Pariah Stakes His Claim For The Golden Rose
Pariah (Redoute’s Choice), one of Australia’s best two-year-olds last season, showed he may be even better at three with a stylish first up win in last Saturday’s San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m).
Settled back in the field from his wide barrier, Pariah took the lead in the straight after a skilful ride from jockey Blake Shinn, before easily holding off the late challenge of Chauffeur (Snitzel) to score by a length with the filly Jorda (Exceed and Excel) a neck back in third place. The race time was 1:03.20, with the last 600 metres run in 34.17.
Pariah won the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) in race record time on debut in January, defeating Menari (Snitzel), but was then beaten by Property (Starcraft) in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 3, 1100m) for colts and geldings. He then beat that colt home, when second by a long neck to Catchy (Fastnet Rock) in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
Returned to Sydney, Pariah, like several others, failed to handle the very heavy conditions in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), finishing 11th to She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain).
Pariah is now likely to contest The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) on Saturday week as his final lead up run to the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on 23 September.
A tall, high quality individual with a striking head, Pariah is bred in the purple. James Harron Bloodstock had to go to $700,000 to secure him for a group of owners at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, when offered by Arrowfield Stud for co-breeders Arrowfield Pastoral Pty Ltd and John Leaver’s Planette Thoroughbreds.
The colt is destined to return to Arrowfield as a sire at the conclusion of his racing career, as they locked in standing rights some months ago.
Arrowfield has not only Pariah’s father Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), but also four of his sons on its 2017 roster. The great success achieved by champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) has made it easier to attract patronage to younger horses like Panzer Division (Redoute’s Choice) and Scissor Kick (Redoute’s Choice) as less expensive alternatives. The same will apply to Pariah when he retires, most likely in 2018.
Redoute’s Choice, three-time champion sire in Australia, has become Australia’s most important sire of sires since his father Danehill (Danzig), as other than Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt, he has left a number of other successful sire sons, most notably Stratum, Nadeem, Beneteau, Fast ‘N’ Famous and Bradbury’s Luck.
Pariah is the first foal of Secluded (Hussonet), and is thus bred on the same Redoute’s Choice-Hussonet (Mr. Prospector) cross as South African champion Majmu, and on a broadly similar cross to champion Miss Finland (Mr. Prospector), Gallica (Mr. Prospector) and a number of other good winners whose maternal grandsires are also sons of Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native).
Secluded has a two-year-old colt named Malik (Redoute’s Choice), a brother to Pariah, but has slipped and missed to Redoute’s Choice in the past two seasons.
Twice a winner in Sydney at 1200 metres, Secluded is a half-sister to outstanding sprinter Melito (Redoute’s Choice), earner of almost $2,000,000 in prize money and thus very closely related to Pariah.
Secluded’s dam Cloister (Marauding) won the Debutante Stakes (Listed, 900m) before producing six winners while her stakes winning dam Pampas Fire (Prince True) was one of five black type winners out of the remarkable producer Summoned (Crowned Prince).
Breeders can gain confidence in Pariah’s future stud prospects as Summoned bred former leading sire Zeditave (The Judge), a five-time Group One winner, and the short lived Alannon (Noalcoholic), best remembered as the sire of top sprinter Falvelon, himself also a success at stud in Queensland.
The late international breeder Souren Vanian imported Pariah’s fifth dam Sweet Life (Pardao) to Australia as her stakes-winning brother Spoiled Lad (Pardao) was standing in NSW but Spoiled Lad left little of note other than Great Lover, winner of the 1976 ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).
Sweet Life’s contribution to Australian breeding proved more important than that of her brother, and apart from the major winners mentioned above, her descendents include the young Aquis Farm sire Furnaces (Exceed and Excel), champion New Zealand filly Shikoba (Chief Bearhart) and You’re So Good (Savabeel).
Pariah is linebred 5×5 to the brilliant Biscay (Star Kingdom) and also carries a 5×5 double of champion Sir Ivor (Sir Gaylord).
