New winners
Jukebox (pictured above) – Jukebox Flyer (2 f ex Lyka Flyer by Testa Rossa) provided first-season sire Jukebox (Snitzel) with a second individual winner when successful in the Mba Gtp Maiden Plate (900m) at Newcastle on Saturday. The Claire Lever-trained filly went off as the 7-4 favourite under Alysha Collett and managed to hold off the challenge of the Gary Portelli-trained Belriah (Pariah) by half a length with a further head back to Ever Upward (Headwater) in third. A $50,000 purchase at the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale Highway Session, Jukebox Flyer is the third foal to come out of the winning Testa Rossa (Perugino) mare Lyka Flyer and is a half-brother to the winner Charlie Flyer (Myboycharlie). Jukebox stood at Aquis Farm in Queensland for a fee of $8,800 (inc. GST) in 2021.
Savile Row – Valachi Downs stallion Savile Row (Makfi) was presented with a first winner on the track from his very first runner, as the Stephen Autridge and Kris Shailer-trained Perfectly Suited (2 f ex Muscat Hills by Sir Percy) ran out a convincing six-and-a-quarter-length winner in the Wanganui Chronicle 2YO (1200m) on Thursday. Ridden by Bridget Grylls and wearing the silks of Valachi Downs principal Kevin Hickman, the filly defeated Vino Bianca (Proisir) when sent off at $12.70. Perfectly Suited is the third foal out of three-time winner Muscat Hills (Sir Percy).
The Mission – The Roy Chillemi-trained Soul Surfer (2 g ex Misc by Starcraft) broke his maiden at the fifth attempt in the Racing Queensland Maiden Plate (1000m) at Atherton on Saturday, providing Aquis Farm stallion The Mission (Choisir) with his sixth individual winner. Ridden by Stephen Wilson, the two-year-old gelding went off the 5-4 favourite and ran out an easy three-quarter length winner over Whittykitty (Whittington) with Northern Rogue (All Too Hard) a further two lengths back in third. Soul Surfer is the only foal out of the winning Starcraft (Soviet Star) mare Misc. The Mission stood for a fee of $8,800 (inc. GST) in 2021.
New Group/Grade 1 winners
Epaulette – Epaulette (Commands) was provided with his third individual Grade 1 winner when Daumier (2 c ex Illustrate by Street Cry) just managed to hold on in a tight conclusion to Saturday’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield. The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained colt stuck his neck out well in a driving finish under Mark Zahra to beat Revolutionary Miss (Russian Revolution) by a short-half-head with a further neck back to Jacquinot (Rubick). A Godolphin homebred, Daumier is the second winner from two foals out of the unraced Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Illustrate. Out of the Group 2 winner Parables (Lonhro), Illustrate also has a yearling colt by Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible). Daumier is the first Australian Group 1 winner for former Darley stallion Epaulette, with the Group 1-winning son of Commands (Danehill) now standing in Turkey.
I Am Invincible – Marabi (5 m ex Nakaaya by Tiger Hill) extended her incredible unbeaten run to seven when she claimed her biggest success to date in Saturday’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) at Caulfield. Ridden by Ben Allen, the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained mare held off the challenge of her stablemate Away Game (Snitzel) to win by a half-length with a further one and a half lengths back to Oxley Road (Exceed And Excel) in third. The five-year-old also provided her Yarraman Park sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) with an 11th individual top-flight stakes success. The fourth foal out of the late Group 2-winning Tiger Hill (Danehill) mare Nakaaya, Marabi is a half-sister to the 2018 Kennedy Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Aristia (Lonhro) and to the winners Jobodwana (Congrats), Zolani (More Than Ready) and Ruddock (Written Tycoon). I Am Invincible stood for a fee of $220,000 (inc. GST) in 2021.
Quality Road – Local runner Emblem Road (4 c ex Venturini by Bernardini) posted a shock win when coming from last to first to strike in the world’s richest race, the Saudi Cup (Gr 1, 1800m) on Saturday. Trained by Mitab Almulawalah, the four-year-old stunned the big names from Europe, Japan and the US as he got up to defeat Country Grammer (Tonalist) by half a length. Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow) finished two lengths behind the winner in third. In winning for the seventh time in nine starts, Emblem Road became the 13th individual elite-level scorer for Quality Road. Sold for US$230,000 as a yearling at Keeneland, Emblem Road is the second foal out of Venturini (Bernardini), a twice raced half-sister to a Group 3 winner in France. Three-time Grade 1 winner Quality Road (Elusive Quality) stands at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky for a fee of US$150,000 (approx. AU$207,915).
