The well bred Supremo (Written Tycoon) got off the mark at the sixth attempt after the ultimate gear change which saw him return from a spell gelded.
A three-year-old that trainer John Thompson said has always shown ability, Supremo is out of Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Dizelle (Zabeel), making him a half-brother to VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Pinot (Pierro), as well as stakes winner Dizlago (Encosta De Lago) and the stakes-placed pair Lucky Lago (Encosta De Lago) and Rock Giselle (Fastnet Rock).
His dam herself is a half-sister to Hong Kong Horse of the Year Vengeance Of Rain (Zabeel), while his second dam is Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Danelagh (Danehill).
Ridden by Rachel King, Supremo was given a soft lead after breaking well in the 1300-metre contest, and after setting a steady tempo he kicked clear of the chasing pack to defeat the Chris Waller-trained pair Sur La Mer (Nicconi) and Black Queen (Mongolian Khan) to win by three lengths at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Supremo is bred by Aston Bloodstock’s Wilf Mula, who retains an interest in the horse after his $260,000 purchase by John Thompson at the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Sale when bought from the Newgate Farm draft.
“Beautiful, as I said before the race, he’s been a different horse this prep. He’s always shown that he has ability,” said Thompson. “He’s well bred by superman Wilf Mula out of an Oaks-winning mare that already has an Oaks winner, so he’s got a bit of a pedigree.”
“Different horse since he’s been gelded and he got a very soft lead there and the further the race went the more confident he got.
“He’s been going well and I’m sure he’s destined for better things.”
Dizelle has a weanling filly by Pierro (Lonhro), a full-sister to Pinot. The Group 1 winner was exported to Japan in December last year ahead of their breeding season.
