Stallion Watch – Blue Point

New winners

Blue Point – Darley Stud shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal) sired three individual winners last week, taking his tally to 38. The Charlie Appleby-trained Edge Of Blue (2 g ex Davantage by Galileo) made a winning debut over seven furlongs at Yarmouth to become winner number 36. Bought by his owners Godolphin for €200,000 at the Arqana August Yearling Sale in 2022, Edge Of Blue is out of dual winner Davantage (Galileo), making him a half-sister to Group 3 winner Devant (Showcasing). Davantage, herself, is a half-sister French Group 1 winner Blue Canari (Acatenango) and Listed winner Blue Ksar (Anabaa). Enchanting (2 f ex Tisa River by Equiano) chalked up Blue Point’s 37th individual winner when she landed a five-furlong novice at Beverley on her second start. Enchanting is out of placed mare Tisa River (Equiano), who is herself a half-sister to Grade 1 winners Order Of Australia (Australia) and Santa Barbara (Camelot), while she is also a half-sister multiple top-flight winner Iridessa (Ruler Of The World). Blue Point then added his 38th individual winner when Serene Seraph (2 f ex Pacific Angel by Dalakhani) made it third time lucky in a seven-furlong fillies’ event at Newbury. The third foal out of the Listed-winning Dalakhani (Darshaan) mare Pacific Angel, Serene Seraph is closely related to UAE dirt winner Nopoli (Lope De Vega) and a half-sister to winner Paris Affair (Frankel). Blue Point, who stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Kildangan Stud for a fee of €35,000 (approx. AU$57,730), will stand the southern hemisphere season at Darley Australia’s Northwood Park for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST). He has had 90 starters.

 

Too Darn Hot – Darley shuttler Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) was handed his 16th individual winner when Phoenix Passion (2 c ex Souvenir Delondres by Siyouni) made a winning handicap debut over a mile at Yarmouth. Sold by his breeder Stratford Place Stud at Book 2 of last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Phoenix Passion was purchased by Opulence Thoroughbreds, in whose colours he races, for 125,000gns. He is the fifth foal out of the Group 3-winning mare Souvenir Delondres, making him a half-brother to Group 3 scorer and 2021 Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) runner-up Dr Zempf (Dark Angel). Too Darn Hot, who stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Dalham Hall Stud for £40,000 (approx. AU$76,620), is standing at Darley’s Kelvinside base for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST). He has had 46 starters.

 

New Group / Grade 1 winners

Adlerflug – Five-year-old mare India (5 m ex Ivory Coast by Peintre Celebre) struck for the first time at Group 1 level when winning the Preis von Europa (Gr 1, 2400m) at Cologne, becoming the seventh individual elite-level winner for her sire Adlerflug (In The Wings). Now the winner of eight of her 17 starts, India added to three victories at Group 3 level. The 11th foal out of the unraced Ivory Coast, India is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Ivory Land (Lando). Adlerflug, who has had 272 starters, died in 2017.

 

Always Dreaming – WinStar Farm stallion Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) sired his first elite-level winner when Saudi Crown (3 c ex New Narration by Tapit) won the Pennsylvania Derby (Gr 1, 9f) at Parx. The Brad Cox-trained Saudi Crown who has won twice in four starts, including two placed efforts at Graded level, also becomes the second individual stakes winner for Always Dreaming, who this year stood his fourth season at stud for a fee of US$10,000 (approx. AU$15,523) and has had 121 starters.

 

Mr Big – Veteran stallion Mr Big (Dynaformer) sired his first elite-level winner when Ceiling Crusher (3 f ex Palisadesprincess by Indian Charlie) claimed the Cotillion Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Parx. Trained by Doug O’Neil, Ceiling Crusher, who has now won five of her six career starts, was a US$22,000 yearling buy for Tari Brocklebank at the 2021 California TBA North California Yearling & Horses of Racing Age sale. Mr Big, who has had 141 starters, stands at Rancho Temescal for a fee of US$6,500 (approx. AU$10,090).

