Stott steers KBL to pinhook result

Boutique Queensland farm KBL Thoroughbreds enjoyed a day in the sun at the Inglis Classic sale yesterday after a sterling bit of pinhooking with a daughter of Kermadec (Teofilo).

The 30-acre Beaudesert operation made some hay here last year when a daughter of Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) purchased for $12,000 as a weanling made $90,000.

But they went far better this time when a Kermadec filly bought at the Inglis Online sale last year for just $10,000 – after urging from the auction house’s bloodstock adviser Will Stott – reaped them $170,000, bought by West Australian Mike Pike.

As Stott explained, the filly was among 22 lots earmarked for sale last year in the Shadwell Park dispersal via Yarraman Park’s draft at the Gold Coast weanling sale. But when there was room there for just 20 weanlings, two were re-routed instead to the Inglis sale in June.

Kandice Pritchard – the K to partner Brad Lowe’s B in the five-year-old KBL operation – said Stott had been on the phone recommending the purchase.

“I’d asked Will to keep a lookout for us and he rang me and said, ‘Here’s one for you’,” Pritchard said.

“So we took a ten grand punt on her. But she did have a lovely walk, beautiful scope, and I just thought she might grow into something.”

Kermadec hadn’t done a great deal as a sire for Darley, prompting them to move him to their Victorian base. A few months after KBL’s purchase, Kermadec’s star offspring Montefilia claimed her third Group 1 in The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m). A couple of weeks after that, his filly Willowy won the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m).

“So things happened at the right time,” said Pritchard, whose farm runs some 13 mares. “And I just thought she’s just got a pedigree that would be of some interest to people, and especially at a Classic sale she’s going to stand out.”

The filly is the second foal of the city-winning Dawaa (Lonhro), a daughter of Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)-winning mare Rewaaya (Singspiel).

“So it’s great for a small farm like ours to have a win sometimes. And we’ve got to thank Will Stott and Inglis, who are always very helpful.”
