W: Atlantic Jewel Stakes, Listed, 1200m, September 7, Moonee Valley
Godolphin’s Silmarillion (Too Darn Hot) broke her maiden in a tidy manner last Saturday when scoring in Moonee Valley’s Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed, 1200m).
Having finished placed in four of her previous five outings, including in the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) as a juvenile and Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) this season, the James Cummings-trained filly took up the entry in the Listed contest instead of the Furious Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on the same day.
Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, who had also been aboard for the filly’s two other outings this campaign, the daughter of Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) swooped around the field on the turn to run away from her rivals, beating Supercilious (Written Tycoon) by 0.8 lengths with Sakima (Snitzel) another 0.7 lengths away in third.
“She might be able to go a little bit further,” McEvoy said post-race. “It was nice just to be able to get a sit on them today.
“The other day I probably just hit the front a little bit early on her and we were left a sitting shot after being there on the pace in a fast-run race.
“She’s come a long way in this preparation and they picked a nice option for her, so full credit to James and the team and to her.
“It was her first run this way and she handled it with aplomb. She handled it really well.”
Out of dual winner Yavanna (Redoute’s Choice), the Godolphin raced and bred filly is a half-sister to Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Kementari (Lonhro) and Listed scorer Telperion (Street Cry), who finished second in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).
Crowned last season’s champion first-season sire, Too Darn Hot’s other stakes winner in Australia is the dual top-flight winner Broadsiding.
Despite not returning to Australia in 2024, Too Darn Hot is available to cover on southern hemisphere time from Darley’s Dalham Hall base for a fee of £50,000 (approx. AU$98,500).