 

New stakes winners

Bow Creek – Breizh Eagle (5 g ex Breizh Touch by Country Reel) became the first individual stakes winner for his sire Bow Creek (Shamardal) when winning the Prix du Point du Jour (Listed, 1650m) at Craon. The Godolphin-raced Bow Creek won the Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Caulfield, as well as at Group 2 level in the UK. He stands in Spain at Yeguada Agrado for a fee of €2,500 (approx. AU$4,140) and has had 47 starters.

 

Churchill – Prime Art (2 f ex Mona Lisa’s Smile by War Front) provided Coolmore stallion Churchill (Galileo) with a 13th individual stakes winner when landing the Firth Of Clyde Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Ayr, Scotland’s only Group race. Prime Art is the first foal out of the winning War Front (Danzig) mare Mona Lisa’s Smile, herself closely related to Group 1 winner Horatio Nelson (Danehill) and a half-sister to Group 1 winner Van Gogh (American Pharoah) and Group 2 scorer Viscount Nelson (Giant’s Causeway). Churchill stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore’s Irish base for a fee of €30,000 (approx. AU$49,690) and shuttles to Coolmore Australia where he commands a fee of $22,000 (inc GST). He has had 356 starters.

 

Domesday – The Grant and Alana Williams-trained Villeins (5 g ex Canny Lassie by Canny Lad) won the Boulder Cup (Listed, 2100m) at Kalgoorlie to become the 19th individual stakes winner from 692 starters for his sire Domesday (Red Ransom). Having won once in seven starts in Sydney, Villeins was moved to the Western Australia stable of Grant and Alana Williams in December last year, and has since won four times in ten starts. He is the second foal out of the unplaced Canny Lad (Bletchingly) mare Canny Lassie, herself a half-sister to the stakes-placed See A Victory (Mister C).

 

Exceed And Excel – Darley stalwart Exceed And Excel (Danehill) was handed his 211th individual stakes winner from 2513 starters when Oz Empress (3 f ex Vanilla Princess by Lonhro) made all to score in the Jim Moloney Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Caulfield. A homebred for Tony Bott’s Evergreen Rich, Oz Empress is the fourth winner from as many to race out of the winning mare Vanilla Princess, making her a sister to Group 3-placed winner Key, who sold at last year’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for $1.1 million when carrying a Frankel (Galileo) colt. A daughter of Lonhro (Octagonal) and Princess Coup (Encosta De Lago), Vanilla Princess is a half-sister to the dual Group 3-winning Frankel filly Argentia and sprinter Thewizardofoz (Redoute’s Choice), a Group 3 winner in Hong Kong. Exceed And Excel stands at Kelvinside for a fee of $132,000 (inc GST).

 

Frankel – Juddmonte’s superstar stallion Frankel registered his 130th and 131st individual stakes winners last week, beginning when the Joseph O’Brien-trained Maxux (3 f ex Chrysanthemum by Danehill Dancer) took out the Lavarack and Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 1f) at Fairyhouse. Maxux was bought by her trainer and Fernando Laffon for 200,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2021. The filly is out of dual Group 3 scorer and Group 1-placed mare Chrysanthemum, making her a sister to Group 3 winner Cunco. Further back this is the same family as three-time Group 1-winning sprinter Highfield Princess (Night Of Thunder) as well as Group 2 scorer Cardsharp (Lonhro). The Charlie Appleby-trained Sapphire Seas (3 f ex Pure Diamond by Street Cry) produced an impressive display to take out the John Musker Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Yarmouth and in the process handed Frankel his 131st individual stakes winner. Bred and owned by Godolphin, Sapphire Seas is a daughter of Listed winner Pure Diamond (Street Cry), who is herself a daughter of Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed mare White Rose (Platini). Frankel, who has had 757 starters, is available for covers on southern hemisphere time at a fee of £125,000 (approx. AU$238,430). 

 

Gutaifan – Popmaster (5 g ex Best New Show by Clodovil) provided his sire Gutaifan (Dark Angel) with a fourth individual stakes winner when landing the Dubai Duty Free Cup Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Newbury. Popmaster is out of the winning Clodovil (Danehill) mare Best New Show, herself a sister to Listed-placed winner Maid In Heaven. Gutaifan stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras des Faunes for a fee of €3,000 (approx. AU$4,970) and has had 321 starters.

