Joint-top lots reach €42,000 at Arqana as Furtado lands Johnny Barnes filly
Colts by Mastercraftsman and Whitecliffsofdover lead the way
British-based trainer Ivan Furtado was a familiar face among the buyers for the fourth day of Arqana’s extended October Yearling Sale when signing the winning docket for a Haras des Granges-consigned Johnny Barnes (Acclamation) filly.
Furtado, who has established a satellite yard in France, struck at €21,000 (approx. AUD$34,800) for the filly from the family of stakes winners Sister Trouble (Spectrum) and Messoeurs (Anabaa) and spoke of the premiums on offer for French-breds as an extra incentive for buying at the sale.
He said: “We bought a French-bred to try and win and win a maiden there really. We’re keen to buy one or two from here because of the premiums and our plan is to go back and win with her if she’s good enough.”
The joint-top lots of the day came when Haras de Grandcamp’s Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) and Haras de la Haie Neuve’s Whitecliffsofdover (War Front) colts sold for €42,000 (approx. AUD$69,600) apiece.
The former, who is out of the multiple stakes-winning mare Fair Breeze (Trade Fair) and a half-brother to the Group 1-placed Fair Mountain (Tiger Hill), sold to Daniela Nowara of Gestut Ammerland, while the Whitecliffsofdover colt went the way of Langlais Bloodstock.
Haras du Mont Goubert’s Morandi (Holy Roman Emperor) colt led for much of the day when selling to Francois Monfort for €31,000 (approx. AUD$51,375). Out of the Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Arcangela, he is a half-brother to the Martyn Meade-trained Lyzbeth (Zoffany), winner of the Listed Cathedral Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Goodwood in June.
Earlier on in the session, Joel Boisnard went to €30,000 (approx. AUD$49,700) for Normandie Breeding’s Olympic Glory (Choisir) filly. Out of the Makfi (Dubawi) mare Bailey’s Parisienne, she comes from the page of the Group 3-placed Eternal Power (Tiger Hill) with Classic heroine Imagine (Sadler’s Wells) further back in the pedigree.
Acomb Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) winner Recorder (Galileo) saw his first-crop son from Haras de Montfort & Preaux reach €28,000 (approx. AUD$46,400) to John Hammond. Hailing from the family of leading first-season sire Goken (Kendargent), he is also related to this season’s Prix de Guiche (Gr 3, 1800m) runner-up Hurricane Cloud (Frankel) and the stakes-placed Kenbaio (Kendargent).
The session concluded with an 83 per cent clearance rate, much in line with earlier days, with 87 of the 105 lots changing hands for a total of €1,221,500 (approx. AUD$2.024 million). The daily average stood at €14,040 (approx. AUD$23,265)and the median was calculated at €13,000 (approx. AUD$21,550), ahead of Friday’s concluding session.
