Pinnace
2 f Astern – Shatters by Lonhro
TRAINER: James Cummings
RACE: Neds Punters Toolbox Handicap (1100m)
The once-raced winner Pinnace (Astern) will take a step up in grade today when she contests the Neds Punters Toolbox Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield.
Trained by James Cummings, the Godolphin-bred filly looked useful when making a successful debut at Newcastle earlier this month, coming home a length winner of a 900-metre maiden, on the Heavy 8 surface, and beating Island Tide (All Too Hard) with a further half-length back to Kissaki (Street Boss) in third.
Having finished second in barrier trials at Randwick and Rosehill respectively since that debut effort, the two-year-old has drawn a wide barrier in 16. She will be ridden for the first time by apprentice jockey Alana Kelly.
Pinnace is the sixth foal to race out of the three-time-winning Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Shatters and is closely related to the 2015 Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) winner Shards (Medaglia D’Oro), who was also runner-up in the Stan Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) and The Vase (Gr 2, 2040m); while also being a half-sister to winners Demolition (Street Cry), Dynamited (Exceed And Excel), Grenadiers (Epaulette) and Damaged (Exceed And Excel).
Out of the winning Quest For Fame (Rainbow Quest) mare Smash, Shatters was sold by Godolphin to Pinhook Bloodstock for $35,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale when again in foal to Astern (Medaglia D’Oro). She has since produced a filly by former Darley stallion Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor).
