Ipswich would not usually be the first place to go looking for a potential future star to feature as a Maiden of the Week in Friday’s edition of ANZ Bloodstock News. But Ipswich would not usually be the first place you’d look to find a $425,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate by Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) making their debut in a juvenile handicap.
On Monday, Canungra trainer Kacy Fogden presented the high-priced colt out of the stakes-winning Fascination Street (Elusive City) at the country Queensland track. What ensued was a five-and-a-quarter-length procession over the 1100 metres.
But it was the manner of victory that impressed over what were clearly inferior rivals in this $25,000 contest. With the ear muffs on, he was sent straight to the front from barrier 2 by Andrew Mallyon, as Maotai bossed proceedings under a strong hold from his rider and, with the rest of the field off the bridle turning the bend, the race was all but over in a matter of a few impressive strides.
Maotai stopped the clock at 1 min 04.59 secs for the five-and-a-half furlongs, coming home in 34.02 secs for the last 600 metres.
The city, and likely much loftier targets, await.
The Fung Family-owned colt holds entries for the BRC Sires’ Produce (Gr 2, 1400m) on May 29 and the JJ Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) a fortnight later.
Bred by Milburn Creek, he is the first foal out of his dam, Fascination Street, a five-time winner including at Listed level at Rotorua, who is a sister to stakes winner Lamington Vegas.
Her second foal, a filly by Russian Revolution (Snitzel), was bought by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock for $80,000 out of the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale this year. She has a weanling colt by Lonhro (Octagonal) and was placed in foal to Written Tycoon (Iglesia) last year.
There are two horses to have raced that are bred on the exact Not A Single Doubt – Elusive City (Elusive Quality) cross. The other is Aquis Farm’s Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Dubious.
