After an encouraging second on debut in the Black Opal Stakes Preview (1000m) at Canberra on February 19, Glistening (Zoustar) announced herself as a bona fide Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) contender with victory in the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Having shown good pace to lead, she travelled well before snatching a break at the 200 metres and then held on gamely to score a narrow but very good win, just seeing off the late challenge of Swift Witness (Star Witness).
Trained by Richard and Michael Freedman, Glistening was sent off a $16 chance and, in claiming a Group 2 win on what was just her second start, she marked the first success of a new fillies’ partnership between the trainers and bloodstock agent James Harron, who secured the filly for $260,000 out of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year.
“James Harron and I have put together a fillies’ partnership and this is the first filly out of that. To have a Group winner out of that is a big thrill,” said co-trainer Michael Freedman post-race.
“It wasn’t probably the plan to lead today. I don’t think she’s one to jump and sit on speed type. It was probably dictated a little bit to us by the barrier today.
“I actually think she’s a better filly sitting off the speed a little bit. We’ll let the dust settle and I guess she’s in the race now, so it certainly gives us some options. James and I will have a chat about it and if she pulls up all right out of it we might have a shot at the stumps.”
Glistening is the second live foal and second winner out of Group 3 winner Beethog (Shovhog). Beethog herself is a half-sister to the Listed winner Rom Baro (Time Thief). She has a yearling filly by Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and a weanling filly by Nicconi (Bianconi) and was covered by Zoustar’s son Zousain last spring.
In winning on the weekend, Glistening became the 19th individual stakes winner for Widden Stud’s Zoustar.
