Brave Smash – Yarraman Park’s Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) extended his lead by winners on the Australian first season sires’ title to three with six weeks of the racing year to run. Brave Smash’s tenth individual winner from 25 runners, the Kris Lees-trained Power Of The Brave (2 g ex More For Me,by More Than Ready), who was having his first start, defeated older rivals to land the 1150-metre maiden on the Beaumont course at Newcastle by a convincing one and three-quarter lengths. Bred by Aquis Farm, Power Of The Brave was purchased by Prime Thoroughbreds’ Joe O’Neill for $80,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. Brave Smash, who will stand for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST) at Yarraman Park in 2023, is the sire of Listed winner Brave Mead and the stakes-placed Kimochi and Brave Strike, as well as the late Group 1-performed Brave Halo.
Prized Icon – Kooringal Stud’s Prized Icon (More Than Ready) sired his first winner from six runners when Tropical Squall (2 f ex Squalls by Fusaichi Pegasus) made the perfect start to her racing career to score in the two-year-old fillies handicap (1250m) at Canterbury. Bred by New South Wales-based Kooringal Stud’s Lamont family, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Tropical Squall came away as the length-and-a-quarter winner on debut, leading from start to finish. The filly was purchased by Gooree Stud, which raced Prized Icon to win the 2016 ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), for $16,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft. Tropical Squall is the ninth foal out of winning mare Squalls, herself a daughter of dual Group 3-winning mare Blue Storm (Bluebird). Prized Icon stands at Kooringal Stud for a fee of $8,800 (inc GST) in 2023.
Sioux Nation – Archo Nacho (2 g ex Jackpot Queen by Not A Single Doubt) became the fourth southern hemisphere-bred winner from nine starters for former Swettenham Stud shuttler Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy) when his rider Ben Allen lodged a successful protest in an 1100-metre maiden at Werribee. Archo Nacho crossed the line a head behind Mansiere (Brave Smash), however the placings were later revised by stewards after it was found interference was suffered by the gelding. Out of the winning Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) mare Jackpot Queen, Archo Nacho is a half-brother to winners Star Galaxy (Star Witness), Arriba (Toorak Toff), Jackpot Legend (Nostradamus) and Big Red (Starcraft). Sioux Nation, who stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Castlehyde Stud for a fee of €17,500 (approx. AU$28,660), stood one season in Australia.
U S Navy Flag – Naval Anthem (2 g ex Smitten Kitten by Volksraad) became the seventh individual southern hemisphere-bred winner for The Oaks Stud stallion U S Navy Flag (War Front) when scoring in an 800-metre maiden two-year-old contest at Wanganui. Trained by Kurtis Pertab, Naval Anthem defeated Bodacious Kate (Derryn) by one and a half lengths. Naval Anthem is the ninth foal and eighth winner out of the two-time Listed winner Smitten Kitten. U S Navy Flag, who has had 22 runners in the southern hemisphere, will stand for a fee of $15,000 (plus GST) in 2023.
New Group / Grade 1 winners
Dark Angel – Khaadem (7 g ex White Daffodil by Footstepsinthesand) became the 14th individual elite-level winner for Yeomanstown Stud stallion Dark Angel (Acclamation) when recording a shock success in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot. The fifth foal out of the winning Footstepsinthesand (Giant’s Causeway) mare White Daffodil, Khaadem is a brother to Listed scorer Log Out. Dark Angel, who has had 1,377 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €60,000 (approx. AU$98,270).
