Perroquet (NZ) 3 f Ocean Park – Pernod by Centaine
The Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained Perroquet (Ocean Park) scored this victory on her third career start, having failed to finish at Matamata on debut in December before running fourth on at Avondale in January.
The three-year-old filly broke well from barrier seven under Michael McNab, before accelerating wide from the 500 metres to the entrance into the home straight, levelling up to the leaders and pulling clear to win by a length and a quarter, in a time of 1:36.99.
Bred and retained to race by Trelawney Stud, Perroquet is from the first crop of the Waikato Stud-based sire Ocean Park (Thorn Park), already the sire of 24 winners.
The filly is the sixth winner, from eight foals to race, from the Group One-winning mare Pernod (Centaine) making the filly a half-sister to dual Group Three winner Martini Red (Red Ransom).
Pernod herself is out of the stakes-placed Grosvenor (Sir Tristram) mare Martine Michelle and is a half-sister to Shanghai Moon (Carnegie), the dam of South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Kushadasi (Choisir) and Listed winner Karlovasi (Reaan).
Perroquet’s third dam is the Group Two-winning mare Josette Nicole (Three Legs), who is herself a sister to the 1984-85 champion New Zealand three-year-old and Group One winner Eastern Joy (Three Legs).
In 2015 Pernod foaled a colt by Savabeel (Zabeel), who subsequently died, and in 2016 she foaled another colt by Ocean Park.
