Mighty Boss caps off a great day for Not A Single Doubt
For the past 12 months the achievements of consistent Arrowfield Stud stallion Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) have been overshadowed by his barnmate, champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).
Last Saturday, though, was the day for Not A Single Doubt to shine as never before with four stakes winners in Melbourne and Sydney plus two-year-old colt Legend Of Condor (Not A Single Doubt) winning on debut at Randwick.
Snitzel, of course, was far from forgotten on the day as the father of Redzel, the inaugural winner of the $10,000,000 The Everest (1200m), a victory which almost certainly ensured he will again be Australia’s champion sire this season and likely to eclipse his record breaking feats in the 2016/17 season.
Longshot Mighty Boss led Not A Single Doubt’s winners on Saturday with his triumph in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1,1600m) while on the same program six-year-old mare Cool Passion (Not A Single Doubt) captured the Cape Grim Beef Steaks Stakes (registered as Northwood Plume Stakes) (Gr 3, 1200m) and first starter, two-year-old filly Qafila (Not A Single Doubt) took out the Debutant Stakes (Listed,1000m) while at Randwick three-year-old filly Torvill (Not A Single Doubt) opened her black type account in the Reginald Allen Quality (Listed, 1400m).
These performances took Not A Single Doubt’s tally of stakes winners to 48, 17 of which have won as juveniles and eight of them are Group One winners.
Not A Single Doubt himself won the Canonbury Stakes (Listed, 1000m) as a two-year-old at Randwick and at three he took out the Zeditave Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield but while this first crop son of three times champion sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) was not a true star as a racehorse he has exceeded expectations as a sire, standing this season at a fee of $88,000 (inc GST).
Mighty Boss now joins Miracles Of Life, Extreme Choice, Secret Agenda, Scales Of Justice, Good Project, Single Gaze and Clearly Innocent as the best of his sire’s stock. Physically Mighty Boss looks very like Miracles Of Life, with both being flashy palominos with a flaxen mane and tail and carry the colours of Muzaffar Yaseen’s Teeley Assets, colours originally made famous by the deeds of Redoute’s Choice, their paternal grandsire.
The breeding story behind Mighty Boss is something of a game of musical chairs involving entities associated with Coolmore and Teeley Assets Ltd.
A Coolmore-linked partnership bred Mighty Boss’s dam Bullion Mansion (Encosta De Lago) who was bought by Teeley Assets for $625,000 at the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale before going on to win in Melbourne. Teeley Assets retired her to stud in 2010 and for the company she bred three successive foals by Stratum (Redoute’s Choice), stakes placed Shiralee, the placegetter Beyond Calculation and Bullion Wolf, winner of three races in Adelaide.
In foal to Not A Single Doubt, Bullion Mansion was part of the Teeley Assets dispersal at the 2014 Magic Millions National Sale, selling for $160,000 to Coolmore associate Cobra Bloodstock Australia. Cobra Bloodstock later sold the colt she was carrying, Mighty Boss, under the Curraghmore Stud banner at the 2016 New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale where trainer Mick Price spent NZ $180,000 to buy him, later selling a majority interest to Teeley Assets to complete an unusual circle.
Following Mighty Boss, Bullion Mansion in 2015 and 2016 foaled fillies by Declaration Of War (War Front), both sold at auction this year for modest prices, and is now due to foal to No Nay Never (Scat Daddy).
Mighty Boss comes from a family with its origins in Western Australia, a family which has also recently given us Melbourne stakes winners Seaburge (Sebring) and Catch A Fire (Sebring).
His second dam La Volta (Laranto), the family’s previous standout, was a versatile and top class performer although she won only three races, her highlight win coming in the 1998 SAJC Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m). She also won the SAJC Auraria Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m), was runner–up in the SAJC South Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) and placed in five more black type races in Melbourne.
Within five generations Mighty Boss is linebred to Northern Dancer (Nearctic) (three crosses) and his champion son Nijinsky and carries a total of six lines of Northern Dancer throughout his pedigree.
More remotely, Mighty Boss’s well balanced pedigree also has duplications of Sir Ivor (Sir Gaylord), Nasrullah (Nearco) and his son Rego, Native Dancer (Polynesian) and Star Kingdom (Stardust) and he is another fine example of the benefits of blending the blood of Danehill (Danzig) with Encosta De Lago (Fairy King).