 

Harzand – Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Harzand (Sea The Stars) earned his second individual stakes winner when Caught U Looking (2 f ex Wild Mix by Mastercraftsman) won the Weld Park Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at the Curragh. Now the winner of two of her three career starts, Caught U Lookin is entered for next month’s Fillies Mile (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket. She is the first foal out of the unraced Wild Mix, herself a half-sister to Group 3 winners Mix And Mingle (Exceed And Excel) and Double Or Bubble (Exceed And Excel). Harzand, who has had 88 starters, stood the 2023 season at Kilbarry Lodge for a fee of €5,000 (approx. AU$8,280).

 

Inns Of Court – Megarry (2 c ex Highest Praise by Acclamation) became the first individual stakes winner for Tally Ho Stud stallion Inns Of Court (Invincible Spirit) when he scored in Monday’s Blenheim Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Fairyhouse. The fifth foal out of the Acclamation (Royal Applause) mare Highest Praise, Megarry is a half-brother to useful winners Gypsy Woman (Cotai Glory) and Adeb (Cotai Glory). Inns Of Court, who has had 75 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €5,000 (approx. AU$8,280). 

 

Intello – Maud Gonne Spirit (6 m ex Bari by Cape Cross) ran out a shock 80-1 winner of the Listowel Stakes (Listed, 1m 1f) to provide her sire Intello (Galileo) with a 23rd individual stakes winner. Maud Gonne Spirit is out of the winning Cape Cross (Green Desert) mare Bari, herself a half-sister to Listed scorer Brindisi (Dr Fong). Intello, who has had 378 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras de Beaumont for a fee of €8,000 (approx. AU$13,220).

 

Kodi Bear – Thunderbear (3 g ex Speronella by Raven’s Pass) became the eighth individual stakes winner for his sire Kodi Bear (Kodiac) when scoring in the World Trophy Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) at Newbury. A half-brother to four winners, Thunderbear is the fifth foal out of the placed Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality) mare Speronella, herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Move Up (Dubawi). Kodi Bear, who has had 177 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Rathbarry Stud for a fee of €15,000 (approx. AU$24,850).

 

Mehmas – Tally Ho Stud stallion Mehmas (Acclamation) recorded his 24th individual stakes winner when Amorevole (2 f ex Creme De Cremes by Rio De La Plata) landed the Premio Ubaldo Pandolfi (Listed, 1200m) at Rome in Italy. Amorevole is the only winning foal out of the winning Rio De La Plata (Rahy) mare Creme De Cremes. Mehmas, who has had 238 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €60,000 (approx. AU$99,000).

 

Le Havre – Fakarava (2 f ex Vespera by Teofilo) became the 60th individual stakes winner for the late Montfort et Preaux stallion Le Havre (Noverre) when landing the Criterium de Lyon (Listed, 1600m) at Lyon-Parilly. A €220,000 purchase for Meridian International Sarl from the La Motteraye Consignment at last year’s Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, Fakarava is the first foal out of the Group 3-placed winning Teofilo (Galileo) mare Vespera. Le Havre, who has had 843 starters, died in March last year.

 

Lope De Vega – Royal Rhyme (3 c ex Dubai Queen by Kingmambo) took the step up to stakes class in his stride as he landed the Doonside Cup Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Ayr, providing his sire Lope De Vega (Shamardal) with a 120th individual stakes winner. A homebred for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, in whose colours he races, Royal Rhyme is a half-brother to stakes-placed winner Zabeel Queen (Frankel) and to useful winners Sharja Queen (Pivotal), Aristocratic Lady (Invincible Spirit) and Regal Director (New Approach). He is the seventh foal out of the winning Kingmambo (Mr Prospector) mare Dubai Queen, herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner and now elite sire Dubawi (Dubai Millennium). Lope De Vega stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Ballylinch Stud for a fee of €125,000 (approx. AU$207,050). He has had 1201 starters.

