Inglis Classic sale topper wins Rosehill trial

Annabel Neasham enjoyed a juvenile trial win as Shelstein, an unraced son of Written Tycoon (Iglesia), who topped the 2023 edition of the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, landed one of the seven juvenile trials conducted at Rosehill on Friday.

The colt hit the line impressively in his 1030-metre trial, coming home 0.1 lengths ahead of the Ciaron Maher-trained Shanwah (Too Darn Hot), who was the second top lot at the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale in 2023 when selling to Cameron Cooke Bloodstock for NZ$750,000.

Neasham teamed up with TFI and Kia Ora Stud to purchase Shelstein from the Berkeley Park Stud draft for $550,000 at last year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. The colt is the first foal out of Group 3 winner Sylvia’s Mother.

The Chris Waller-trained Indigo Star, an unraced colt by Zoustar (Northern Meteor), also landed a trial on Friday, when he cruised to victory in his 900-metre heat.

Having finished fourth in his first barrier trial at the same track on May 2, the colt looked to have furnished since that appearance, finishing smoothly under James McDonald, crossing the line 0.1 lengths ahead of Tact (The Autumn Sun). Railway Man (I Am Invincible), a $2.5 million colt out of Group 1 winner Booker (Written Tycoon), finished fourth.

Indigo Star was bought by owners Hermitage Thoroughbreds from the Widden Stud draft for $1.3 million at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He is out of stakes winner Lady Jivago (Beneteau) and hails from the same family as Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice).

Later on in the morning, Waller also enjoyed a trial winner with the unraced filly Avior (Deep Field). Improving on her recent ninth placed finish in a 900-metre trial at Rosehill, the $290,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling purchase looked comfortable over the same course and distance on Friday, eventually beating Sharon Drive (Zousain) by a length.

McDonald combined with Maher to win Heat 3, the first two-year-old event of the morning, with colt Goodlucktome (Written Tycoon).

Bred and retained to race by Hutchins Thoroughbreds, the son of Written Tycoon, who was winning his third trial, hit the line impressively to beat Bella Corazon (I Am Invincible) in the 1030-metre event, while Depth Of Character (Deep Field) finished 0.1 lengths away in third.

Out of the Group 2 winner Ameila’s Dream (Redoute’s Choice), Goodlucktome is a half-brother to stakes-placed duo Impasse (Sepoy) and Better Land (Shamardal). The colt holds nominations for the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 1 and the JJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m) at the same track on June 15.

Element Hill will offer Goodlucktome’s So You Think (High Chaparral) half-brother at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale next week. The colt is catalogued as Lot 14.

The Richard Collett-trained Tessy Tee (Rubick) was last seen winning a 797-metre barrier trial at Warwick Farm last month and the $95,000 Inglis Classic sale purchase landed her second on Friday when she took out Heat 8, a 900-metre event, beating Humid (Snitzel) by 0.1 lengths.

In the next trial of the morning, the Richard and Will Freedman-trained Synergize (Strasbourg), who is bred and raced by the China Horse Club, doubled her tally of trial wins when she defeated Good Sort (Tassort) by 0.3 lengths, with Lady Savannah (Snitzel) finishing a further 1.1 lengths further back in third.

The Freedmans enjoyed another trial winner on Friday when I Am A Winner, another unraced colt by Yulong’s Written Tycoon, took out his 900-metre heat, beating the team Hawkes-trained Apex (Exceedance) by 0.4 lengths.
