The midweek meeting on the Kensington track at Randwick on Wednesday produced two impressive maiden winners in the first two races, both for first season sires.
The runaway Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained juvenile Baroque Road (Caravaggio) claimed race one, and he was followed in the second division of the Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap (1100m) by Koshu (2 f Satono Aladdin – Tootsie by Pins), who this week claims Maiden of the Week status.
Potently bred and equally as impressive on the track, the John O’Shea-trained Koshu dominated on debut, displaying a devastating turn of foot to leave all trailing behind her and win by three and a quarter lengths over Silentstar (Russian Revolution) and Secret Revolution (Russian Revolution), who battled for the minor placings.
“I was blessed to have a filly of this quality walk into the stable. She’s only really been in the yard for a short period and came over from New Zealand in great shape,” O’Shea said in the aftermath of the race.
“She’s a queen of a filly and I’m really looking forward to the spring. She never got lost when she got out in front and looks a classic miler.”
A homebred for Brent and Cherry Taylor, in whose Trelawney Stud silks she raced, Koshu is the third winner for Rich Hill Stud’s Japanese stallion Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) and looks to be a potential star for the young sire, who also has the stakes placed Sacred Satono in New Zealand and 22 winners in Japan from two crops of racing age.
Out of Syrah (Traditionally), whose best finish on the track was a second at Ruakaka from six starts, Koshu is one of eight foals and eight winners from her dam, who has also produced Group 1 winners Loire (Redoute’s Choice) and A Touch Of Ruby (Pins) as well as the stakes placed Aquaoir (Ocean Park).
Koshu’s granddam, the Group 2 winner Real Success (Success Express), produced Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) winner Vouvray (Zabeel) as well as Listed winner Bolton (Zabeel), while her pedigree traces back to sixth dam and 1965 US Broodmare of the Year Pochantas (Roman), who produced five foals to race, all stakes winners, including champion three-year-old colt Tom Rolfe (Robot).
Satono Aladdin will stand the upcoming breeding season for a fee of $12,500 (plus GST).