Shooting To Win – Mascarpone (5 g ex Fromage by Flying Spur) broke a frustrating run of five consecutive placings to grab his first top-flight victory as he won the WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Otaki on Saturday. The Team Rogerson-trained five-year-old was ridden to a comfortable two-length success by Wiremu Pinn, as the gelding stepped back up to the 1600-metre trip. Mascarpone beat Amarelinha (Savabeel) with a further neck back to Brando (Savabeel) in third. The success also provided Darley stallion Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor) with his first individual top-flight stakes winner. Bred by Westbury Stud owner Gerry Harvey, Mascarpone is out of the Flying Spur (Danehill) mare Fromage and was a $160,000 purchase by Team Rogerson during the Book 1 Sale at Karaka in 2018. Westbury will also offer a half-sister to Mascarpone by Reliable Man (Dalakhani) as Lot 261 during this year’s Book 1 Sale next month. A sire of five individual stakes winners, Shooting To Win stood for a fee of $11,000 (inc. GST) in 2021.
Vercingetorix – Vercingetorix (Silvano), South Africa’s Champion Three-Year-old Colt in 2013 who went on to taste Group 1 success in the UAE sired his fourth elite-level winner when Pomp And Power (4 g ex Peru by Candy Stripes) returned to his best to take out the Cape Derby (Gr 1, 2000m) at Kenilworth on Saturday. The Justin Snaith-trained colt had been beaten on both his starts since his victory in last year’s Concorde Cup (Gr 2, 1400m) but he made no mistake this time as he came home a length and a half clear of Universal (Gimmethegreenlight). Double Superlative (Twice Over), sent off the short priced favourite, was another three and a quarter lengths away in third. Vercingetorix stands at Maine Chance Farm for a fee of R80,000 (approx. AU$7,315).
Worthy Cause – Hinged (3 f ex Tints by Tycoon Ruler) put in a brave performance on Saturday to win the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick and in the process handed her sire Worthy Cause (Choisir) a first individual top-flight stakes winner. With the race being billed as a match between her stablemates Espiona (Extreme Choice) and Fangirl (Sebring), the Chris Waller-trained three-year-old dug deep at the finish under Brenton Avdulla to repel the late challenge of Startantes (Star Turn) by a head, with a further length and a quarter back to the fast-finishing favourite Espiona. Hinged now has six wins from her 12 career starts with prize-money over $720,000, and is the first foal out of the 12-time winning Tints. Hinged is out of the Tycoon Ruler (Last Tycoon) mare and she has a two-year-old filly by Worthy Cause called Hue and was covered again by the Clear Mountain Fairview-based sire, who stands for a fee of $5,500 (inc. GST).
New stakes winners
Arrogate – Secret Oath (3 f ex Absinthe Minded by Quiet American) provided her late Juddmonte Stud sire Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) with a third individual stakes winner as she ran out an easy winner of the Honeybee Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, the three-year-old filly went off the long odds-on favourite and was ridden by Luis Contreras to an easy seven and a half length success over Ice Orchid (Super Saver) with a further one and three-quarter lengths back to Yuugiri (Shackleford) in third. The fourth foal out of the stakes-winning Quiet American (Fappiano) mare Absinthe Minded, Secret Oath is a half-sister to two winners in the US.
Blackfriars – Constant Dreaming (3 f ex Aloha Miss by Hurricane Sky) provided her sire Blackfriars (Danehill) with his 46th individual stakes success as she scored in Saturday’s Ascot 1,000 Guineas (Listed, 1800m). Trained by Adam Durrant and ridden by Lucy Warwick, the three-year-old filly ran out a comfortable one and three-quarter length winner over Fine Romance (So You Think) with Kia Ora Jewel (Turn Me Loose) a further one and a quarter length back in third. Out of the winning Hurricane Sky (Star Watch) mare Aloha Miss, Constant Dreaming is a sister to the Listed race-winning Tena Koutou.
