Mizzen Mast – Ciaron Maher and David Eustace bagged yet another top-flight winner when Lighthouse (5 m ex More Hoping by North Light) won the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday. Providing jockey Jason Collett with the second leg of a feature-race double, the five-year-old mare beat Mirra Vision (Lonhro) by two lengths with a further short-head back to Hinged (Worthy Cause) in third. Lighthouse’s success also provided her sire Mizzen Mast (Cozzene) with a tenth top-flight success as a sire. She is the best of two winners from four to race out of the North Light (Danehill) mare More Hoping.
Per Incanto – The Michael Moroney-trained Roch ‘N’ Horse (5 m ex Rochfort by Cecconi) caused a huge upset in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on Saturday to provide his sire Per Incanto (Street Cry) with a fifth individual top-flight stakes success. Ridden by Patrick Moloney, the five-year-old went off the $101 outsider of the 17-runner field but always looked in control 200 metres from home and scored by just under a length from The Astrologist (Zoustar) with a further neck back to September Run (Exceed And Excel) in third. One of 23 stakes winners by Per Incanto, Roch ‘N’ Horse joins Shadows Cast, Dal Cielo, Santa Monica and Bonham as the stallion’s other top-flight scorers. He stood for a fee of $25,000 (plus GST) last season.
Turn Me Loose (pictured above) – Windsor Park Stud’s Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj) sired his first elite-level winner when Lickety Split (2 f ex She’s Slinky by Handsome Ransom) upstaged her more fancied rivals in Sunday’s Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie. Trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman , Lickety Split made it two wins in as many starts as she held off the challenge of the Jamie Richards-trained Te Akau stablemates Dynastic (Almanzor) and Maven Belle (Burgundy), who were a nose and a head behind in a blanket finish. Lickety Split is raced by a syndicate which includes the filly’s breeders, Wentwood Grange’s Dean Hawkins and Windsor Park’s nominations manager Nick Hewson. She is a daughter of the Listed-placed mare She’s Slinky (Handsome Ransom), a $7,000 buy at the 2016 NZB Mixed Winter Sale who has produced three foals to race for two winners. She has a yearling filly by Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) and is in foal to Windsor Park’s first-season shuttler Circus Maximus (Galileo). Turn Me Loose stood for a fee of $15,000 (plus GST) last year.
New stakes winners
American Pharoah – The Chris Waller-trained Pretty Amazing (3 f ex Pretty Penny by Encosta De Lago) booked her slot in the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) when coming home with a strong late run to win the Kembla Grange Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) at Goulburn on Friday. The three-year-old filly came from the tail of the field to overhaul Hope In Your Heart (Dundeel) by a length with a further half-length back to Gin Martini (Rip Van Winkle). The success was Pretty Amazing’s third consecutive win after breaking her maiden on her second start before going on to dominate the field over 1550 metres at Canterbury on February 18. Pretty Amazing is the fifth stakes winner and eighth stakes horse from as many foals to come out of blue hen Pretty Penny (Encosta De Lago), a half-sister to Group winners and Group 1 placegetters Sertorius (Galileo), Pretty Brazen (Brazen Beau), Dollar for Dollar (High Chaparral) and Clifton Red (Sebring). The win also provided Coolmore stallion American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) with a 25th individual stakes winner and second in Australia. He stands for a fee of $80,000 (inc. GST).
Awesome Rock – Rokanori (3 c ex Nishikawa by Fuji Kiseki) provided her sire Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock) with a second individual stakes winner when she scored in the J.C. Roberts Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Ascot. The Grant Williams-trained three-year-old upset the odds-on favourite Trix Of The Trade (Trade Fair), who was bidding for a sixth consecutive victory, to win by a neck with a further length and a quarter back to Henchard (Blackfriars) in third. Out of the winning Fuji Kiseki (Sunday Silence) mare Nishikawa, Rokanori is a half-sister to the 2013 WA Breeders’ Classic (Listed, 1400m) winner Takanori (Vital Equine). Awesome Rock stood at Gold Front Thoroughbred Breeding and Racing in 2021 for $5,000 (inc. GST).
Dubawi – Dubawi’s (Dubai Millennium) recent run of stakes winners continued when Agave (3 f ex Contribution by Champs Elysees) took out the Prix Rose de Mai (Listed, 2000m) at Saint-Cloud on Thursday to become the 226th individual stakes winner for Darley’s sire sensation. Trained by Andre Fabre, the three-year-old maintained her 100 per cent record as she beat Ondulee (Adlerflug) by three lengths. Anne De Cleves (Wootton Bassett) was another neck away in third. The Juddmonte homebred is the second foal out of the Group-placed winner Contribution (Champs Elysees), who herself is closely related to a half-sister of the great Enable (Nathaniel). Dubawi stands at Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £250,000 (approx. AU$447,000).
