Tangmere (NZ) 3 c Frankel – Our Echezeaux by Zabeel
The well-bred Frankel (Galileo) colt Tangmere opened his account at the third attempt with a decisive victory over 1400 metres at Randwick on Wednesday.
The Chris Waller-trained colt settled nicely in third place on the rails from his inside barrier in the early stages for jockey Kerrin McEvoy behind a steady pace.
He was blocked initially when straightening up for home and finished strongly along the inner when a split came at the 100 metres to win quite impressively by three quarters of a length from his stable companion Schoolmates (Redoute’s Choice).
A NZ$1,300,000 purchase at Karaka as a yearling the colt is one of six named foals out of the winning Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Our Echezeaux, herself a sister to Group One winner Grand Echezeaux who is the dam of Darci Brahma (Danehill) and Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice).
She is also a three-quarter sister to multiple Group Three winner Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram), whose progeny include the multiple Group One-winning champion mare Ethereal (Rhythm).
Tangmere is a half-brother to four winners, including the Group Two winner Dolmabache (Redoute’s Choice), Group Three winner Pure Elegance (Redoute’s Choice) and the Listed winner Cote D’Or (Makfi).
This is also the same family as South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Howard Be Thy Name (Redoute’s Choice), Group Two winner Bellini Rose (Faltaat) and dual Group Three-winning mare Eleonora (Makfi).
Tangmere’s sire Frankel has sired 20 stakes winners to date and he will stand the Northern Hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £175,000 at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Farm.
