The Godolphin-raced Masar (2 c New Approach – Khawlah by Cape Cross) showcased his Classic credentials when running out a decisive winner of the Solario Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Sandown on Saturday.
The promising Charlie Appleby-trained colt was third in the Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Royal Ascot when last sighted and travelled strongly into contention under jockey James Doyle.
He quickened up smartly approaching the final furlong and stretched clear to beat Romanised (Holy Roman Emperor) by two lengths with Arbalet (Dark Angel) a further length and a quarter behind in third.
The colt is now rated a general 20/1 shot for next year’s 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and a 25/1 chance for the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f).
Appleby enjoyed further stakes success with his two-year-olds last weekend when Stage Magic (2 c Dark Angel – Witnessed by Authorized) upstaged a well-touted rival to win the Prix des Chenes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Chantilly on Sunday.
The Godolphin colt set steady fractions on the front end and battled on gamely to fend off Olmedo (Declaration Of War), who French champion trainer Jean-Claude Rouget has hailed as the best two-year-old in his yard, by a short-head with Zyzzyva (Siyouni) a further neck behind in third.
Stage Magic could head to the Royal Lodge Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Newmarket next up on 30 September.
Soustraction (2 f Lope De Vega – Mathematicienne by Galileo) ran out a comfortable winner of the Prix d’Aumale (Gr 3, 1600m) at Chantilly on Sunday.
The Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained filly quickened clear inside the final 200 metres to beat the odds-on favourite Efaadah (Dansili) by a length, with Wild Illusion (Dubawi) a head further behind in third.
Soustraction is from the family of 2012 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Solemia (Poliglote).
The Christophe Ferland-trained Rimini (2 c Elusive City – Kelty In Love by Keltos) took out the Prix d’Arenberg (Gr 3, 1000m) at Chantilly on the same afternoon.
The colt led approaching the 200 metres and ran on gamely to deny the Charlie Appleby-trained favourite Sound And Silence (Exceed And Excel) by half a length, with Over Reacted (Planteur) a further head behind in third.
In Germany, the Markus Klug-trained Narella (2 f Reliable – Man Naomia by Monsun) took out the Zukunftsrennen (Gr 3, 1400m) at Baden-Baden on Sunday.
The filly is now unbeaten in two career starts, having broken her maiden on debut at Cologne in July, and she beat Auenperle (Areion) a shade comfortably by two lengths with a further four lengths back to Julio (Exceed And Excel) in third.
Narella’s success gave Westbury Stud shuttle sire Reliable Man (Dalakhani) his first stakes winner.
The well-bred Mission Impassible (2 f Galileo – Margot Did by Exceed and Excel) won the Criterium de l’Ouest (Listed, 1650m) at Craon in France on Saturday.
The filly, who is the first foal out of 2011 Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) winner Margot Did (Exceed And Excel), has now won three of her four starts and beat Altea (Siyouni) by three lengths, with Fatale Bere (Pedro The Great) a further length behind in third place.
Three-Year-Olds
The Peter Schiergen-trained Ashiana (3 f Mastercraftsman – Ashantee by Areion) won the Zastrow Stutenpreis (Gr 2, 2400m) at Baden-Baden on Saturday afternoon.
The three-year-old filly, who was beaten just over a length into fifth in the Preis der Diana (German Oaks) (Gr 1, 2200m) at her last start, was held up and outpaced around 600 metres from home before she began to pick up for Andrasch Starke.
She stormed home in the closing stages to collar Diana Storm (Soldier Hollow) by half a length with Erica (Mamool) a further length and a quarter behind in third place.
The progressive Ashiana has now won three stakes races this season and looks likely to step back up into Group One company at her next outing
The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Leshlaa (3 c Street Cry – Vine Street by Singspiel) won the valuable Anatolia Trophy (TUR Gr 2, 1600m) at Veliefendi in Istanbul on Saturday.
The three-year-old colt was slowly away under Jimmy Quinn and pushed along to keep tabs on the leaders on the approach to the home straight.
Once levelling out for home, he picked up strongly and went clear in the closing stages to beat Cerastes (Always A Classic) by a length and a half with fellow British raider Absolute Blast (Kodiac) a further length back in third.
The Andreas Wöhler-trained Shy Angel (3 f Zamindar – Shy Lady by Kaldoun) appreciated the step down in class when she landed the Berenberg Cup (Listed, 1800m) at Baden-Baden on Sunday.
The three-year-old filly, who is a half-sister to the 2003 St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) winner Zafeen (Zafonic), had most recently been seen running 15th of 16 runners in the Preis der Diana (German Oaks) (Gr 1, 2200m) at Dusseldorf last month.
She showed a good attitude in a tactical race under Eduardo Pedroza, beating Margie’s Music (Hurricane Run) by a neck with just a head back to Guiliana (Zoffany) in third place.
Older Horses
The Jean-Pierre Carvalho-trained Guignol (5 h Cape Cross – Guadalupe by Monsun) landed his second career Group One on Sunday when he took took out the Grosser Preis Von Baden (Gr 1, 2400m) at Baden-Baden.
The five-year-old entire’s first victory at the highest level came when he won the Grosser Preis von Bayern (Gr 1, 2400m) last November and, he was allowed to dictate at a steady tempo on the front end under Filip Minarik.
He steadily increased the tempo on the approach to the straight and, having moved clear at the 300 metres, he never looked like being caught, scoring a two and a half length victory over Iquitos (Adlerflug) with another short-head back to Colomano (Cacique) in third.
Guignol could head to Chantilly next up for a tilt at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) on 1 October.
German raider Wonnemond (4 g Areion – Windaja by Surako) swooped from the tail of the field to win the Topkapi Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) at Veliefendi in Istanbul on Sunday.
The Sascha Smrczek-trained four-year-old was dropped out in rear by jockey Daniele Porcu as the locally-tained Copperfield (Three Valleys) set strong fractions on the front end.
The Saeed Bin Suroor-trained and Godolphin-raced Dream Castle (Frankel) led approaching the final 200 metres under Gerald Mosse, but Wonnemond stormed down the outside to collar that rival in the last strides to win by a length, with Yildirimbey (Sabirli) a further two lengths behind in third.
The Godolphin-raced Secret Number (7 g Raven’s Pass – Mysterial by Alleged) made a winning return to action in the Bosphorus Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) at Veliefendi in Istanbul the same day.
The Saeed Bin Suroor-trained seven-year-old had been off the track since running seventh in the Zipping Classic (Gr 2, 2400m) at Sandown Hillside in November, and he raced keenly in the early stages for Gerald Mosse.
He travelled strongly into contention at the top of the straight and quickened clear for a comfortable victory, beating Elbereth (Mount Nelson) by two lengths, with the locally-trained Victory Is Ours (Victory Gallop) a further neck behind in third.
Aljazzi (4 f Shamardal – Nouriya by Danehill Dancer) quickened up impressively from off the pace to win the Atalanta Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) in clearcut fashion at Sandown on Saturday.
The Marco Botti-trained filly, a dual Listed winner who was second in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Royal Ascot at her last start, was dropped out in rear in the early stages by jockey Andrea Atzeni.
She travelled smoothly into a challenging position and stretched clear inside the final furlong to beat Nathra (Iffraaj) by three lengths, with Tisbutadream (Dream Ahead) a further length and a half behind in third place.