Canford Cliffs – Canford (7 g ex Sorenstam by Encosta De Lago) provided his sire Canford Cliffs (Tagula) with a 20th individual stakes winner when he won the Lord Reims Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) at Morphettville on Saturday. Giving trainer Ryan Balfour and apprentice jockey Will Price their biggest win to date, the seven-year-old gelding ran out a one and a quarter length winner over So Bene (Hinchinbrook) with a further three-quarters of a length back to Eperdument (Americain) in third. Out of the Group 3-placed mare Sorenstam (Encosta De Lago), Canford is a brother to the winners Canford Springs and Wimbourne and is a half-brother to a further three winners.
Divine Prophet – Promitto (2 c ex Lohgairo by Lonhro) took the step up to stakes company in his stride as he came home a comfortable winner of the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday. The David Atkins-trained two-year-old colt stayed on well to beat long-time leader Rise Of The Masses (Russian Revolution) by two lengths under Christian Reith with a further three-quarters of a length back to Jemeldi (Winning Rupert) in third. The success provided the Aquis Farm stallion Divine Prophet (Choisir) with a second individual stakes winner. Promitto is the second winner from as many foals to come out of the winning Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Lohgairo, who herself is the daughter of the dual Listed winner Air She Goes (Air De France). Lohgairo has a yearling filly by Kermadec (Teofilo), while Divine Prophet stands for a fee of $16,500 (inc. GST).
Dubawi – James Doyle produced a power-packed drive aboard Royal Fleet (4 g Dubawi – Zibelina by Dansili) to force his mount back in front in the shadows of the post as Charlie Appleby saddled the first two home in the Dubai Millennium Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) on the Meydan turf on Friday. The four-year-old, who had twice run second in Group 2 company in the UAE this year, was headed by stablemate Star Safari (Sea The Stars) inside the final 200 metres, but showed plenty of resolve to regain the advantage by a short-head at the line. Castlebar (Invincible Spirit) finished a further two and a quarter lengths adrift in third. In securing a hard-fought success, Royal Fleet became the 222nd individual stakes winner for Darley flagbearer Dubawi (Dubai Millennium).
Duke Of Marmalade – The late Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill) edged closer to his half century of individual stakes winners when his son We’re Jamming (2 c ex Maidstone by Windrush) built on his previous promise to land the Cape Of Good Hope Nursery (Gr 3, 1200m) at Kenilworth on Saturday and in the process became the 48th individual stakes winner for his sire. Having finished runner up on each of his first three starts, We’re Jamming got off the mark as he beat Wecangoallnight (Duke Of Marmalade) by two lengths. Grinkov (Twice Over) was a head further away in third.
Dynasty – South Africa’s four-time champion stallion Dynasty (Fort Wood) sired his 80th individual stakes winner when Salvator Mundi (4 c ex Secret Obsession by Captain Al) struck in Saturday’s Kenilworth Cup (Listed, 3200m). The four-year-old was registering his fourth win in 14 starts as he beat Bayberry (Flower Alley) by a length. Flower Of Saigon (Flower Alley) was a neck further back in third.
Fastnet Rock – The feature Typhoon Tracy Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night went the way of the James Cummings-trained Hellfest (3 f ex Mid Summer Music by Oamaru Force) as she provided her sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill) with his 184th individual stakes winner. The three-year-old filly was a $600,000 purchase by Godolphin out of the Cressfield draft at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and beat Champagne Dreams (Reward For Effort) by a neck, with the stakes-winning Scorched Earth (Nicconi) a further length and a quarter back in third. Hellfest took her record to an impressive three wins from four starts with prize-money topping $166,000. She is one of four winners to race from the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Mid Summer Music (Oamaru Force) and is a half-sister to the Group 3-placed Euphoric Summer (Not A Single Doubt). Mid Summer Music was bought for Cressfield at the 2014 Inglis Broodmare Sale by Bruce Perry Bloodstock for $375,000. Coolmore shuttler Fastnet Rock currently stands for $165,000 (inc. GST).
