Trainer Wayne Wilkes unearthed a talented late-season juvenile in the shape of Laizabout (Zoustar) who blitzed his rivals at Taree on Tuesday.
Having his first competitive start, Laizabout backed up a strong trial performance at the same track earlier this month as he bolted away under Patrick Scorse to win by 6.5 lengths in a maiden handicap over 1000 metres.
“Laizabout is still very green and raw, but he did a great job. Now we’ll sit back and make sure he’s OK after that run and then map out something for him,” the winning trainer told Racing NSW.
“We’ll have a plan A, B and C depending on what’s available for him and as long as he pulls up OK, with no signs of soreness or anything, we’ll probably have a look at something provincial or maybe even Sydney somewhere.
“They’ll probably hit him with a few extra Benchmark points, winning like that at his first start, so it’ll probably force our hand a little bit to go that way. But he shows promise, so I’d be keen to find out how he’d handle a rise in class.”
A $50,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Widden Stud draft for his trainer, Laizabout is the fourth winner from four foals to race out of Divine Nature (Casino Prince), a placed three-quarter sister to Group 3 winner Sookie (Casino Prince), the dam of dual Group 1 winner Shadow Hero (Pierro). Divine Nature is also a daughter of Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Victory Vein (Mr Henrysee).
Widden sold another filly by Zousain (Zoustar) from Divine Nature at Inglis Classic this year for $60,000, again to Wilkes, and she has another weanling filly by the same sire to follow.
Zousain will stand for a fee of $27,500 (inc GST) in 2024.
