‘They would be exciting additions to any broodmare band’
Buyers in the southern hemisphere will be afforded a rare opportunity on Thursday when eight mares in foal to Darley’s sire sensation and Australia’s reigning champion first-season sire Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) on southern hemisphere time sell on the Tattersalls Online platform in collaboration with Inglis Digital.
“It’s exciting this is the inaugural collaboration between Tattersalls and Inglis and it’s a great opportunity to be able to build on and develop hopefully into the future,” Tattersalls Online sales manager Katherine Sheridan told ANZ Bloodstock News.
Too Darn Hot has taken all before him at stud, and his 17 global stakes winners are headed by Group 1-winning trio Fallen Angel, Hotazhell and dual Australian two-year-old Group 1 winner Broadsiding, who advertised his talents as a three-year-old with a victory in the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), while he also finished a solid third behind Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) in her record-breaking Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).
Broadsiding headlines 28 winners and five stakes southern hemisphere-bred winners for Too Darn Hot, whose progeny have become even more sought after in Australia given that Darley and Watership Down Stud decided to rest the son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) in 2024.
Such is his dominance and extraordinary talent in the breeding shed, Too Darn Hot had been originally touted to stand his fifth season at Kelvinside for $110,000 (inc GST), which would have placed him as the seventh-highest advertised stallion standing in the country.
However, Australasian breeders were afforded access to him after it was announced he was open for a limited book of southern hemisphere covers, and it didn’t take long for many to jump at the opportunity, with the stallion eventually covering 58 mares from his Dalham Hall base in Newmarket.
“The success of Too Darn Hot needs no introduction, with him being the champion first-season sire in both hemispheres and leading his peers with his second crop earnings,” said Sheridan. “With the stallion not going back to Australia, cash in on that opportunity and it will be beneficial to the market because it creates these international channels of trade.
“The stallion has an impressive amount of stakes winners in both hemispheres, headlined obviously by Broadsiding in Australia and the likes of Fallen Angel and Hotazhell up here.
“This offering of mares has been specifically selected for the southern hemisphere market. The collaboration is certainly something we want to draw on here, because that unique relationship shared with Tattersalls and Inglis has allowed this to come to fruition.”
The octet of mares offered in foal to Too Darn Hot are headed by dual Group 3-placed Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Know Thyself (Lot 6). A two-time winner, the mare was Group and Listed placed on four occasions, including when runner-up in the Prix Vanteaux (Gr 3, 1800m) behind subsequent Group 1 star Mqse De Sevigne (Siyouni).
Offered by Hazelwood Bloodstock, Know Thyself, who was bred by Coolmore and raced by Craig Bernick, is out of the three-time Group 2 winner Fix, a daughter of Iffraaj (Zafonic) who was also placed in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).
Carrying a foal by Too Darn Hot means the resulting offspring will be bred on the same cross as dual Group 2 winner Darnation.
Know Thyself is one of two daughters of Coolmore’s late champion sire on offer in the catalogue, with Newton’s Light (Lot 7) being the other. Offered by Moulton Stud, the daughter of Galileo’s four winners are headed by Listed winner Treasure Isle (No Nay Never), who was also placed Group 3 level in France.
Galileo’s exploits as a broodmare sire are well documented, with the stallion’s daughters having produced 359 individual stakes winners including household names such as Via Sistina, St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) and The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) to name a small few.
Another mare sure to attract plenty of attention is the Group 2-placed Sedaka (Lot 8), a lightly raced winning daughter of New Zealand’s nine-time champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel). Consigned by Watership Down Stud, she is out of a winning half-sister to multiple Listed winner Odeon (Zacinto).
Savabeel mares are an asset to any broodmare band, with Waikato’s marquee stallion carving out a classy reputation as a broodmare sire, with 32 individual stakes winners having been produced by his daughters, headed by five Group 1 winners.
Crimson Coronet is a filly from the third northern hemisphere crop of leading sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor), out of the Listed-winning mare Crimson Rosette (Teofilo), herself a half-sister to Group 1-winning stayer Courage Mon Ami (Frankel).
Grade 1 winner Cloth of Cloud, South Africa’s champion two-year-old in 2015-16, also features among the catalogue in foal to Too Darn Hot. She is catalogued as Lot 3 and offered by Moulton Stud.
South African mares have proved their worth in Australia over the years with multiple Grade 1 winner Via Africa (Var) producing unbeaten Group 2 winner Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) and Golden Rose hero turned Newgate Farm-based sire In The Congo (Snitzel).
Meanwhile, National Colour (National Assembly), a three-time elite-level winner in her native South Africa, went on to produce Australian-bred pair Rafeef (Redoute’s Choice) and Mustaaqeem (Redoute’s Choice), who both saluted at the highest-level in South Africa.
Another offered with a southern hemisphere cover to Too Darn Hot is Moraless, an unraced daughter of Churchill (Galileo). Being out of Mora Bai (Indian Ridge), the mare is a half-sister to Irish-bred Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) winner Hunting Horn (Camelot) and fellow Group 2 scorer David Livingstone (Galileo).
Mora Bai herself is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner and breed-shaping sire High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) and Black Bear Island (Sadler’s Wells), whose best win came in Group 2 company.
Also among the mares catalogued in foal to Too Darn Hot is Believeinmiracles, a dual-winning daughter of Juddmonte’s peerless stallion Frankel (Galileo), who is being consigned by New England Stud as Lot 1.
Believeinmiracles is out of the unraced Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Mosuo, herself a daughter of Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Light Shift (Kingmambo), who also produced dual Group 1 winner and now Cheveley Park Stud resident Ulysses (Galileo).
The catalogue is rounded out by Belle Isle (Pastoral Pursuits), who will be offered with a filly by No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) at foot.
Catalogued as Lot 2 and offered by Moulton Stud, Belle Isle is the dam of four winners, including Group 3 scorer Abel Handy (Arcano) and stakes-placed winner Woody Creek (Zoffany).
Sheridan said that, while the Too Darn Hot covers present an exciting opportunity, the mares themselves are by commercial stallions with long-term prospects to bolster any breeders broodmare bands.
“The broodmare sires represented in this catalogue, with Frankel, Galileo, Savabeel, those kinds of mares are rare commodities and appeal to a lot of breeders. They are top-class prospects and would be exciting additions to any broodmare band,” she said.
“It was fantastic to be able to bring all the Australasians to see the mares during the Tattersalls December Mares sale, all of whom were impressed with the mares and it presents a rare opportunity to bring some of the sirelines like Galileo or Frankel into the southern hemisphere and the Australian market because they are a rare commodity.
“I am really hopeful that this catalogue appeals to those wishing to take those opportunities. With the online sales growing in both hemispheres, they are now a common day feature in Australia and more and more with every sale we have here, they are also growing in stature and size.
“The quality of the horses being offered means there are endless opportunities to grow the international channels of trade online that really benefits both hemispheres and the global industry as a whole and it’s exciting to be part of expanding on that.”
The sale is being hosted on the Tattersalls Online home page and closes at 9pm AEDT on Thursday.
