The Lindsay Park-trained colt made a favourable impression when winning on debut at Cranbourne yesterday. Ridden by Mark Zahra from the outside barrier in the 13-horse field, the three-year-old settled towards the rear of the field before improving on the home turn. Zahra then produced his mount with a strong late finish to win by just under half a length.
Gunn Island is one of seven named foals, who are all winners, out of Group Three winner La Rumba (Centaine).
His second dam, Miss Rumba (Citidancer), is a sister to Sha Tin Vase (HK Gr 2, 1600m) winner Citiluck and is the dam of two winners.
Further back this is also the family of Group Two winner Carlaw (Ward Drill) and Showglade Fair, who is the dam of the Group Three winner and Group One placed Sierra Sand (Avon Valley) and Group Three winner Hon Kwok Star (Straight Strike).
La Rumba also foaled a filly by Dalakhani (Darshaan) in 2014 and a colt by Equiano (Acclamation) in 2015. She was served by Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) on a November cover in 2015.
