Waterhouse and Bott dominate juvenile trials

There were six two-year-old trials conducted at Randwick on Friday and juveniles from the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable dominated proceedings.

Tulloch Lodge’s first two-year-old winner of the morning was provided by Wanaruah, an unraced son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), who was having his second trial after running fourth in his first at the same track on May 16.

Ridden by Adam Hyeronimus, the colt hit the line strongly in his 1050-metre heat, eventually finishing 1.2 lengths ahead of Waterville (Menari), while Hell To Pay (Hellbent) was a further 0.4 lengths away in third.

Bred by Fernrigg Farm, Wanaruah is out of South African Grade 2 winner Mella Maria (Star Witness), who the operation purchased for $340,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in 2019. Fernrigg Farm remained in the ownership after the colt failed to make his $300,000 reserve at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale last year.

Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) seventh, Lady Tassort (Tassort), landed her 742-metre event on Friday. The Waterhouse and Bott-trained filly was winning her second trial since her Group 3 performance and she looked every inch the professional when coming home 2.5 lengths ahead of Cindersea (Deep Field).

Lady Tassort’s stablemate Fortingall, an unraced colt by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), produced an equally impressive performance in his 742-metre heat.

Bred and raced by Belinda Bateman, the colt finished fourth in his first trial in January and looked an improved product on Friday when beating Bartolf (So You Think) by two lengths. Dynamic Ace (Saxon Warrior) came home a further 1.7 lengths further back in third.

Fortingall is the first foal out of the juvenile-winning Written Tycoon (Iglesia) mare Tilia Rose and hails from the same family as two-year-old stakes scorer Weatherly (Beneteau).

Heat 13 over 742 metres, the final juvenile event of the morning, was landed by the Tulloch Lodge-trained Mayfair (Fastnet Rock), who improved on his second-placed finish in a Hawkesbury trial in February.

Carrying the China Horse Club and Newgate colours, the son of the recently pensioned Coolmore Stud stallion Fastnet Rock (Danehill) made a good impression at his second trial, jumping quickly from an outside gate to work forward and then improved all the way up the straight, doing his best work at the line to score a halflength win over Metaphorically (Written Tycoon). Carnegie Hill (I Am Invincible) came home a further 2.4 lengths away in third.

A $625,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for China Horse Club, Newgate, Go Bloodstock and Trilogy, Mayfair is out of the US Listed winner Cicatrix (Violence).

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Everybody Rise (Snitzel), a brother to Russian Revolution, the Snowdens former stable star and now Newgate Farm resident, scored his second trial win when he beat Scorching Legend (Too Darn Hot) by 1.4 lengths in his 1050-metre heat. The colt finished third at Rosehill in November on his only career start to date.

Having finished second in a 737-metre trial at Randwick on May 16, Michael Freedman’s Twinkling Star (Zoustar) appreciated a step up in distance when she took out her 1050-metre heat, beating Railway Man (I Am Invincible), who is trained and co-raced by Ciaron Maher, by 0.1 lengths.

Carrying the colours of her ownerbreeder Go Bloodstock, which were carried to victory by Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) in March, the filly is out of BRC Sires’s Produce (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Look To The Stars (I Am Invincible), herself a daughter of Argentinian Grade 2 scorer Star Prize (Southern Halo).

Meanwhile, Railway Man, whose sole outing to the races at Randwick-Kensington in January resulted in a fifth-placed finish, looked more professional than in his four previous trials.

The son of I Am Invincible is the first foal out of Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Booker (Written Tycoon), who was bought by Coolmore’s Tom Magnier for $1.6 million at the 2020 edition of the Inglis Chairman’s Sale.

Railway Man was bought by his trainer for $2.5 million at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is raced by a host of powerhouse owners including Coolmore, Westerberg and Yarraman Park Stud.
