It’s Magic in March as Adelaide Yearling Sale catalogue is released

Buyers will be scouring the market for the next Asfoora (Flying Artie) after the catalogue for the 2025 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale was released on Tuesday.

Henry Dwyer’s Royal Ascot heroine was offered for sale by Noor Elaine Farm at the 2020 Adelaide Yearling Sale, only to be passed in having failed to meet her $30,000 reserve price – leaving prospective purchasers to kick themselves after she racked up $2.2 million (and counting) in prizemoney.

The sale’s motto is ‘opportunity knocks’, and that certainly appears to be the case again this year, with more than 450 lots set to go under the hammer at the Morphettville complex across two days of selling, starting on March 17.

The progeny of more than 100 sires will be up for auction, including 13 stallions offering their very first Australian crops.

“It’s an incredible book I think, the strength in both breeders and supporters, the variety of stallions, and the types [on offer] – we went out and selected these horses,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We’re very very pleased with where we’ve ended up. I think the sale has yet again built on itself – vendors don’t have to go to Adelaide, they choose to go to Adelaide and they’ve chosen to continue to support the sale with great gusto.

“I think Adelaide’s the sale where you can go with any budget and be very happy with what’s on offer. Not only that, it’s a sale where you can have a great time, it’s a fun place whether you’re selling or buying.

“You can buy a life changer – Asfoora was bought at the Adelaide Yearling Sale. If you go back in time, for decades now some unbelievable horses have come out of this sale.

“We got a great addition last Saturday with the big two-year-old winner in Brisbane [Dushenka] being another graduate – year on year the graduates’ successes are extremely strong.”

Other high-profile graduates of the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale include Proven Thoroughbreds’ crack sprinter Private Eye (Al Maher), who has converted his $62,500 purchase price into almost $12 million in racetrack earnings, as well as outstanding Hong Kong miler Galaxy Patch.

The son of Wandjina (Snitzel) was purchased for $50,000 by Will Clarken and Suman Hedge Bloodstock before being sold to Hong Kong connections after winning on debut at Morphettville. Since his switch to the Asian racing mecca, he has amassed multiple stakes wins under the tutelage of Pierre Ng.

Every yearling purchased at the sale is eligible to be paid up for the Magic Millions Race Series, which offers $20 million in prizemoney and bonuses across 28 restricted races each year.

The 2025 Magic Millions SA Raceday will be held on March 8, with the $200,000 Magic Millions SA 2YO Classic (1100m) headlining the action at Murray Bridge. The roll call of winners includes subsequent stakes scorer Scorched Earth (Nicconi), a $90,000 purchase who scorched the turf to win by more than five lengths.

Inspections will begin on March 13, ahead of the first day of the sale which gets underway at 10am the following Monday. Lots 228 to 455 will then pass through the ring on the second and final day, March 18.
