Malahat (AUS)
O: Godolphin
B: Darley
T: Darren Beadman
W: Rubick @ Coolmore Maiden Plate, 1200 metres, Canterbury, 10 May
Having his fourth start and his first this preparation, Malahat was smartly away from barrier four in the ten-horse field. Under Tye Angland, Malahat went to the front and was then pressured for the lead nearing the 600 metre mark. WIth 200 metres left to run, he quickened nicely and went on to score impressively by two and a quarter lengths in a time of 1:10.59.
Placed third in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) behind Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) in January, Malahat is the first foal out of the Woodlands Stud-bred mare Raspberries (Lonhro).
A dual Group Three winner, Raspberries is a half-sister to four winners being out of La Melba (Grand Lodge) who is herself a daughter of the multiple Listed winner Ice Cream Sundae (Sovereign Red). Ice Cream Sundae produced five winners from eight foals to race headed by the Group One winner Flavour (Rubiton) who raced 79 times for 14 wins including the Salinger Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
Raspberries has a yearling, named Fallgold (Exceed And Excel), a weanling filly by Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) and was covered by Exceed And Excel (Danehill) again last December.