Frankel – Juddmonte Farm stalwart Frankel (Galileo) sired three individual elite-level winners last week during a memorable Royal Ascot meeting. Triple Time (4 c ex Reem Three by Mark Of Esteem) became the 29th individual top-level winner for the son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) when running out a shock 33-1 winner of the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m). Carrying the colours of his breeder Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, Triple Time is closely related to Group 1 winner Ajman Princess (Teofilo), being the ninth foal out of the winning Mark Of Esteem (Darshaan) mare Reem Three. Mostahdaf (5 h ex Handassa by Dubawi) then became the 30th individual Group 1 winner for his sire when he stormed to an impressive success in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f). The fifth foal out of the Listed-winning Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare Handassa, herself a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Desert Stone (Fastnet Rock), Mostahdaf is a half-brother to Group 1 scorer Nazeef (Invincible Spirit). Frankel’s final Group 1 winner last week came when the John and Thady Gosden-trained Courage Mon Ami (4 g ex Crimson Ribbon by Lemon Drop Kid) came out on top in a thrilling finish to the Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m 4f) under Frankie Dettori, taking the sire’s elite-level number to 31 and stakes winner number to 122. Courage Mon Ami is closely related to the 2017 Randwick City Stakes (Listed, 2000m) winner Astronomos (New Approach), fellow Listed scorer Crimson Rosette (Teofilo) and the Listed-placed winner Purple Ribbon (Gleneagles), being out of the winning Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo) mare Crimson Ribbon, herself a sister to Group 2 winner Bronze Cannon. Frankel, who has had 722 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £275,000 (approx. AU$524,720).
So You Think – Coolmore Stud resident So You Think (High Chaparral) earned his 11th individual Group 1 winner as the Chris Munce-trained Palaisipan (5 m ex Touch Of Red by Fastnet Rock) took out the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm. Purchased by her trainer for $40,000 at the Magic Millions Gooree Stud Reduction Sale after the passing of Eduardo Cojuangco, Palaisipan is out of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Touch Of Red, an unraced three-quarter sister to Group 2 winner turned Twin Hills Stud-based sire Smart Missile. Palaisipan won the race in the colours of Katsumi Yoshida, who purchased the mare after her fourth place finish in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) on June 10. So You Think, who has had 1,213 starters, will stand the upcoming breeding season for a fee of $99,000 (inc GST).

Australia – Waipiro (3 c ex London Plane by Danehill Dancer) provided his sire Australia (Galileo) with a 34th individual stakes winner when landing the Hampton Court Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f) at Royal Ascot. The fifth foal out of the Danehill Dancer (Danehill) mare London Plane, Waipiro is closely related to winner Dancing Rebel (Highland Reel) and is a half-brother to three-time Hong Kong Group 1 scorer Waikuku (Harbour Watch). Australia, who has had 476 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore Stud for a fee of €25,000 (approx. AU$40,570).
Blue Point – Darley shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal) sired his first stakes winner when Big Evs (2 c ex Hana Lina by Oasis Dream) produced a shock 150-1 success in the Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Royal Ascot. Big Evs was a 50,000gns buy for Michael Cleere from Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. He is the sixth foal and fourth winner out of the Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Hana Lina, herself a half-sister to dual Group 2 winner Lady Of The Desert (Rahy) and a daughter of the unbeaten Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) and Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) winner Queen’s Logic (Grand Lodge). Blue Point, who stands for a fee of €35,000 (approx. AU$56,555) at Kildangan Stud in Ireland, will again shuttle to Darley’s Northwood Park Stud in Victoria, where he commands a fee of $44,000 (inc GST). He has had 45 starters.
El Kabeir – Budrio (3 c ex Bryzyna by Sinndar) became the sixth individual stakes winner for his sire El Kabeir (Scat Daddy) when scoring in the Gran Premio D’Italia (Listed, 2400m) at Milan. Out of the unraced Sinndar (Grand Lodge) mare Bryzyna, Budrio is a half-brother to winner Doesn’t Make Sense (Excelebration). El Kabeir, who has had 141 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Allevamenti della Berardenga for €6,000 (approx. AU$9,800).
Expert Eye – Juddmonte stallion Expert Eye (Acclamation) sired his first stakes winner on arguably the biggest stage of all when Snellen (2 f ex Illumined by Sea The Moon) edged out favourite Pearls And Rubies (No Nay Never) in a tight finish to the Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Royal Ascot. Carrying the colours of her breeder Lindsay Laroche, Snellen is the first foal out of the winning Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars) mare Illumined, who is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Night Lagoon (Lagunas), the dam of King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Novellist (Monsun), and also to Night Tango (Acatenango), who finished second in the German Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2005. Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) winner Expert Eye, who has had 99 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £7,500 (approx. AU$14,280).
