Superluminal (I Am Invincible) shed his maiden tag at the second time of asking when scoring in a 1400-metre maiden plate at Ballarat last Friday.
The Chris Waller-trained colt, who topped the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale when selling to Coolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier for a whopping $2.7 million, had run sixth on his debut in an 1100-metre event at Bendigo last month at odds of $13.
Ridden by Damian Lane on Friday in the colours of owners which include Coolmore, Westerberg and Woppitt Bloodstock, Superluminal stayed on strongly to defeat Shockletz (Shocking) by 1.5 lengths with Sir Kenny (Justify) coming home a further 0.2 lengths adrift in third.
“This horse was good today, he was able to bounce through his first run and improve,” the winning rider said.
“He’s progressive and took good benefit from his first run and if he does that again he can go on to a better level.”
Bred by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Superluminal is out of three-time Group 2 winner Anaheed (Fastnet Rock), who is herself a daughter of Group 1 winner Rostova (Testa Rossa).
Superluminal’s brother, now named All Star, was purchased by China Horse Club, Newgate, Go Bloodstock and Trilogy for $1.2 million at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year.
Having had a year off in 2022, Anaheed is in foal to Darley’s champion Anamoe (Street Boss).
