Supercilious makes a big first impression

Blake Shinn is confident that Supercilious (Written Tycoon) can work her way through the grades after she produced an impressive win in a 1300-metre fillies maiden at Sandown-Hillside on Wednesday.

The filly was making her third competitive appearance having run eighth in the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 2, 1100m) in February and was last seen running fifth in a 1000-metre contest at Sandown.

The Leon and Troy Corstens-trained filly defeated Savvyrocker (Shamus Award) by a length in Wednesday’s event with the Lindsay Park-trained Clean Reef (Lope De Vega) finishing another 1.3 lengths away in third.

“This time of year can get some good fillies, last year Coeur Volante come through a similar month and grade and beat me on Lady In Pink,” Shinn said. “So this type of race can throw up a good filly and I think she is.

“She’s quite a big filly, she’s got a bit of swagger about her, good character and you see when she lengthens that she’s got a great action and got good attributes that will get her to a better level.”

Purchased her trainers for $300,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2023 from the Newgate Farm draft, Supercilious is out of the Listed-winning Group 1-placed mare Golconda (Snitzel), making the filly a half-sister to Group 2 scorer Marine One (Capitalist) and Cannonball (Capitalist), who landed a Group 3 race and finished third in Group 1 company.

Golconda is out of Group 2 winner Eureka Jewel (Semipalatinsk), making her a half-sister to Listed scorer Sermon (Octagonal).

In winning Wednesday’s contest, Supercilious became Written Tycoon’s 17th Australian  two-year-old winner of the season and he is set to be crowned Australia’s champion juvenile sire at the end of the month.

Shinn banked his 100th Victorian winner of the season 35 minutes later when he steered the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Mighty (Spirit Of Boom) to victory in a Benchmark 70 (1000m), before adding further to his tally onboard Beast Mode (Better Than Ready) later in the afternoon.