Glass Harmonium – Aurora’s Symphony (5 g ex Aurora’s Hot by Fantastic Light) gave his sire Glass Harmonium (Verglas) a second individual stakes winner when he won the Launceston Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) on Wednesday. Ridden by Harry Coffey, the Symon Wilde-trained five-year-old was coming into the race off the back of a last-start victory in the Colac Cup (2000m) on February 11. Settled well in fourth position, the gelding was angled off the fence to make his challenge entering the final 600 metres and ran away from his rivals at the finish to beat Ho Ho Khan (Makfi) by one and a half lengths with The Risk Factor (The Factor) a further half-length away in third. A $40,000 purchase by Wilde Racing from the Blue Gum Farm draft at the 2018 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale, Aurora’s Symphony is a half-brother to stakes-placed Smokin’ Val (Valentia). Aurora’s Symphony is out of the unraced Fantastic Light (Rahy) mare Aurora’s Hot, who is a half-sister to the 2012 Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Niwot (Galileo).
Helmet – Langkawi (6 g ex Shortblackmini by Black Minnaloushe) provided his sire Helmet (Exceed And Excel) with a 15th individual stakes success when he won the Kaimai Stakes (Listed, 2000m) at Matamata on Saturday. The Peter McKay-trained six-year-old showed a willing attitude to repel the challenge of Even Chance (O’Reilly) by a neck to cause a 30-1 upset under Tegan Newman, with Slave To Love (Savabeel) a further neck back in third. A $55,000 purchase at the 2017 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, Langkawi is out of the Group 3-placed mare Shortblackmini (Black Minnaloushe) and is a half-brother to the winners Amarula (Thorn Park) and Little Wonder (Volksraad).
Iffraaj – Former Haunui Farm shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic) was provided with his 82nd individual stakes winner courtesy of Miss Ella’s (3 f ex Zenella by Zabeel) victory in Wednesday’s Auckland Oaks Prelude (Listed, 1600m) at Pukekohe. Last seen running sixth in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (Listed, 1600m), the Stephen Marsh-trained three-year-old filly surged clear to defeat Outfit (Tivaci) by two and a quarter lengths, while Miss Madison (Astern) was a further three-quarters of a length back in third. Purchased by Go Racing for $240,000 at Book 1 of the New Zealand Karaka Yearling Sale in 2020, Miss Ella is one of three winners out of dual-winning and Group 1-placed Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Zenella and she is herself a sister to the Group 3 winner Zephyron, while she counts Group 2 scorer Forever Loved (High Chaparral) among her half-siblings. Iffraaj shuttled to New Zealand for 12 seasons, but did not return to the New Zealand-based nursery in 2020 and has since been replaced by his multiple Group 1-winning son Ribchester.
Kitten’s Joy – Hill ‘N’ Dale-based sire Kitten’s Joy (El Prado) chalked up his 109th individual stakes winner when the Doug Watson-trained Khuzaam (6 g ex Afraah by Hard Spun) landed the Jebel Ali Sprint (Listed, 5f) on Sunday. Raced by Shadwell, the gelding defeated fellow Shadwell-owned entire Alkaraama (War Front) by two lengths. King Leo (The Last Lion) was another two-and-a-quarter lengths away in third. The six-year-old gelding is out of dual winner Afraah (Hard Spun) and she is a half-sister to dual Group winner Ghanaati (Giant’s Causeway) – the dam of Group 3 scorer Wafy (Dubawi). Afraah also counts Group 3 winner Mawatheeq (Danzig) and Listed winner Rumoush (Rahy) among her half-siblings. Kitten’s Joy stands at the Kentucky-based nursery for a fee of US$50,000 (approx. AU$69,120).
Laoban – The late WinStar-based sire Laoban (Uncle Mo) was provided with his tenth individual stakes winner when Un Ojo (3 g ex Risk A Chance by A P Indy) posted a huge upset in the Rebel Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. The Ricky Courville-trained three-year-old went off as the unfancied 75-1 outsider of the 11-strong field but was ridden by Ramon Vazquez to a half-length success over Ethereal Road (Quality Road) with a further nose back to Barber Road (Race Day) in third. The fourth foal out of the stakes-placed A P Indy (Seattle Slew) mare Risk A Chance, Un Ojo is a half-brother to a winner in the US. Laoban died in May last year.