Extreme Choice – She’s Extreme (2 f ex Keysbrook by So Secret) provided her Newgate Farm-based sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) with a seventh individual stakes winner when she landed the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The Anthony Cummings-trained two-year-old beat Magic Carpet (Lonhro) by one and a half lengths with a further two lengths back to Swift Sweet (Snitzel) in third. Out of the Grade 2-placed winning So Secret (Danetime) mare Keysbrook, She’s Extreme is a half-sister to the maiden winner Ruru (So You Think). Extreme Choice stood at the New South Wales-based nursery for a private fee.
Jackalberry – Uareastar (5 m ex Enchanteress by Danehill) became the third individual stakes winner for former Novara Park stallion Jakkalberry (Storming Home) when taking out Sunday’s Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) at Ellerslie. After jumping from barrier 16, Uareastar raced back with cover under a calculated ride from apprentice Wiremu Pinn before shooting three lengths clear rounding the home turn on her way to a game victory over Concert Hall (Savabeel) by a neck with Sound (Lando) a length back in third. Bred by Dan Myers, Uareastar is out of the Danehill (Danzig) mare Enchanteress and has now won six of her 15 starts and over $387,000 in prize-money. Jakkalberry died in 2018 after standing just four seasons at stud in New Zealand.
Lord Kanaloa – Lord Kanaloa (King Kamehameha) sired his 34th individual stakes winner when his daughter Sublime Anthem (3 f ex Pastophoria by Symboli Kris S) emerged a narrow winner of the Hochi Hai Fillies’ Revue (Gr 2, 1400m) at Hanshin on Sunday. Trained by Hideaki Fujiwara, the three-year-old followed up her maiden win at Chukyo last month as she got the better of favourite Namura Clair (Mikki Isle) by a head. Anegohada (Kizuna) finished two lengths behind the winner in third. Sublime Anthem is out of the winning mare Pastophoria (Symboli Kris S), herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Cecchino (King Kamehameha) and Group 3 scorer Codino (King Kamehameha). Lord Kanaloa stands at Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of ¥15,000,000 (approx. AU$175,365).
Myboycharlie – Former shuttler Myboycharlie (Danetime) sired his 24th individual stakes winner when Machete (3 c ex Maid To Believe by Galileo) made it back-to-back wins on an artificial surface with a two-length victory in the Prix Maurice Caillault (Listed, 1800m) at Chantilly. The Fabrice Chappet-trained three-year-old beat Implementation (Constitution) with Fighter In The Win (Creative Cause) a short neck behind the runner-up in third. A €52,000 purchase as a yearling, Machete is the seventh foal out of the Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Maid To Believe, making him a half-brother to the Group 3-placed winner Maid To Remember (Redoute’s Choice). Myboycharlie now stands at stud in Turkey.
Nyquist – The progressive Scalding (4 h ex Hot Water by Medaglia D’Oro) continued his winning run when he struck in the Challenger Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday night and in the process became the eighth individual stakes winner for Darley stallion Nyquist (Uncle Mo). Stepping up into graded company off the back of a win in an optional claimer, the Shug McGaughey-trained four-year-old proved to be too hot for his six rivals as he defeated favourite Cody’s Wish (Curlin) by a neck, the front two pulling clear of the remainder who were led home by Dynamic One (Union Rags). Scalding is the first Graded winner out of the unraced mare Hot Water (Medaglia D’Oro), who has produced four winners from five starters. She is also the dam of the black-type winner Tracksmith (Street Sense). She has an unraced Runhappy (Super Saver) two-year-old colt named Runhappy D’Oro and an unnamed yearling filly by Omaha Beach (War Front). She was bred to War Of Will (War Front) for 2022. Scalding was a US$400,000 purchase at the 2019 edition of the Saratoga Sale. Nyquist stands at Darley for a fee of US$55,000 (approx. AU$74,415).
Orfevre – Kurino Premium (5 m ex Dancing Queen by Giant’s Causeway) provided her sire Orfevre (Stay Gold) with his 19th individual stakes winner when she caused an upset to score in the Laurel R C Sho Nakayama Himba Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Nakayama. The Shinichi Ito-trained five-year-old went on to beat Ablaze (Kizuna) by half a length, with favourite Miss New York (King’s Best) a further neck back in third. Kurino Premium is out of the winning Giant’s Causeway (Storm Cat) mare Dancing Queen, herself a sister to the dam of the Grade 3 winner Donegal Moon (Malibu Moon), a granddaughter of US champion mare and Grade 1 winner Possibly Perfect (Northern Baby). Orfevre stands at Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of ¥3,500,000 (approx. AU$40,920).
