadline (Desert Prince) in third. Ad Merajj is out of the dual French three-year-old winner Zalonia (Cape Cross). The second dam is the German Listed winner Arlecchina (Mtoto), who was also placed in the Premio Sergio Cumani (Gr 3, 1600m), Premio Carlo Chiesa (Gr 3, 1600m) and Preis der Wirtschaft (Gr 3, 1700m). Style Vendome has now had 199 individual starters.
Time Test – Crypto Force (2 c ex Luna Mare by Galileo) provided Time Test (Dubawi) with a sixth individual stakes winner when producing an upset in the Beresford Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at the Curragh. Having finished unplaced in the Chesham Stakes on his previous outing, the Michael O’Callaghan-trained juvenile colt won going away by two and a quarter lengths over odds-on favourite Adelaide River (Australia). Young Ireland (New Approach) finished a further four lengths adrift in third. A £900,000 purchase at Goffs London this year for Amo Racing following his comfortable winning debut, Crypto Force is the first foal out of the winning Galileo mare Luna Mare, herself a sister to winner Era Uma Vez. Time Test, who has now had 96 individual starters, stands at Little Avondale Stud for a fee of $10,000.
Vanbrugh – Mustang Valley (4m Vanbrugh – Cream Of The Crop by New Approach) stepped up to stakes level with a comfortable win in the Metric Mile (Gr 3, 1550m) at Awapuni. Settled towards the rear in the early stages, Mustang Valley accelerated clear in the home straight to defeat Aromatic (Sacred Falls) by two and a quarter lengths. Bred by Windsor Park Stud, Mustang Valley is the second stakes winner for her sire Vanbrugh (Encosta de Lago) who is advertised at $6,000 (plus GST) at Windsor Park Stud for the 2022 breeding season. Vanbrugh has now had 23 individual starters.
Written Tycoon – Jack Bruce earned his first stakes winner as a trainer when Axe (6 g ex Exselva by Exceed And Excel) won the Weetwood Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Toowoomba, providing Yulong stallion Written Tycoon (Iglesia) with a 51st individual stakes winner. Axe denied the Tony Gollan-trained duo Mass Destruction (Spirit Of Boom) and Garibaldi (I Am Invincible) by a neck and the same. Axe, who was a $55,000 buy for Bruce from the Inglis Digital March Late Sale, having sold for $340,000 as a yearling, is out of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Excelva. Written Tycoon, who has now had 993 individual starters, stands for a fee of $165,00 (inc GST).
