Newgate buys into ‘special’ Ozzmosis

The Newgate Farm-China Horse Club colts partnership has made a multimillion dollar investment in trainer Bjorn Baker’s unbeaten juvenile colt Ozzmosis (Zoustar) on the back of his impressive Randwick victory last Saturday.

Newgate’s Henry Field and his large group of partners swooped on the Darby Racing-owned colt after renowned ratings analyst Daniel O’Sullivan gave his endorsement of the future prospects of Ozzmosis, who will be set for the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and possibly the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in the spring.

The CHC-Newgate group has previously bought into lightly raced colts such as subsequent Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Stay Inside and his own sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) as well as Profiteer (Capitalist).

“We have had a lot of success buying these horses at an early stage, some win and some lose, but over the period we’ve done well at it and we feel this horse ticks the boxes,” Field said yesterday.

“A big feature of buying into the horse is the professionalism and the way Darby Racing run their business and we feel very happy to be in partnership with Darby Racing and their ownership group with this colt.”

Ozzmosis won a heat at the official Sydney two-year-old barrier trials last September in the lead up to the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m), but Baker and Darby Racing were forced to be patient, not producing him until last month when he won a Gosford maiden over 1100 metres in stylish fashion.

“He was a horse we actually had a lot of time for as a yearling, but we didn’t end up playing on him because we thought he was a fraction immature, but a quality horse all the same,” Field said.

“Then, to see him go to the early two-year-old trials and make a statement there, we took notice of him straight away.

“He was very dominant at the provincials first-up and on Saturday he won a very strong form race, which he also won in very, very good time.

“Being by Zoustar and out of a top mare as well as having the right physicality and further improvement to come, we thought he ticked the boxes of what we want to achieve when we buy into these horses.”

The China Horse Club-bred colt, who is out of New Zealand Group 3 winner and Sydney Group 3-placed mare No More Tears (Darci Brahma) whose second dam Ocean Of Tears (Minardi) is a half-sister to blue hen mare Hips Don’t Lie (Stravinsky), was purchased by syndicator Darby Racing at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $250,000.

Field added: “Our colts won or placed in every one of the five Group 1 two-year-old races this year, with Don Corleone second in the Blue Diamond, King’s Gambit third in the Golden Slipper, Militarize won the two other Group 1s in Sydney and Tannhauser ran third in the JJ [Atkins], so we’ve got a lovely deck of cards, but we just felt this horse was pretty special.”