More Than Ready – Jean Gros (3 c ex Goodbye Stranger by Broad Brush) provided the former Vinery Stud shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo) with a 214th individual stakes winner when he took out the Marguerite Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Hanshin on Sunday. Trained by Hideyuki Mori and ridden by legendary Japanese rider Yutaka Take, the three-year-old colt beat Shonan Mach (Shonan Kampf) by a ready one and a half lengths with a further neck back to Kaikano Kiseki (Kinshasa No Kiseki) in third. A US$265,000 purchase as a two-year-old, Jean Gros is the ninth foal out of the Broad Brush (Ack Ack) mare Goodbye Stranger, making him a brother to the US Grade 2 winner Tom’s Ready and the stakes-placed Consulado. More Than Ready shuttled to Australia for 19 seasons, but did not return in 2020 and he now exclusively stands at WinStar Farm in Kentucky for a fee of US$50,000. (approx. AU$69,120)
Pomodoro – A victory for Epsom Girl (2 f ex Epsom Downs by Tiger Ridge) in Saturday’s Kenilworth Fillies’ Nursery (Gr 3, 1200m) provided Pomodoro (Jet Stallion) with his seventh individual stakes winner. Now the winner of two of her three starts, Epsom Girl, beat Spywing (Rafeef) by half a length. Pucallpa (Vercingetorix) was another neck back in third. Pomodoro stands at Klawervlei Stud for a fee of R10,000 (approx. AU$915).
Rebel Dane – The Gary Portelli-trained Fireburn (2 f ex Mull Over by So You Think) booked her ticket to the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) as she scored a decisive win in the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday. Ridden by Jason Collett, the two-year-old filly enjoyed the Heavy 10 conditions as she posted a three-quarter length victory over She’s Extreme (Extreme Choice) with a further two and three-quarter lengths back to the favourite Lady Laguna (Overshare) in third. The win marked a hat-trick of consecutive victories for the filly and also gave the dual Group 1-winning Glen Eden Stud-based stallion Rebel Dane (California Dane) a second individual stakes success. Fireburn is the first foal out of the winning So You Think (High Chaparral) mare Mull Over, who herself is a half-sister to the dual Listed stakes winner Galizani (Galileo). Mull Over also has a yearling colt by Hallowed Crown (Street Sense) and she was covered by Pierata (Pierro) last spring. Rebel Dane stands for a fee of $8,800 (inc. GST).
Sea The Stars – Lost Eden (5 g ex Ghostflower by Dansili) made it a stakes double on the day for the trainer Doug Watson when he landed Sunday’s Jebel Ali Stakes (Listed, 2000m) and in the process also handed the Gilltown Stud-based sire Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) with his 87th individual stakes winner. The five-year-old gelding gained the lead inside the final 100 yards and eventually beat Irish Freedom (Pioneerof The Nile) by a length and three-quarters. Down On Da Bayou (Super Saver) was another length and a quarter away in third. Lost Eden was purchased by Jamie Railton for €120,000 at the Goffs Ireland November Foal Sale in 2017, before being bought by Peter and Ross Doyle for €200,000 at the Goffs Ireland Orby Yearling Sale in 2020. The gelding is out of winning Dansili (Danehill) mare Ghostflower who herself is a daughter of Silkwood (Singspiel), who landed the Ribblesdale Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f) in 2007.
Snitzel – The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Castlereagh Kid (3 g ex Absolute Joy by Zabeel) grabbed a first stakes success on Saturday when he won the Autumn Classic (Gr 2, 1800m) at Caulfield and the win also provided Arrowfield Stud stallion Snitzel with his 119th individual stakes winner. Ridden by Damien Oliver, the three-year-old gelding responded well to pressure for a one and a quarter length success over Lucky Decision (Zacinto) with a further quarter of a length back to El Patroness (Shamus Award) in third. A homebred for John Singleton’s Strawberry Hill Stud, Castlereagh Kid is a half-brother to the Group 1-placed Happy Hannah (More Than Ready) and is one of four winners out of the winning mare Absolute Joy (Zabeel), a half-sister to the Group 1 winners Tuesday Joy (Carnegie) and Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence), the dam of the champion mare More Joyous (More Than Ready). Snitzel stood for a fee of $165,000 (inc. GST) last season.