Frankel – Juddmonte Farm’s stalwart Frankel also sired his 123rd stakes winner when Voodoo Queen (4 f ex Cursory Glance by Distorted Humor) scored in the Pontefract Castle Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f). The third foal out of the Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) winner Cursory Glance (Distorted Humor), herself out of a winning sister to Group 2 scorer Time On (Sadler’s Wells), Voodoo Queen is a half-sister to the Listed winner Tinker Toy (War Front).
Golden Horn – El Caney (5 h ex Kitty Wells by Sadler’s Wells) made a first step into stakes company a winning one as the five-year-old took out the Gran Premio de Madrid (Listed, 2500m) in Spain’s capital. He became the 17th individual stakes winner for Golden Horn (Cape Cross). Bred in the UK, he was a 35,000gns Tattersalls Book 1 purchase and is a full-brother to the Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 5f) runner-up Rodrigo Diaz, out of a winning full-sister to the St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f) winner and sire Milan (Sadler’s Wells). Golden Horn stood his first seven seasons at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud, but was sold to Dash Grange Stud as a dual-purpose prospect and spent the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Overbury Stud for a fee of £8,000 (approx. AU$15,260).
I Am Invincible – Yarraman Park’s champion sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) chalked up his 96 individual stakes winner from 1,034 starters when Zoukerette (2 f ex Walk With Attitude by Hussonet) took out the Tattersall’s Life Members Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Eagle Farm. Zoukerette was bought by her trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and Suman Hedge Bloodstock for $800,000 from the draft of her breeders Milburn Creek at the the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2022. The filly is one of five winners out of Listed-winning mare Walk With Attitude (Hussonet), who is also the dam of Listed scorer Zoukerino (Snitzel). I Am Invincible is on track to land his second successive champion sire title. He will stand for a fee of $302,500 (inc GST) in 2023, up from the $247,500 (inc GST) he stood for in 2022.
Iffraaj – Former Haunui Farm shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic) was handed his 94th individual stakes winner courtesy of Luncies’ (6 g ex Under The Rainbow by Fantastic Light) win in the Tattersall’s Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Eagle Farm. Trained by Kris Lees and raced by Australian Bloodstock, Luncies is one of four winners and the first stakes scorer out of the English Listed winner Under The Rainbow (Fantastic Light). Iffraaj has been represented by 1,840 runners and he shuttled to New Zealand for 12 seasons, but did not return in 2020. The stallion now stands at Darley’s Dalham Hall base where his fee for the 2023 season was £15,000 (approx. AU$28,555).
Kendargent – Alpenblume (4 f ex Alwilda by Hernando) provided her sire Kendargent (Kendor) with a 40th individual stakes winner when landing the Holstein Cup (Listed, 2200m) at Hamburg. Trained by Chantilly-based Tim Donworth and bred and owned by Miss Kirsten Rausing, Alpenblume is a half-sister to last year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) heroine Alpinista (Frankel) being the second foal out of the Listed-winning Hernando (Niniski) mare Alwilda, herself a half-sister to Group 3 scorer Algometer (Archipenko) and to Listed winners All At Sea (Sea The Stars) and Alignak (Sea The Moon) being out of Rausing’s three-time Group 1-winning mare Albanova (Alzao). Kendargent, who has had 672 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras de Colleville for a fee of €17,000 (approx. AU$27,750).
Kingman – Age Of Kings (3 c ex Turret Rocks by Fastnet Rock) became the 65th individual stakes winner for Kingman (Invincible Spirit) when getting the better of a number of more fancied rivals to take out the Jersey Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Royal Ascot. A 1.1 million guineas buy out of Book 1 at Tattersalls, Age Of Kings is the first foal out of Group 2 winner Turret Rocks (Fastnet Rock), who herself is a half-sister to Beyond Thankful (Whipper), winner of the 2015 Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) for Chris Waller. Kingman, who has had 552 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Juddmonte for a fee of £125,000 (approx. AU$237,980).
