The Jason Warren-trained Flyer (Exceedance) entered Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) fray when she registered a debut victory in a 1200-metre maiden at Sandown-Lakeside on Wednesday.
Becoming the third individual winner for Vinery Stud’s first-season sire Exceedance (Exceed And Excel), the filly tracked the early speed under Daniel Stackhouse before squeezing through a narrow gap at the 200-metre marker and racing away to beat Godolphin’s Last Druid (Brazen Beau) by half-a-length.
The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Barbaric Lad (Brutal) finished third, beaten three-quarters of a length by the winner.
Bred and raced by Rosemont Stud and Brett Charman, Flyer was the sole filly in the 11-runner field and Warren revealed the Blue Diamond at Caulfield on February 24 was now firmly on the agenda.
“We ideally wanted to have one run into the main race. She’s done all that she’s had to do,” Warren said.
“She’s improving and the bigger track here today, the chance to balance up, I thought was perfect and well worth waiting for.
“Dan Stackhouse has done a terrific job and really earned his riding fee there. He’s gone where angels fear to tread through a very narrow gap.
“We’ll give her every chance to get to the Diamond, that’s our plan.”
Flyer is the second foal out of four-time winning mare Miss Toorak Flyer (Toorak Toff), making her a half-sister to her stablemate Treasurway (Starspangledbanner), winner of last year’s SAJC Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).
