The Jamie Richards-trained Synchronize (Savabeel) made an impressive debut at Matamata on Wednesday, confirming the promise she showed in three prior trial wins.
The two-year-old filly was sent out a $1.50 favourite of the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden (1050m) and justified her price with a comfortable win under Danielle Johnson.
Positioned in fourth after a clean break, Synchronize was kept on the heels of the leaders before scooting clear in the final stages to win by a length and three-quarters from Show A Million (Showcasing). Funny Girl (Showcasing) was four lengths behind the winner in third.
In taking out the 1050-metre contest, Synchronize landed a Pearl Series bonus and provided Jamie Richards with his 20th two-year-old win of the season.
“She’s a filly we’ve held in high regard for a fair while,” Richards said. “She was unbeaten at the trials, but we’ve taken our time with her.
“We felt the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes was coming up a bit soon in February, so we freshened her and gave her a nice trial mid-March at Cambridge.
“It worked out well with her Pearl Series eligibility in winning the bonus and she was given a nice ride by Danielle. She attacked the line well, like a filly that’s got a promising future.”
Owned by the Te Akau Flexibeel Racing Partnership, Synchronize, who is from the same cross as last weekend’s Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Mo’unga (Savebeel), was a $280,000 purchase by David Ellis from the Waikato Stud draft at last year’s New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.
Although unraced, her dam Splits (O’Reilly) is a daughter of multiple Group 1 winner Legs (Pins) and sister to stakes winner Wolfwhistle.
Splits has produced four winners from as many runners to race. She is not represented by any yearlings at this year’s sales after missing to Savabeel (O’Reilly) in 2019, but produced a filly foal out of Ocean Park (Thorn Park) in 2020.
