Von Trapp
3 f Frankel – Chortle by Dubawi
Trainer: Mark Newnham
Race: Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), Randwick
In a lineup of high class and stoutly-bred fillies in today’s Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), the Mark Newnham-trained Von Trapp stands out as an intriguing runner.
By Juddmonte’s superstar Frankel (Galileo) and out of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare Chortle, she is bred on the same cross as this year’s Epsom Derby- (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winning hero Adayar (Frankel), as well as UAE Group 1 winner Dream Castle (Frankel).
Before breaking her maiden at Hawkesbury last month, beating Achira (Maurice) and Thursday’s impressive Kembla Grange winner Thousand Years (Dundeel) by half a length and a neck, Von Trapp finished seventh on debut on the Kensington track, in a maiden won by Vancouver’s (Medaglia D’Oro) daughter Chill, who reopposes today, with Blue Diamond Prelude (f) (Gr 2, 1100m) third Wolves (Wolf Cry) in second, and yesterday’s well-bred Newcastle winner Yearning (Snitzel) fourth.
Von Trapp is a homebred for Formosa Bloodstock, with her dam Chortle having been purchased by Neil Jenkinson for €220,000 from the Arqana December Breeding Stock sale in 2016.
Chortle is a sister to globe-trotting three-time Group 1 winner Hunter’s Light, from the Aga Khan family of Group 1 winners Darshaan (Shirley Heights) and Darara (Top Ville), the dam of three-time Group 1 winner Dar Re Mi (Singspiel) who, in turn, is the dam of Darley shuttler Too Darn Hot (Dubawi).
The filly is the third foal from Chortle, who has a yearling filly by Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and was covered by Pierro (Lonhro) last year.
