A tilt at next month’s $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) at Rosehill is on the radar for the blue-blooded filly Gai’s Artist (Snitzel), after the sister to the four-time Group 1 winner Trapeze Artist staged a promising performance in winning on debut at Randwick on Wednesday, albeit by a narrow margin.
Sent off an odd-on favourite off the back of an impressive trial win at Hawkesbury a fortnight earlier, the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained Gai’s Artist tracked the free-running leader Betta Being Single (Better Than Ready) at a quick tempo, challenged that runner at the 300 metres and, despite racing a bit greenly in stages, fought best to grab victory by a half-head in the final strides.
“She’s a nice filly,” Ryan said. “They ran along a bit there in front and they kept it going and she showed a lot of fight. She was a little bit green in the straight, but she will improve off it.
“She will either go to the Golden Gift if she does alright, or she will go to the paddock.”
A homebred for Bert Vierra, Gai’s Artist is not only a sister to Widden’s promising stallion, but also the Group-performed dual winner Master Showman.
Vierra purchased her dam Treppes (Domesday) from the Edinburgh Park draft for $190,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale when she was carrying Trapeze Artist.
Treppes is a half-sister to Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Crawl (Dr Grace) and the multiple Listed winner Old Man (Dr Grace), as well as to Step (Grand Lodge), the dam of Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) winner Marching (Commands).
Her dam Traipse (Bletchingly) is a sister to Goodwood Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Boardwalk Angel, who herself is the dam of Railway Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) scorer Coogee Walk (Success Express)
Treppes has a yearling brother to Trapeze Artist and Gai’s Artist. She slipped to Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) last spring.
