Peter Snowden admits that big-money buy Sakima (Snitzel), a three-quarter sister to her stakes-placed former stablemate Russian Conquest (Russian Revolution), is still a work in progress but her first-up win on the Kensington track on Wednesday proved to her co-trainer that the two-year-old is heading in the right direction.

The $1.25 million Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, who was purchased by her trainers, agent Will Johnson and Trilogy Racing last year, won her 1100-metre maiden under Jason Collett. The filly had raced once in March before being spelled.

Having been settled back near the tail of the seven-runner field on Wednesday, Sakima was

angled out to the centre of the track before letting down impressively to defeat the game So You Think (High Chaparral) debutant Queen’s Rhapsody by a length, with the Written Tycoon (Iglesia) filly Alinea 2.9 lengths further back in third.

“It was good to see her do that. She’s always promised a bit, and she is a well-related filly, and it was a good win first-up,” said Snowden, who trains the winner in partnership with his son Paul.

“She is not the finished product. She’s from a good family, so hopefully, she can go on with it and win a good race.”

Sakima, who wears the Trilogy Racing silks, is also a half-sister to the US stakes-placed winner Bourbon War (Tapit), being the third winner out of the high-class Artie Schiller (El Prado) mare My Conquestadory.

The winner of Keeneland’s Alcibiades Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f), My Conquestadory was a US$1,500,000 purchase for SF Bloodstock & Newgate Farm at Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale in 2016.

After foaling a Russian Revolution (Snitzel) filly last spring, My Conquestadory was again covered by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).

Lime Country Thoroughbreds and Ravenswood Bloodstock combined to buy Russian Conquest for $580,000 from the Newgate consignment at the 2024 National Broodmare Sale.