Starspangledbanner – The Tony Cruz-trained California Spangle (4 g ex Pearlitas Passion by High Chaparral) provided Rosemont Stud shuttler Starspangledbanner (Choisir) with a 23rd individual stakes winner as he justified odds-on favouritism in Sunday’s Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) at Sha Tin. Ridden by the multiple Hong Kong champion jockey and this year’s current premiership leader Zac Purton, the four-year-old gelding made all to beat Turin Redsun (Dubawi) by a length with a further length back to Money Catcher (Ferlax) in third. A €150,000 purchase at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale as a yearling, California Spangle is one of six winners out of the High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) mare Pearlitas Passion, and she herself a half-sister to the Group 2 winner Shakespearean (Shamardal). Starspangledbanner shuttles to Rosemont Stud and he stood at the Victorian-based stud for a fee of $16,500 (inc GST) in 2021.
Swiss Spirit – Batsford Stud resident Swiss Spirit (Invincible Spirit) sired his maiden stakes winner when One Night Stand (5 g ex Tipsy Girl by Haafhd) made all to bag the Hever Sprint Stakes (Listed, 5f) on the Lingfield Polytrack on Saturday. The Scott Dixon-trained five-year-old was winning for the sixth time in 27 starts as he beat Mondammej (Lope De Vega) and Strong Power (Kodiac) by a neck and the same. One Night Stand is the fifth foal out of Tipsy Girl (Haafhd) who herself is out of a winning half-sister to Ebor (1m 6f) winner Tuning (Rainbow Quest). Group 3 winner Swiss Spirit stands for a fee of £2,500 (approx. AU$4,645).
Tough Speed – The Bill Ryan-trained Take The Sit (5 m ex Tula by Lago Delight) stayed on strongly to claim a maiden stakes success in Wednesday’s Armidale Stud Vamos Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Launceston. Ridden by Brendon McCoull, the five-year-old mare went on to beat Estoril Park (Pride Of Dubai) by a length and a half with Yes Baby Yes (Dissident) a further nose back in third. The success provided Armidale Stud stallion Tough Speed (Miswaki) with his sixth individual stakes winner. Take The Sit was purchased by her trainer for $15,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale, and is the sole winner from the winning Lago Delight (Encosta De Lago) mare Tula, who herself is a half-sister to the Tasmanian Guineas winner Brainpower (Grand Royale). Tula’s colt by Alpine Eagle (High Chaparral) was purchased for $70,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale by Will Clarken, Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA) and David Jolly.
Turn Me Loose – The Stephen Autridge and Kris Shailer-trained Alabama Gold (2 c ex Attalla by Volksraad) provided his sire Turn Me Loose with a second individual stakes winner when scoring in the Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m) on Saturday. Ridden by Sam Weatherley, the two-year-old colt was breaking his maiden at the fifth attempt and did so in emphatic fashion, beating Andalus (Almanzor) by three and a quarter lengths with a further neck back to Zaher (Proisir) in third. Alabama Gold is the sixth foal out of the Listed-placed Volksraad (Green Desert) mare Attalla and is a half-brother to the winners Tiananmen (Shocking) and Hyspec (Proisir). Turn Me Loose stands at Windsor Park for a fee of $15,000 (Plus GST).
Xtravagant – Lavish Girl (3 f ex Ends In Tears by Snitzel) became Newhaven Park stallion Xtravagant’s (Pentire) third individual stakes winner when she won the Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The first leg of a stakes-race double on the card for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, the three-year-old filly proved too strong for the favourite Argentia (Frankel) as she scored by one and a quarter lengths under Ben Melham, with the same distance further back to Yearning (Snitzel) in third. Purchased by Ciaron Maher Racing for $110,000 from the Newhaven Park draft at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Lavish Girl is out of the winning Snitzel mare Ends in Tears, a half-sister to the Group 2-placed Snogging (I Am Invincible). Lavish Girl also has a two-year-old brother named Immodest, who Maher also purchased for $20,000 at last year’s Inglis Classic. Xtravagant stands at a fee of $11,000 (inc. GST).