 

No Nay Never – Coolmore Stud stallion No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) was handed his 56th individual stakes winner when Array (2 c ex Joyeuse by Oasis Dream) won the Mill Reef Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Newbury. Array is a half-brother to four winners including last year’s Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2100m) and Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) runner-up Maximal (Galileo), Group 1 placegetter Jubiloso (Shamardal) and the stakes-placed Jovial (Dubawi). He is out of the Listed-winning Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Joyeuse, herself a half-sister to outstanding ten-time Group 1 winner and now elite sire Frankel (Galileo). No Nay Never stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore’s Irish base for a fee of €175,000 (approx. AU$289,870). He has had 689 starters.

 

Shamardal – The William Haggas-trained Pink Crystal (4 f ex Cristal Fizz by Power) provided her sire Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) with his 167th individual stakes winner when landing the Scottish Sprint Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 5.5f) at Ayr. Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock and raced by Sheikh Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum, Pink Crystal is the first and only foal to race out of Cristal Fizz (Power), herself a winner of The Radley Stakes (Listed, 7f) for the same owner. Shamardal has had 1425 starters.

 

Spirit Of Boom – Eureka Stud stallion Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) was provided with his 22nd individual stakes winner from 503 starters when All That Pizzazz (4 g ex Pizzazz by Encosta De Lago) landed the Weetwood Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Toowoomba. Out of the unraced Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) mare Pizzazz, All That Pizzazz is a half-brother to Kaboom Kaboom (Smart Missile), who has placed once in three starts for trainer Brendan McShane. Spirit Of Boom is standing for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

 

Study Of Man – Lanwades Stud’s first-season sire Study Of Man (Deep Impact) was handed his first individual stakes winner when Deepone (2 c ex Avyanna by Galileo) landed the Beresford Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at the Curragh. A 62,000gns purchase for his trainer at Book 3 of last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Deepone is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Avya D’Or (Carpe Diem) being out of the unraced Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Avyanna, herself a half-sister to Listed winner Moments Of Joy (Darshaan). Study Of Man stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £12,500 (approx. AU$23,750) and has had 16 starters.

 

Territories – Territories (Invincible Spirit) earned his 12th individual stakes winner when Geologist (2 f ex Parknasilla by Dutch Art) won the Winterkonigin Trial at Cologne. The Amy Murphy-trained filly was a 35,000gns buy at last year’s Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale. Territories stood the 2023 northern hemisphere season for a fee of £10,000 (approx. AU$18,998) and has had 319 starters.

 

Twilight Son – Beautiful Diamond (2 f ex Babylon Lane by Lethal Force) became the ninth individual stakes winner for Cheveley Park Stud stallion Twilight Son (Kyllachy) when landing the Harry Rosebery Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Ayr. A £360,000 purchase for Blandford Bloodstock at this year’s Goffs UK Breeze-Ups Sale, Beautiful Diamond is a half-sister to winner Brazen Idol (Brazen Beau), being out of the Lethal Force (Dark Angel) mare Babylon Lane. Twilight Son stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £7,000 (approx. AU$13,290) and has had 225 starters.

 

Wootton Bassett – Coolmore’s shuttle stallion Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) was handed his 38th individual stakes winner when Quickstep (3 f ex Dance Toupie by Dansili) landed the Prix Coronation (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. Quickstep is out of the Dansili (Danehill) mare Dance Toupie, making her a sister to the Group-placed winner Dave and a half-sister to three winners including the stakes-placed winner Commander (War Command). Wootton Bassett, who stood the northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €150,000 (approx. AU$247,580), will stand the southern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of $93,500 (inc GST). He has had 437 starters.

 

Zoustar – Ozzmosis (3 c ex No More Tears by Darci Brahma) became the 41st individual stakes winner from 731 starters for Widden Stud’s flagship sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) when winning the Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill. Out of the Group 3-winning and Group 2-placed Darci Brahma (Danehill) mare No More Tears, Ozzmosis is a half-brother to Hughes (Russian Revolution), who has amassed two wins and two placed efforts from five starts for his trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr. Zoustar, who this year again shuttled to UK-based stud Tweenhills for the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of £30,000, is standing at Widden for a fee of $220,000 (inc GST).
