Spywire (Trapeze Artist) could be set for a tilt at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 13 after he ran out an impressive winner of an 1100-metre maiden at Rosehill.
Ridden by Tyler Schiller for the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace yard, the colt made all, quickening impressively clear inside the final 300 metres before being eased down to a two-and-a-quarter-lengths success over Canara (I Am Invincible), with a further four and a quarter lengths back to Everybody Rise (Snitzel) in third place.
“He did everything right; jumped straight to the front, which was not really the plan, but he did it well, controlling it from the front, and he kicked away,” stable representative Johann Gerard-Dubord said.
“He learnt plenty from the trials, and that was very professional. It’s great to get a win at his first start. We have some good stable clients in him – they are Ozzie Kheir’s colours, John O’Neil, Widden, Lindsay Caminiti; they paid a lot of money for him; he is a lovely horse.
“The [Magic Millions] is on the cards. This is the right time of year for this kind of horse. We will be considering it.”
Spywire was purchased at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Maher and Group 1 Bloodstock from the Widden Stud draft for $520,000, making him the highest-priced colt sold by Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) at public auction in 2023.
He is the the second winner from three to race out of the stakes-winning Denman (Lonhro) mare Secret Trail, who has a yearling filly by Zoustar (Northern Meteor), but missed to the Widden Stud flagbearer last year. She was covered by Darley’s freshman sire Anamoe (Street Boss) in September.
Trapeze Artist has sired 20 winners in total and his progeny are headed by Group 1 Griff. He stands at Widden Stud’s New South Wales base for a fee of $55,000 (inc GST).