Russian Revolution – The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Rise Of The Masses (2 c ex Ruud Awakening by Bernardini) entered the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) picture when he took out the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday, providing Newgate Farm stallion Russian Revolution (Snitzel) with a second individual stakes winner. The two-year-old colt repelled the challenge of Sweet Ride (Deep Field) by a half-length with a further one and a quarter lengths back to Magic (Snitzel) in third. A homebred for Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, Rise Of The Masses is the second foal and second winner out of Group 1 winner Ruud Awakening (Bernardini). A half-brother to Rise Of The Masses by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) is set to be sold at next month’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale catalogued as Lot 393. Russian Revolution stood for a fee of $44,000 (inc. GST) in 2021.
Shamus Award – Irish Songs (6 g ex Lucky Songs by Johar) became the 18th individual stakes winner for Rosemont Stud-based sire Shamus Award (Snitzel) after he successfully navigated a wide barrier in Sunday’s National Sprint (Listed, 1400m) at Canberra. Irish Songs went on to win by half a length ahead of Ashman (Magnus), with Mas As Zariz (Zariz) the same margin away in third. The victory was the first time Irish Songs had scored since winning the Wagga Town Plate (1200m) in 2020, while his record stands at six wins from 44 starts after his $140,000 purchase by Goldman at the 2017 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale from the Attunga Stud draft. Irish Songs is the only winner out of the Johar (Gone West) mare Lucky Songs, a half-sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1 runner-up Captain Fantastic (Fantastic Light).
Street Sense – Jonabell Farm resident Street Sense (Street Cry) sired his 85th individual stakes winner when Heaven Street (3 c ex Heavenly View by Congrats) bounced back to form to score in the Columbia Stakes (Listed, 8f) on the Tampa turf on Saturday. Trained by Christophe Clement, Heaven Street was winning for the third time in seven starts as he came home a length clear of Bens Malice (Palace Malice). Fort Washington (War Front) finished a length and three-quarters behind the winner in third. Heaven Street is the second foal out of Heavenly View (Congrats), herself a half-sister to US Grade 2 winner Mr Freeze (To Honor And Serve). Street Sense stands for a fee of US$75,000 (approx. AU$102,850).
Tavistock – Ruthless Dame (2 f ex Ruthless Lady by Keeper) registered a first stakes success when she won the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained two-year-old held off the challenge of favourite Nanagui (Sebring) well in the closing stages to win by a quarter-length with Mumbai Jewel (I Am Invincible) a further neck behind in third. The victory provided late Cambridge Stud stallion Tavistock (Montjeu) with a 35th individual stakes success. Bred by Go Bloodstock, Ruthless Dame was a $90,000 purchase by Ciaron Maher Racing from the Curraghmore draft at Book 1 of the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale last year. The filly is the second winner from as many to race out of the stakes-placed Keeper (Danehill) mare Ruthless Lady.
Toronado – Shelby Sixtysix (5 g ex Storm Kite by Honours List) handed Swettenham Stud shuttler Toronado (High Chaparral) with a 24th individual stakes winner when he landed the Maurice McCarten (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill. The Danny Williams-trained five-year-old backed up his second to Eduardo (Host) in the Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) to score a cosy one and a quarter length victory over Rule Of Law (Snitzel) with a further three-quarters of a length back to Gravina (Sebring) in third. A $150,000 purchase for the trainer and Astute Bloodstock at the 2018 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Shelby Sixtysix is out of the winning Honours List (Danehill) mare Storm Kite and is a half-brother to a filly by Territories (Invincible Spirit).
War Front – The Claiborne Farm-based sire War Front (Danzig) was handed his 103rd individual stakes winner courtesy of Tinker Toy’s (6 g ex Cursory Glance – Distorted Humor) victory in the Lady Wulfruna Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Wolverhampton on Saturday. The Roger Varian-trained gelding defeated Happy Power (Dark Angel) by three-quarters of a length. Misty Grey was a further head away in third. The gelding is the only winner out of the Group 1 winner Cursory Glance (Distorted Humor) and she herself is a half-sister to Willow View (Lemon Drop Kid), the dam of Grade 1 scorer Digital Age (Invincible Spirit). Further back the gelding hails from the same family 2019 Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Chief Ironside (Lawman). War Front stands for a fee of $100,000 (approx. AU$137,150).
Zelzal – Dolce Zel (3 f ex Dolce Attesa by Dr Fong) made an immediate impression on her first start in the US when she struck in Saturday’s Florida Oaks (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Tampa Bay. Formerly trained in France, the filly was having her first start for Chad Brown as she edged out favourite Spicer (Quality Road) by a head. On Alert (Medaglia D’Oro) finished third, another length and a half away. In winning, Dolce Zel became the third individual stakes winner for Group 1 winner Zelzal (Sea The Stars). She is out of the unraced Dr Fong (Kris S) mare Dolce Attesa, who has produced five winners from five foals to race. Dolce Zel is a half-sister to the Group-placed Pure Zen (Zoffany) and to an unraced two-year-old filly by Shalaa (Invincible Spirit). Zelzal stands at Haras de Bouquetot for €15,000 (approx. AU$22,450).