Malibu Moon – Valiant Force (2 c ex Vigui’s Heart by Quality Road) became the 136th individual stakes winner for the late Malibu Moon (A.P. Indy) when causing a huge 150-1 shock in the Norfolk Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Royal Ascot. A US$100,000 purchase for Robson Aguiar and Roger O’Callaghan, who own the colt in partnership with Amo Racing – in whose colours he runs – at last year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Valiant Force is the first foal out of the unraced Quality Road (Elusive Quality) mare Vigui’s Heart. Malibu Moon, who has had 1,764 starters, died in 2021 at the age of 24.
Maurice – In winning the Tatt’s Gold Crown (Listed, 2137m) at Eagle Farm, the Les Kelly-trained Noah ‘N’ A Deel (3 f ex Double Deel by Dundeel) provided Arrowfield Stud shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero) with his 16th stakes winner. The three-year-old filly was purchased by Waverley Park Lodge from the Arrowfield Stud draft for $100,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2021. She is the only winner out of unraced Dundeel (High Chaparral) mare Double Deel, a daughter of Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed mare Aliyana Tilde (Snitzel). In winning the Listed contest, Noah ‘N’ A Deel also becomes the first stakes winner for Dundeel as a broodmare sire. Maurice has been represented by 562 runners and he will stand the upcoming breeding season for a fee of $82,500 (inc GST).
Night Of Thunder – Arabian Legend (3 c ex Arabescatta by Monsun) became the 35th individual stakes winner for Kildangan Stud stallion Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) when landing the Premio Estate (Listed, 1600m) at Milan. The seventh foal out of the winning Monsun (Konigsstuhl) mare Arabescatta, herself a half-sister to Group 1 scorer Coronet (Dubawi), Arabian Legend is closely related to winner Bay Dream Believer (New Bay) and a half-brother to four other winners including Battle Angel (Iffraaj) and Plage Depampelonne (Redoute’s Choice). Night Of Thunder, who has had 329 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €100,000 (approx. AU$163,360).
Paco Boy – Captain Chorus (5 g ex Sea Chorus by Singspiel) defied his odds to land the Oslo Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Ovrevoll and became the 15th individual stakes winner for former Waikato Stud shuttler Paco Boy (Desert Style), who now stands in Turkey. He was a £10,000 Tattersalls Ascot yearling purchase and is a half-brother to the Scandinavian Listed scorer Seaside Song (Harbour Watch) and the Listed-placed Sea Race (Charm Spirit). They are out of a winning Singspiel (In The Wings) half-sister to the Group 1 winner and sire Soldier Hollow (In The Wings). Paco Boy has had 416 starters.]
Redwood – Tuchel (4 g ex Trista Rossa by Testa Rossa) became the 14th individual stakes winner for Westbury Stud stallion Redwood (High Chaparral) when he landed the Premier Plate (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sha Tin. Out of the winning Testa Rossa (Perugino) mare Trista Rossa, Tuchel is a half-brother to winners Morpheus (Snitzel) and Goldsborough (Headwater). Redwood, who has had 312 starters, will stand the upcoming southern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of $10,000 (+ GST).
Wootton Bassett – Coolmore’s Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) sired his 33rd and 34th individual stakes winners last week, and first winners at Royal Ascot. River Tiber (2 c ex Transcendence by Arcano) stretched his unbeaten record to three with a victory in the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f), the sire’s first stakes winner of the week. A 480,000gns purchase out of Book 1 at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, River Tiber is the the second foal out of the unraced Transcendence (Arcano), herself a half-sister to the stakes-winning siblings Mister Manannan (Desert Style) and Shermeen (Desert Style), the latter the dam of Group 1 winner Sudirman (Henrythenavigator). Wootton Bassett’s 34th individual stakes winner arrived when Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) runner-up King Of Steel (3 c ex Eldacar by Verglas) landed the King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f) at Royal Ascot just 20 days earlier on from his Epsom effort, his first start back from 224 days off the track. A US$200,000 purchase for his owners Amo Racing at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, King Of Steel is the third foal out of the winning Verglas (Highest Honor) mare Eldacar, herself a sister to Group-placed winner Miss Crissy. Wootton Bassett, who has had 411 starters, will stand the upcoming southern hemisphere breeding season at Jerrys Plains for a fee of $93,500 (inc GST).
